Another Successful
RMGC / Lions Charity Golf Day
President Bill Tomkinson presents a $25,000
cheque to Sandringham Hospital Director of
Nursing Judy Reeves at the Moorabbin Lions
annual Royal Melbourne Golf Club Charity
Golf Day, along with Golf Day Chairman Lion
Geoff Thomas (right.)
The $25,000 will go towards a trolley mounted
de-fribulater and accessories. Sandringham
Hospital was the main beneficiary of money
raised at the annual event. Moorabbin Lions
thank the members and management of the
Royal Melbourne Golf Club for their
generosity and cooperation, without which the
event could not happen.
Blessed with ideal weather conditions, the clubs annual Royal Melbourne
Golf Club Charity Golf Day was an outstanding success. President Bill
Tomkinson congratulated Lion Geoff Thomas and his committee for
organising a fabulous day for the 216 participating golfers, and especially
for raising over $53,000 on the day – just short of last years record of
$54,000.
Lion Geoff Thomas said he felt very humble that Moorabbin Lions had the
opportunity each year to be involved with an event played at one of the
best courses in the world, and working with a great team of people lead by
very capable Royal Melbourne Golf Club CEO Paul Rak. “For the past six
or seven years that I have been involved, I am always grateful for how
welcome we are made and that nothing is a problem to them – from the
greeting at the door, through to the professional staff and out to the course
rangers we get nothing but the highest level of co-operation.”
“Golf is a great game played and supported by great people. “We have a
great band of golfers many of whom come back year after year to play in
near perfect weather conditions, which I very astutely arrange for our day!
Well that’s what I tell everybody anyway”.
“By now you will all know that the day was a great success, successfully
running four strong golf competitions, raising near record amounts plus
working with other Lions club people and volunteers.”
“Let’s face it, we were put under pressure to perform – and perform we
did. Like every year, there is always room for improvement. Your
committee has met and detailed these points for action,” he said.
He said that, all in all it was another fabulous day, one that all Lions can
and should be proud of.
Geoff went to make some “heartfelt thank you's. “I am not sure where to
start – let me try with a couple of Lions who have been doing their job,
working under the radar for many years. Our bookies Jack Hellyer and
Dennis MacDonald turn up every year and successfully extract ‘donations,’
adding colour and fun to our golfers day. Can someone tell me how many
years and the estimated amount they have raised?”
Clarinda Lions Cynthia Sederion, Veda Oakley,
David Oakley and Ron Cowell manned the BBQ.
(Below) Moorabbin Lions Russell Jackson and Di
Fensham take a short break.
“Talking of colour and fun, we had Sabeena Beveridge who was around all
day helping everybody and proved to be an outstanding auctioneer.”
“Whatever I say will not do justice to Russell Jackson who I have worked
with every year producing sponsor brochures, entry forms, auction display
items and all sorts of cards and leaflets. These usually take 3 or 4 prints
(or more) before we are satisfied. His patience and persistence is a credit to
him. The end product is always something special. The golf day just would
not be the same without his input,” Geoff said.
Geoff went on to thank Gary McInnes. “Gary gave us strength in an area
where we had our biggest problems in past years. His golf knowledge
combined with technical support was just what we needed.”
He made special mention of David Oakley and the hard working Clarinda
Lions family who accepted their challenge to take over the catering
function. “They added an Egg & Bacon breakfast to their traditional BBQ
and drinks which were extremely popular with our golfers and volunteers.
Thanks for being a bigger part in our day.

CHRISTMAS
CELEBRATIONS
Members and their partners, all suitably attired
with a 'Touch of Christmas,' really got into the
Christmas spirit and festivities when gathering on
December 17th at 'The Sandbelt' hotel for the
clubs annual breakup.
Proceedings got under way at 7pm with drinks
and starters. Entertainment then got under way
with Lion John Lissenburg accompanying Lion
Louise Maplestone on the guitar in her rendition
of a number of 'standards.'
Members then partook of
delicious finger food, cake
and tea coffee.
Lions Louise and Cerise de
Gelder then led the gathering
in some spirited carol singing
in what was a great evening
of fellowship
President Bill Tomkinson then made a
presentation to Jenny, the Sandbelt's Function
Manager, in appreciation for a wonderful spread,
and her great service at club dinner meetings
throughout the year.
NEED FOR FEED PROGRAM
KICKS IN AGAIN FOR
FIRE VICTIMS
'Need for Feed' Co-ordinator, Packenham Lion Graham Cockerell has had little
time for rest in recent times. Graham and his band of volunteers were “Up and
at'em,” early getting ready for their big Australia Day hay convoy delivering
fodder to fire affected Moyston near the Grampians in the west of the State.
'The Need for Feed' started at the end of 2006 after two fires, started by lightning,
broke out in the Bright area just before Christmas. Massive fires, burnt for a
couple of weeks, merged into one and took out 10 houses and a great vast area of
farmland.
'Need for Feed' is now a major source of emergency funding for V3 and other
Victorian Lions Districts. In just over 7 years 'Need For Feed' have raised nearly
$3250,000, and distributed more than $800,000 dollars worth of fodder, and
worked in every Victorian District. The volunteers are proud and grateful to have
had the opportunity to make a difference in so many lives.
Graham had the opportunity to publicise Packenham Lions 'Need For Feed'
project on the Conversation Hour with Jon Faine on ABC radio 774 last Monday
morning. While still catching his breath from the Australia Day weekend.
Graham got a message to say the fire victims in the Euroa area only had enough
fodder for the next week! He is busy organising a convoy to Euroa on Sunday the
Feb. 8th. to transport 160 rolls of hay from Seymour to the Land Care Fodder
Depot at Gooram, only made possible because of the generosity of the volunteers
and Truckies, who year after year refuse to be reimbursed for out of pocket
expenses, fuel and wages.

Three Sausage Sizzles
In A Month!
During the month of December, traditionally
a very busy time in our personal lives,
Moorabbin Lions organised and helped out
with Sausage Sizzles, at Bunnings
Moorabbin , on December 6th & 27th. The
December 6th event was at very short notice
– just four days – at Bunnings Moorabbin
request.
$1641 was raised on December 6th, and
$1133 on December 27th, a grand total of
$2774 – a great team effort!
On December 6th, those taking part were:
Lions, John and Marilyn Lissenburg, Lex
Richardson, Di Fensham, Gillian Lelah,
Billy Tomkinson and Jessie Brent. We were
also very appreciative of assistance from
'Friends of Moorabbin Lions' Pat Foss, Tony
Pook, Ann Hickie and Robbie Brent. Thank
you to Marilyn and John for assisting with
the Clean Up.
On December 27th those taking part were:
Lions John and Marilyn Lissenburg, Russell
Jackson, Cerise de Gelder, Cont... Page 3

…. Karen Mitri, Geoff Thomas, Di Fensham, Jessie Brent and Gillian Lelah.
Assistance from 'Friend of Moorabbin Lions' Pat Foss was greatly valued, as
was help from Carolyn Allen (Blind & Vision Impaired Ten Pin Bowlers
Australia.) Thank you to Marilyn and John who assisted with the Clean Up.
Thank you to Di who organised 30 loaves, courtesy of Bakers Delight,
Charman Road, Cheltenham, and sincere thank you to everyone who assisted
on the day.
At the request of the Blind & Vision Impaired Ten Pin Bowlers Australia,
Moorabbin Lions assisted with the organising and running a Sausage Sizzle
outside Bunnings Mentone on Sunday January 4th .
The Sausage Sizzle raised a grand total of $1690, all of which will
contribute towards the cost of sending a team to the World
Championships in South Korea in May 2015. Assistance by our Lions
members, John and Marilyn Lissenburg, Matylda Jaworksi, Jessie Brent
and Billy Tomkinson was much appreciated by members of the 'Blind &
Vision Impaired Association.'
A warm thank you to everyone who organised and helped out with these
three events. Secretary – Gillian Lelah
Chief of Global Development
Appointed
Lions Clubs International (LCI) announced on January 14th that Kevin
Cherep has been appointed as the association’s new chief of global
development. As chief of global development, he will lead the
integration of the Global Development Group – a new organizational
group within the association – collaborating with staff on the
development and implementation of the association's ongoing strategies,
programs and initiatives, and create opportunities and increase
innovation that drive the future direction of the association.
“It’s an extraordinary privilege to join the world’s premier humanitarian
service organization,” said Kevin, who joined the association on January
12th, 2015. “The dedication of Lions around the world has positioned
LCI to continue to be the global leader in service for another 100 years,
and beyond. It’s an honour to be a part of the team.”
With over 14 years of executive management, development and
marketing experience, Kevin joins Lions Clubs International with a long
history of non-profit success. In his new position, he will lead LCI’s
Global Development Group, which is comprised of the Membership
Development, Service Activities, Public Relations & Communications,
Global Strategy and Global Partnership & Government Relations
divisions – “I’m pleased to welcome Kevin to the association. We’re
very fortunate to have someone with his great talent and experience to
help bring this organization into its Centennial and beyond,” said Scott
Drumheller, executive administrator of Lions Clubs International.
Kevin was a Navy cryptologist before serving as vice president of CCS
Fund Raising, the nation’s largest non-profit consulting and strategic
philanthropy firm. Later, as chief development/marketing officer for
Soles4Souls, Kevin was responsible for creating the organization’s first
global development team, generating over $25 million in organizational
revenue, managing key partner relationships and overseeing all aspects of
marketing, public relations and communications.
Though new to the administrative side of LCI, Kevin is no stranger to
the association. During his time at CCS Fund Raising, he served as the
Executive Director of Lions Clubs International Foundation’s “Campaign
SightFirst II,” where he provided consultative and management services
to the $200 million campaign to eradicate preventable blindness. Kevin
was also an active member of the Oak Brook Lions Club before moving
to Tennessee in 2011.
Through Lion David Blyth, last year we met for a
game of Ten Pin Bowls with members of the Blind
& Vision Impaired Bowling Association. It was a
good fun evening but we were totally blown away
by the skill of the bowlers of the opposing team.
Little did we know that we were competing with a
duel Gold Medallist from the Asia-Pacific Games!
Marilyn (pictured third from left) will be travelling
to South Korea, together with her PA Eileen,(first
from left,) later this year to once again compete
for Gold, but needed funds to offset the expenses.
A day at Bunnings (Mentone) was arranged and
(being novices at Bunnings BBQs) the expertise
of Moorabbin Lions was called upon to help with
advice, some equipment and a little help on the
day. Lions Marilyn and John Lissenburg helped
set up and clean-up (they’re good at that!) and
Lions Geoff Thomas, Bill Tomkinson, Jessie Brent
and Matilda Jaworski assisted with cooking and
serving during the day.
A very busy and
successful day was enjoyed by all – generating a
net amount of $1,690.
Moorabbin Lions wish
Marilyn and Eileen a safe trip and – Bring Back
the Gold!
