I can’t say it any simpler or with any less words. We just need volunteers. As you know our membership numbers are going down and, with less paying congregants, we are going to need to rely more and more on volunteers. I know many of you have taken on one or more tasks, and for that I say THANK YOU!! And for those of you who have stepped up in the past, I say THANK YOU!! But I’ll also ask that you continue to do whatever you can in your spare time. So, now I’m speaking to those of you who say they’re going to do something or mean to do something or have it on your to-do list, etc. I am speaking to you. If you’re a family with young kids, can you spare an hour for Torah School? If you have a day off here and there, can you lend a hand? Or if you have more time to spare, can you join a committee? There are many committees that could use your help. For example Membership, Ritual, Continuing Education and Mentsch Makers are all very small committees. New faces and new ideas are just what they need. Or maybe you just have an idea that you want to share for an event, program or fundraiser? This can be a one time happening that you would like to see take place at the temple. We can make this happen if you bring the idea to us! If you are a member of our congregation, it would seem that you want the synagogue to be successful as a spiritual and educational entity and as a financial institution as well. The more we succeed in these areas, the better off we will be. We will be entering a new era in 2016 as we say goodbye to our beloved rabbi of over 30 years and welcome a new spiritual leader into our congregation. It will be time to reconsider the model of temple life as we know it. We are researching different ways to structure our dues, and with that restructure, we will need to restructure our mode of volunteerism. Please consider making some time in your schedule to volunteer at the temple. Details on more ways to help will be available soon! B’Shalom Beth Glass 7 MENTSCH MAKERS The excitement never STOPS!!!!!!!!! As we go to press, we have just finished celebrating and learning about the Purim story with our All School Purim Songfest. Now we are getting very busy preparing our classrooms for Passover. The anticipation of Spring and the delightful aroma of Matzah Brei await us in just a few days. Registration is currently underway for the 2015- 16 school year. This will be our 28th year right here at the Monroe Temple!!! We will once again offer classes for children from 6 months through 5 years of age with choices from 1-5 days per week. Classes are filling nicely, so if you are planning to visit our school, please give us a call and we will arrange a convenient time. It is so much easier as well as better to have our children and staff properly placed prior to the summer months. And… if you recommend Mentsch Makers to a friend and they join us for the school year, we will credit you one month of tuition!! Great News!! Once again, we are offering a summer program for children who will be turning 2 years of age by December 1, 2015 called Tiny Tots in the Summertime. This program is modeled after our very successful Mentsch Makers in the Summertime but geared to the younger child. More information can be found on our website, in the temple lobby, or please see Carol, the Mentsch Makers Director. And…. don’t forget to enroll your child for 6 weeks of summer fun in either of these programs. Just a brief overview of our classes: Ima & Me: A stimulating and joyful play group experience one day a week for mommy/daddy/ caregiver and their young children. Included in this program are music, crafts, clay, tumbling and snack. What a great way to meet parents with children of the same age. This year we will offer this class in 5 week sessions so you have the flexibility to join for some or all of the sessions as your schedule permits. 2’s : All by Myself….This program is specially designed as an introduction to pre-school for a 2 ½ hour program. It is offered as a 2 or 3 day week option. We aim to develop a sense of independence and selfconfidence through age appropriate activities in a warm and caring atmosphere. We provide a variety of hands -on experiences and encourage each child to develop at his or her own pace. 3’s: This year, your child has the option of attending 3 or 5 mornings a week. Through the use of a variety of materials and manipulatives, we enable your children to enhance their understanding of language and introduce them to number concepts, science, cooking and music. We also provide an introduction to Shabbat and Jewish celebrations as we sing with our Rabbi several times a month. 4’s: In this program, we build upon our 3’s classes and prepare the children for success by giving them the opportunity to make choices and engage in problem solving activities in order to develop self-confidence and competence. A sense of responsibility is instilled by cooperation in doing their classroom “jobs” as well as in snack preparation. Once again we meet with our Rabbi in the Sanctuary where we feature Jewish songs and stories along with puppets. In addition, our curriculum will provide your child with the tools to be successful in kindergarten. 4’s PLUS: Join us for a 5 day pre-school program which combines the best of a 3 day pre-school program with extra special themes on these extra 2 days. Come and explore Space, Ocean Life, Animals and their Habitats, The 5 Senses and our Healthy Bodies, Life Cycles, Transportation, Dinosaurs, Weather and so much more!! Continued on page 8 8 MENTSCH MAKERS Continued from page 7 Tot Café - A wonderful “lunch bunch” of children and their teachers. Children bring their lunch, learn to eat and make choices independently, as well as socialize just a bit longer than our class times. Enrichment – A variety of classes offered to our 3 and 4 year old children to enhance their pre-school experience. Some of our offerings have included music, cooking, arts and crafts, stay and play, fun with phonics, reading readiness, math mania and rock and roll. Summetime: A choice of 2 very special programs: Tiny Tots in the Summertime and Mentsch Makers in the Summertime. For six wonderful weeks, we offer a summer program geared to the same age levels. Throughout the summer we play outdoors in our sunny and shady play area, participate in water play, arts and crafts, music, lunch and special themed days. A pizza party as well as make your own ice cream sundaes are always a big hit!! What a great way to continue your Mentsch Makers connections!! Family Programs – We reach out to the whole family and extended family with our three fabulous Family Programs: Nosh & Daven, Chanukah and Purim. Come learn, eat, and kvell with your children. Thank you to Federation for their support in these programs. Early Drop Off – To accommodate the needs of our families, we will continue to offer an Early Drop Off program. Parents can drop their children off as early as 9am. So, please come and visit your temple pre-school. And….please recommend us to your friends and family. We want to continue growing Jewishly together and educating our youngsters for at least another 28 years!!!! Today, when we sit down with family and friends at our beautiful Seders we actually celebrate three, time dimensions of Passover – the past, the present and the future. We all know the history of Passover. As we sit at the Seder table, we need to discuss how ancient liberation for o ur people can inspire liberation today for all people. The present Passover can be used as an opportunity to reflect on the things that p lague our world, to seek justice for the still-oppressed and even to bring together the multi-faith humanity of this earth under the common banner of universal freedom. We have the opportunity to discuss how our ancient liberation can inspire liberation today for all people. Passover 5775 will be extra sweet for the Balentine family with our daughter’s bat mitzvah just around the corner. But what does Passover have to do with a bat mitzvah? Are there commonalities? What happens after we put away the Passover dishes and launder the linens? What happens before, during and after a bat mitzvah? I am asking myself all these important questions, and how do we go forward in our lives after these important Jewish celebrations? Rabbi presented us parents of b’nai mitzvah celebrants with a wonderful, approachable book entitled Putting God on the Guest List: How to Reclaim the Spiritual Meaning of Your Child’s Bar or Bat Mitzvah, by Rabbi Jeffrey K. Salkin. After reading this book, I was able to deduce connections between a bat mitzvah and Pesach. A young adult’s Jewish education should not end with the b’nai mitzvah and sending out thank you notes. The Jewish people did not cease their communal life and Jewish traditions after the Ex odus. And only by understanding the past, and identifying it, can we deal intelligently with the future. As the Haggadah tells us, “the Seder night is the time to relate to our children, from the eldest to the youngest, encouraging them to ask, inquire, challenge, le arn; for only by doing so can they become part of Jewish history and make it part of their own personal experience and perspective of the world.”1 We need to encourage our young adults to continue to inquire, challenge, learn after their b’nai mitzvah by signing them up f or BETY, confirmation class, spending time with other Jewish teens, attend Jewish summer camps and Jewish programs and visiting Israel . It’s important to carve out this time in a busy adolescent’s life to continue their Jewish education, their connection to Torah an d maintain a strong connection to their Jewish community. It’s what happens after their 13th year that gives true meaning to their b’nai mitzvah celebration. Help our youngsters not to become enslaved to forces of repression, such as over-scheduled extra curricular activities and the singular focus on getting good grades so they don’t blow their lives by not getting into the right college. “Bar and bat mitzvah can become the time in our young people’s lives when we help them set priorities. True, grades are important, but grades are not as important as knowledge, and knowledge is not as important as wisdom.” 2 Please bring yourself, friends, and young adults to our next event and live the motto of Women of Reform Judaism: “Stronger Together”! Upcoming Sisterhood/Women of Reform Judaism Programs: Women’s Torah Study Series – see below Mon 1 June evening: Annual Meeting 20 June 8:30 p.m.: VACATION BONANZA Looking back, we sincerely thank our Spring Celebrations Bazaar (held on March 15th) committee members: Carol Nirenberg; Sondra Sussman; Mary Haberman; Lois Klipper; Lorelei Osborn and Maris Tuite.
