Gifts of Warmth Help Heal
A
ll the signs were there, she said,
but 53-year old Wendy Corazzi,
of Fredericktown, did not stop
smoking. It had been her habit
for 35 years.
Blood clots in her lungs in 2012 were
followed in 2013 by a bout of pneumonia
and then a year later, hyponatremia,
abnormally low blood sodium that can be
caused by cancer. Her team of physicians
ordered a CT scan and discovered an
irregular result.
Three weeks later, she began
chemotherapy and radiation to treat what
turned out to be lung cancer and tumors
on three lymph nodes.
“I felt confused, I felt lost, and I’m
looking around and thinking, ‘How am
I going to do this?’” she said.
Wendy rose to the occasion and
decided that her goal was to kill this cancer.
She said the tragic news snapped her
out of a 10-year depression and after
dropping her anti-depressants and her
pain management medications, she
“became alive again.”
“I decided that I could either sit in the
corner and cry about it and waste my life
or I could be proactive,” she said.
She found strength and support in her
family — husband Lee, and adult sons
Lee II and Steve. She found peace in “her
faith in the Lordship of Jesus Christ.” And
she says the staff at Monongahela Valley
Hospital’s Charles L. and Rose Sweeney
Melenyzer Pavilion and Regional Cancer
Center gave her comfort and courage and
“treated me like a queen.”
She also found many small blessings in
items donated by anonymous, generous
community members that lifted her spirits
and made her feel special.
The day Wendy shared her story, she
was sporting a lovely hand-knitted dark
blue hat and matching scarf that was
donated by a local group. She also showed
off some of her other favorite handcrafted,
donated items that have given her
practical help during her treatments.
“I noticed right away — oh, my gosh —
I saw my hair in my silverware drawer and
in my food and the holidays were coming,”

she recalls. “And then I found these minichef’s hats. I can wear them while cooking
and then take them off and shake them out
outside and can sit down to eat without
worrying.”
She said that part of being proactive
included changing her diet to all local,
natural and seasonal foods, and reading
about the side effects of her treatment to
better deal with them.
“For me, I get up every morning and do
my makeup and my hair for my family so
they aren’t looking at me and thinking,
‘That’s right, we have cancer in our lives,’”
she said. “I want them to say, ‘She’s doing
well,” and I want to look in the mirror and
say, ‘I look alright today, and I still have
some hair.’”
She advises other women to really take
care of themselves in whatever way it is
that will make them feel good. For Wendy,
it was learning how to apply makeup to
minimize the effects of her treatments and
finding a stylist who knew how to care for
cancer patients’ hair.
“But that’s just the beauty, on-theoutside part of it for me. I changed my
diet and I keep up with my treatments,
I don’t miss, I’ve not missed and I won’t
miss, I’m sticking with that to make sure
we kill this cancer.”
In early February, Wendy learned she
was doing very well and only needed two
more chemotherapy treatments, less
than were originally scheduled.
“Dr. (Barry) Tonkonow said there were
no detectable malignancies in my PET
scan, which means I’m cancer free,” she
shared. “I was diagnosed early and we
attacked it from every angle. I cannot
say enough about the doctors, nurses
and radiation therapists here. It’s a real
miracle.”
She plans to repay the small blessings
she received from strangers as a patient
at the MVH Regional Cancer Center.
Although she does not knit or sew, Wendy
says she has some craft ideas that could
help other patients.
“I see myself coming back to help other
cancer patients in some way,” she said.

Cardiac Catheterization Lab — Artis zee® angiography system
Funding Update
T
hrough the generosity of our
community, Monongahela Valley
Hospital has been fortunate
enough to recently complete two new
projects in both our Imaging Center
at the HealthPLEX and in the Cardiac
Catheterization Lab on our main
campus. The 3-D mammogram,
which is also known as digital breast
tomosynthesis, is a new technology
that captures a series of consecutive
images from different angles across
the arc of the breast to produce
three-dimensional slice images.
The slices enable radiologists to
examine breast tissue one layer at
a time instead of viewing all of the
layers together as a flat image. An
abnormality that is hidden behind
tissue in one image may be visible
in another image at a slightly
different angle. Radiologists can also
target the size, shape and precise
location of a suspicious image. The
3-D mammogram provides many
benefits including fewer callbacks
for additional images, which in turn
reduces anxiety; fewer unnecessary
biopsies, fewer additional tests, and
a greater likelihood of detecting
multiple breast tumors.
In addition to the new technology
at HealthPLEX Imaging, the hospital
has also completed a major renovation
to its Cardiac Catheterization Lab.
The installation of the new Artis zee®
(ceiling/floor)-mounted angiography
system provides physicians with
highly detailed images of patient’s
blood vessels during diagnostic and
treatment procedures. The ergonomic
design of this system eliminates
time-consuming and uncomfortable
repositioning of the patient in the
exam room, making the procedure
faster and less stressful. Also, the
system is specially designed to
provide patients with the lowest
possible radiation dose. Minimizing
radiation is especially beneficial
during angiographic procedures
because they are often lengthy in
duration.

Ducoeur Breast Cancer Walk
O
n Oct. 11, 2014, 450 participants joined us for the
11th annual MVH/Lois Orange Ducoeur Breast
Cancer Walk. The event, which includes a fun walk,
vendors, refreshments, survivor/memorial lamppost
ribbons, promotional items, entertainment and guest
speakers, raised more than $21,000 to support the
prevention, early detection and treatment of breast cancer
in our community at Monongahela Valley Hospital. Save the
date for this year’s event: Saturday, Oct. 10, 2015.
Participants enjoy the one- or two-mile fun walk, which begins at
the Charleroi Market House.

National Doctors’ Day
N
ational Doctors’ Day is held each year on March 30
and recognizes physicians for their work and their
contributions to the community. At Monongahela Valley
Hospital we support our physicians and are proud to have them
as part of Team MVH! To show our appreciation, the Office of
Fund Development has created a Doctors’ Day Campaign.
This campaign is a way for an individual or group to make a
gift in honor of a doctor. This can be done through our website
at monvalleyhospital.com by clicking on the Donate Now
page and including the doctor’s name in the Tribute Information.
Gifts can also be made by contacting the Office of Fund
Development at 724-258-1657. When a gift is made, the
honored doctor will receive a personal message notifying him
or her of the thoughtful tribute. Take a moment today to thank
