If your child is in years 3, 4 or 5 and you would like your child to
participate in the Sacrament of Confirmation this year please send a
note to the office by Wednesday 22nd April.

Catholic Schools Week 2015
From Sunday the 3rd of May, all Catholic
Schools in the Diocese of Lismore will be
celebrating Catholic Schools Week.
Catholic schools enrol about 20 per cent of
Australian school students. There are 615
Catholic Primary and Secondary schools
across NSW and the ACT, providing quality
education in a faith-centred environment. Catholic schools
teach the same curriculum as government schools.
Expectations of achievement and conduct are high. With
a strong focus on the individual, a broad curriculum caters
for a wide range of
interests and abilities.
Catholic schools offer highly qualified and professional
teachers who cater to the diverse learning needs of our
students. St Ambrose will be hosting a number of great
events in Week 3 of next term and we warmly invite all of
our friends to participate. If you have time, check out this

Celebration of ANZAC Day
As you would no doubt be aware, this year marks the 100
Anniversary of the landings at Gallipoli. The spirit of Anzac, with
its human qualities of courage, mateship, and sacrifice, continues
to have meaning and relevance for our sense of national identity.
As citizens of a very proud nation and members of a wonderful
school community, we warmly encourage all families to march with
the Pottsville and District Sub-Branch of the RSL at Pottsville on
Saturday 25 of April. We would ask that all students wear day
uniform.
In addition to this, we will commemorate
ANZAC Day and the 100 Anniversary
here at school on Friday 24 of April at
2:15pm. All friends of St Ambrose are
warmly welcomed.

STAFF DEVELOPMENT DAY
On Thursday 19th March the staff from St Ambrose participated in an in-service that focused on
Mathematics.
The day was run by Anita Chin and involved the teaching of mathematics using concrete materials. It also
involved looking at teaching strategies to differentiate the curriculum (i.e. modifying teaching to cater for
students of different abilities within the class).
The day was extremely practical and focused on the new Australian Curriculum. By utilising these strategies
children become active within lessons, they become more engaged and importantly become deeper thinkers!
BURINGBAR / MOOBALL BUS RUNS
Parson’s Bus Company have informed the school that depending on numbers they can provide a
bus service that runs a school bus from Murwillumbah, Burringbar & Mooball into Pottsville (St
Ambrose).To determine the feasibility of this run if there are any families / students who would use

Speech and Drama
Speech and Drama has been welcomed with enthusiasm at St Ambrose in Term 1!
Mime, Frozen snapshots/tableau and hot seating were common themes introduced
across all stages this term.
Kindergarten opened the door to Mrs Tongue’s House and we had fun learning the 3
bears rap. Year 1’s highlight was Simon says mimes and building on the act of ‘When
I am….” Year 2 work shopped a group drama from the story ‘The toy makers dream’
Years 3, 4 and 5 were focused on exploring non verbal communication and gesture
through mime and frozen tableau. Also, characterisation leading to hot-seating. Group
work enhanced the importance of working as an ensemble.
We look forward to an exciting Term 2. Each stage has been entered into the Choral
Speaking section at the Murwillumbah Festival of Performing Arts.

OUR SCHOOL CREST
At our recent School Opening, Fr Paul McDonald delivered a detailed explanation of the various elements
that make up our school crest. In developing a deep and rich culture within the school, it is very important that
each student and family within St Ambrose Primary School understand and acknowledge the thinking and
understanding that has occurred in order to formulate our School Crest.
The triangular shape represents the Trinity, it also picks up on the triangular architectural feature of the front
of the Church of Sts. Mary and Ambrose. The Church is the first building people will come to as they
approach the school which is located behind the Church.
The predominant symbol of the cross is self-evident and is located central in the logo because it fits so well
with the motto.
The open book represents the scriptures and the fact that St. Ambrose was a scholar and an eloquent
preacher of the Word. It is also a symbol of learning or education.
The candle represents the light of Christ and the fact that St. Ambrose is the Patron Saint of candle makers.
The motto “Omnia Christus Est Nobis” (De Virginitate 16,99) “To Us Christ Is All” is a quote from St.
Ambrose. In his General Audience on 24 October 2007, Pope Benedict XVI said St. Ambrose never tired of
saying “Omnia Christus Est Nobis”. Having the quote in Latin is recognition of tradition in the Church and
provides an opportunity to teach the meaning of this beautiful and important quote from our Patron Saint.

The colours have been carefully chosen. Purple is a recognised colour used by several organisations in
Pottsville and is generally regarded as “Pottsville’s colour”. Green (or Teal) represents new life as a result of
Christ’s death for us on the Cross. It is also a predominant colour in the countryside around Pottsville with the
bush and green pastures. Gold is a colour associated with St. Ambrose because of the bees, the bee hive,
honey (his words were golden and sweet like honey) and because he is the Patron Saint of candle makers
(beeswax candles being golden in colour). All colours used are also “liturgical colours” and as such are rich in
meaning.
The emblem is simple, yet rich in meaning and provides a wonderful opportunity to teach and reflect on the
Catholic message it conveys together with its strong link to St. Ambrose as Patron.
While containing the essential elements the logo is contemporary in design and as such it is in harmony with
the schools contemporary building and the Catholic Schools Office focus on “contemporary learning”.
Our sincere thanks are extended to Catherine Holliday (Holliday designs - graphic design solutions) who
played a significant role in developing this crest. (The colours of the crest determined the uniform of which
Catherine and a number of parents within the school helped design). The crest is clearly evident on the
school uniforms, school stationery and on school buildings. Importantly it will be the symbolic representation
of this school and it will be an emblem that we are and will truly be proud of!
EASTER BONNET PARADE
On Monday the 30th March our Kinder, Yr 1 and Yr
2 students participated in an Easter Bonnet Parade.
Many thanks to all those children who participated.
There were many, many fabulous bonnets and all
the children had a wonderful time.
Thank you to all the parents, grandparents, friends,
neighbours etc who assisted in creating the
bonnets, they looked fantastic!!
Following the parade, the boys and girls took part in
an Easter Egg hunt which was conducted in and
around our playground area.
Special thanks to our friends from Gumnuts
Preschool who visited for the morning. They also
had an Easter Egg hunt which topped off their
excursion!!!
SPORT TERM 2
In addition to our normal sport the school will be conducting a gymnastics program
throughout the school, run by Dance Fever. There is no additional cost as this is part of
the school resources levy. This program will take place every Tuesday, therefore sports
uniform will need to be worn on the following days (two days for some students):
Students K-2: Tuesdays
Students 3-5: Mondays & Tuesdays
NAB AFL Auskick is the
Australian Football
League’s Key introductory
program for primary schoolaged boys and girls and
their families. Through our WEEKLY COACHING
PROGRAM, you’ll learn the skills of the game through
appropriately modified activities and rules, play football in a
fun and safe environment, and make plenty of new friends
too!
In 2015 Auskick will run on Friday afternoons during term 2
at the new St Ambrose Primary School, starting week 4,
Friday 15th May, 3.15m-4.15pm on school oval, and
continue each Friday for 6 weeks. Cost is $70 for 6 week
program. Includes backpack football and 4 Gold Coast
Suns tickets.

St Ambrose Primary&School&is&an&‘Allergy&Aware’&school.&
Our school aims to provide a learning environment that is safe and supportive of all students. This
includes providing for the needs of students and staff who may have anaphylactic (severe allergic)
conditions –&including nut allergies. For these individuals exposure to allergens at school may
constitute a serious risk to their health and wellbeing and it can be fatal. The Department of
Education have recently made changes to the guidelines in Allergy Management. To adhere to this,
St Ambrose is now an ‘Allergy&Aware&School’. So, what does this mean for us all?&
The school is committed to minimise the risk to children with documented allergies to nut
products; the&school&encourages&parents,&children&and&staff&to&AVOID&bringing&foods&that&contain&nuts&to&
school. This allergy aware practice applies to those ingredients specifically listed as nuts. The
school acknowledges that it is impractical to ask parents not to send food which states ‘may
contain traces of nuts’&on the label. &
We#suggest#that#the#peanut#butter#sandwiches#are#a#great#afternoon#tea#snack! And did you know that you
can buy a Nut Free chocolate spread at Woolworths? ….Scooby Doo Chocolate Mud Spread…tastes
just as good as Nutella but no nuts! As food allergies are common, it is much easier to buy food
products which are clearly labelled ‘Nut free’.&
We acknowledge that some families have notified school administration of whereby they require
foods with nuts for nutritional purposes due to restricted diets.&
The school takes an active approach to minimising risks; a note is given to the class where there is
a child that has severe allergies, teachers encourage children to wash hands after eating and
reinforce the no sharing of food policy. Teachers will engage children in learning with new
resources to educate students about being “Allergy Aware”. The aim of this program is for students
to:&

understand the importance of supporting students with food allergy&
•
help children with food allergy Avoid their trigger&
•
learn what Action to take if someone has a severe allergic reaction/anaphylaxis.&
The school has provided regular training to teachers in Anaphylaxis Management - this provided
clear guidelines to follow in the event of an emergency management of a child suffering
anaphylaxis. Staff are informed of children with allergies, are observant to the first signs of a
reaction –&rash,#welts,#abdominal#pain,#swelling#of#face,#lips,#
eyes and are trained in the use of the adrenaline
injector medication.&

PARENT FORUM MEETING
The next Parent Forum Meeting has been
moved to Tuesday 28th April.
A Parish Confirmation Meeting has been
scheduled for this night, hence the change.
Parent Forum Meetings will be held on the
Monday of Week 2 and Week 7 of each term.
Two meetings will be held, one at 9.15am and the other at 7.00p.m.
The agenda for each meeting will be set the same. Hopefully this
will provide an opportunity for many parents to attend.

SCHOOL DISCO
Many thanks to all those students and parents who attended our
first school disco. It proved to be a great opportunity for the
children to have some fun with their new found friends, it also
provided an opportunity for parents to mix and meet new families.
A BIG THANK YOU to the staff who assisted on the night, in
particular to Victoria Stubbs who coordinated the Canteen and to
Mr Constable who came to the rescue and provided the music on
the night. He is now available for 21st birthdays, engagement
parties etc!!!
I would also like to apologise for some confusion around
supervision on the night. Due to the nature of our disco’s, students
are not confined to a hall and a such can move around the
quadrangle area
of the school. In addition to this staff are involved
