From the Principal...
The first six weeks of 2015 has quickly come to an end as we approach the month
of February with optimism for the New Year. Welcome to the second semester of
school in mustang country! Did you set a New Year’s resolution for yourself?
Perhaps it’s time for all of us to revisit our goals and get focused again. Our
students are looking to us to model successful adult behavior. Successful adults set
goals and adjust them until improvement is obtained. We like to call this “working
on the work”. Help us talk to our middle school student about setting high
academic goals for themselves for this second semester. This is a winning formula
for our students that will set them up for success.

February is the month we recruit for our MST Magnet Program. The deadline for students to
apply is early this year scheduled for February 13 th. If you know someone who is interested in
attending Moore, please have them contact our office. Current TISD students have received notices of
this new deadline in the mail. We will work with any student outside of TISD that may not have
received this information in a timely manner. Our deadline to review MST applications is February
25th. We will do a final recruitment presentation at 7:00 in the library on February 24 th. The success of
our program can greatly be contributed to our parents. Good comments shared by parents have
encouraged other people to look into what Moore has to offer. Thank you for spreading the good
news about Moore.

Report Cards
All Moore parents are invited to attend our February 24 th PTA Hamburger Exhibit Fair and
Silent Auction where student projects from the school year will be displayed for all to enjoy. Each
year this is one of our favorite evenings to be involved in with our school community. Please mark
your calendars and come out for a family night of fun with our students. Our PTA Silent Auction has
over 90 items to bid on. All proceeds go directly back to assisting our school and our students.

Please glance at the Up and Coming Events for this spring and join us on campus, in the
concerts, on the fields and in the gym to rally our Mustangs to the close out of this school year and
the close out of our current facility. The new building is looking majestic and the excitement is
growing.

Choir News
On Saturday, January 31, 2015 at Robert E. Lee High School, the Mustang Choir Soloists
DOMINATED!!! At the U.I.L. Solo and Ensemble Contest, eight singers prepared solos to
sing in front of one judge. ALL eight SINGERS were granted top ratings! Hailey Nichols,
8th Grade, came home with a SUPERIOR rating. 7th Graders Emily and Erin Berry,
Sophie Breen, Hailey Parish, and Sandra Trujillo all came home with EXCELLENT ratings,
which is the TOP honor! 8th Graders Amayah Hawkins and Jackson Gullatt also received
top honors with their EXCELLENT ratings. Mr. Minter is SO PROUD of these soloist for
making such HIGH marks in their solos!! GO 'STANGS!!!!!

The students for UIL Academics are preparing for the competition that will be
held on March 21, 2015 at Hubbard Middle School. This is a change
from the original date. Mustangs are competing in the following events:
writing, reading, speaking, listening, dictionary, spelling, math, art, and
science (7th and 8th only). For more details about the completion or practice
times, contact Ms. Vullo or Ms. Carter.
Moore Mustang Orchestra News
On Thursday, February 5, 62 Mustang Orchestra students competed in the
TISD solo contest and 43 came home with 1stdivision medals. These students
are Nolan Kirkendoll, Hannah Smitherman, Caitlin Reed, Beth Routon, Jacoy
Washington, Rebekah Roberts, Jackson Sorenson, Irasel Pacheco, Jeanette

PTA News

I trust your 2015 has started off well -- January seemed to fly by! We have a number of exciting events in store for
the spring semester and there should be something for just about everyone!
Our Exhibit Fair and Hamburger Supper & Silent Auction is coming up on February 24 in the Cafeteria and Gym
areas. We have a special guest joining us: School Board Member Barbara Smith will share some thoughts about
TISD with us. This evening is the main PTA fundraiser of the year and is always lots of fun. Tara McCrea has been
working diligently to solicit donations from local businesses and there are many wonderful items! There are
plenty of gift cards from local eating establishments, autographed sports memorabilia from our Moore athletes,
several weeks at summer camp, tutoring sessions, gift baskets, a KitchenAid stand mixer, and many more items! If
you would like to make a donation of any sort, just let me know and I will be happy to take care of it. I hope to see
many of you that evening!
Thanks to all of our PTA volunteers for helping out in so many ways. We have volunteers chaperoning dances,
attending PTA council meetings, volunteering on Flex days and 93 and Up days, selling and distributing spirit
wear, creating and mailing newsletters, planning and making teacher treats, and the list goes on! Thanks to those
who gave our teachers the gift of time during December so they could have a few extra hours of holiday shopping,
and thanks to all our parents for helping make Moore the greatest middle school around!

FLEX Dates and Requirements
Progress Report Dates/FLEX Date: Mar. 31st/Apr. 1st
On FLEX Day, Lunch Times Are as follows:
7th—10:50—11:25
6th 11:30—12:00
8th—12:15—12:45
All students must have a 73 and up in all subjects on Progress Report day and signed by parent/guardian when
they arrive at school on FLEX day. School ID lanyards must be worn to receive the FLEX pass. Students
without ID Lanyards and Progress reports that are brought to the school for students or signed after classes
start at 8:20 will result in missing the first 45 minutes of FLEX. Students failing only an elective course will be
re-assigned to an elective classroom. Students failing any other class are assigned to a tutorial during FLEX to
help bring the failing grade up.

PTA SILENT AUCTION
PTA will be hosting a Silent Auction during the Hamburger Supper and Exhibit Fair on Tuesday, February 24th. All
proceeds will benefit our wonderful school to help provide postage for the Moore Newsletter five times a year. The
funds also make academic incentives possible to reward our hard working students. They also help make drug
education, teacher/ staff appreciation, UIL soccer, school dances, and many more deserving programs possible.
Some of the wonderful items we have to auction this year include an ipad mini, overnight camps at both Pine Cove
and Sky Ranch, a pair of ladies boots from Cavender’s, tennis lessons from Tyler Tennis & Swim, and a KitchenAid
Mixer. Students will love the items from Rocket Fizz, Times Square Cinema, DBat, Rangers Baseball, and many
other places that were kind enough to donate items!

Moore Student Council
During the holiday season, the Moore Student Council believes that it is important to take time to give back to our
community. This year, the student council partnered with the Salvation Army to participate in two important
service projects. First, on December 3rd and 4th, members of the Moore Student Council rang the bells outside of
the Southeast Loop Brookshire's from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. In addition to ringing the bells, the students sang
Christmas carols and greeted everyone entering or leaving the store with a "Merry Christmas" and a "Have a good
night". Over the course of two nights, we had over sixty people donate money to our bucket! On December 5th,
the eighth grade student council members took a field trip to the Broadway Square Mall to participate in the
Salvation Army Angel Tree. The boys were assigned a 5 year old boy and the girls were assigned a 5 year old
girl. Both groups were able to spend money they had earned from our student council penny bomb fundraiser last
year. In addition, many of the students contributed their own money to their shopping budget. Both groups were
able to purchase everything that was on their angels wants and needs lists, including purchasing each child a
bicycle. We want to thank all of our student council members and their parents for making both of these projects a
huge success.

Student Spotlight

Dancer from Tyler Shines!!!
Evelyn Robinson, 7th grader, recently competed in the Youth America Grand Prix dance competition for 8-19 year
olds representing Tyler Junior College Academy of Dance. She competed against 400 other dancers in her age
group at the semifinals in Dallas and won 1st place in contemporary and classical. This is a huge accomplishment
for her personally as a dancer and she is also the first dancer from Tyler to win a spot in the finals. In April she will
travel to New York to dance in the final round of the competition. Way to go Evelyn!

Attention 6th grade PARENTS!!
Make sure your student is getting the state required immunizations to start 7th grade. These immunizations
are required: Tdap, Meningitis, and 2nd Chicken Pox
vaccines. If your student has already had these done by
their physician, please get a copy of their current shot
records to the school nurse by June 5th.

ALL MEDICATIONS needs to be given to the school
nurse and kept in the clinic for safety purposes. The
only two exceptions are emergency medications (rescue inhalers for Asthma and EPI-PENS for severe
allergic reactions.
Tyler ISD requires that medication form be signed by a
parent and physician and kept on file in the nurse’s
office. If the student has any medication in their
backpack, purse , etc. , a parent will be notified.

Science

ARDUINO RELEASE
This past November a group of students started meeting every Thursday
afternoon in Mr. Magnuson’s Science room to collaborate on the programming of
something called an, “Arduino.” For the uninitiated, Arduino is an opensource computer hardware and software company. It has also become a moniker for a
project and user community that designs and manufactures kits for building digital
devices and interactive objects that can sense and control the physical world.
The group is organized and led by two 8th grade students, Micah Katz and
Zachary Morrison. Together they have been presenting information on how to use
the programming language of an Arduino circuit board. The Arduino platform uses
the C and the C++ language to communicate, which Micah and Zach have been
teaching to the weekly attendees.
This month the group has started its largest project which is to use the Arduino
to control a four wheel remote vehicle. This process will involves having to write the
instructions for the motion of the vehicle as well as disassemble and reassemble the
vehicle after adding the Arduino circuit boards. The group has set a mid to late April
date for completion. If you would like more information please contact Mr.
