About Curiosity Quest: The Morgantown Public Library (MPL) offers some special one-day &
two-day enrichment classes for children 1st grade & up throughout the summer. (Please
note that not all classes are open to all grade levels.) Grade levels are as of Fall 2015. See
more detailed class descriptions on back page.
Cost per student per class per day is $20. A two-day class is $40. Register at the circulation
desk on the 1st floor of the library on Spruce St. Registration is not complete until payment
and a completed registration form has been received. Children can register for as many
classes as they like, but space is limited and classes fill fast.
Classes run from 10 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. Children must bring a bagged lunch; vending
machines and microwaves are not available & students must remain on library premises.
Students will be supervised at all times. The Morgantown Public Library reserves the right
to cancel classes due to low enrollment. Refunds will only be given if the class is canceled.
Our mission is to provide children with a fun, safe place to explore topics of interest indepth, through reading, crafts, music, games and hands-on activities.

June:
Mon. June 15 - Cinderella Around the World (Grades 1-5) - What Cinderella story
involved a crocodile or a snake? Travel on a magical journey as you read multicultural
versions of Cinderella. Make a Cinderella tiara & other Cinderella crafts from around
the world. (Joan Bissett)
Wed. June 17 - Scratch Programming (Grades 3-6) - In this class, students will
enter the world of computer programming by learning how to create animations,
computer games, and interactive projects. Using Scratch (scratch.mit.edu), a
graphical programming language, students will learn fundamental programming
concepts and have fun at the same time. It is highly recommended that students
furnish their own laptop to use in this class. (Jeff Brusoe)
Mon. June 22 - LEGO Racers (Grades 2-4) - Learn & test what makes your race
car go faster. Learn about gears & different types of motors. Enjoy designing, creating,
and building several race cars with LEGOs. (Judy Werner)
Thurs. June 25 - Frozen Fun (Grades 1-5) - Are you ready to have some
Frozen fun? Did you know that Hans Christian Andersen’s fairytale The Snow
Queen inspired the Disney movie Frozen? Who is your favorite character? Make a
rock troll & Elsa’s braid & Icy Power bracelet. Chill out with Frozen books, songs,
crafts, games, puzzles & frozen treats. “Snow” much fun! (Joan Bissett)

Mon. June 29 - LEGO Builders Club (Grades 1-3) - A day of creative LEGO
building! Build your own world of castles and cities along with spaceships and other
vehicles. Learn to make your towers and structures sturdy as well as functional. Work with
others to create pieces that will work and fit together. (Judy Werner)
July:
Wed. July 1 - LEGO Machine Shop (Grades 2-4) - Be creative & share your
building skills to see what can be made while learning about simple machines. Learn
to follow design plans. Make a variety of structures & vehicles that use gears,
pulleys, axles & wheels. (Judy Werner)
Thurs. July 2 - Origami Fun (Grades 2-6) - Do you already know some Japanese
Origami paper folding and want to learn more? Learn to make more complex forms like:
Paper balloon, hopping frog, talking bird, magic star . . . and more. We will have fun
making and playing with Origami creations. (Yumiko Wilson)

- Star
Festival is July 7th in Japan. We will decorate a bamboo tree with Origami ornaments,
paper cuttings and Japanese writings. You will make an origami star, birds, a butterfly,
flowers and more. You will learn some Japanese & Chinese writings too. (Yumiko Wilson)
Mon. July 6 - Let’s Celebrate Japanese Star Festival (Grades 2-6)
Wed. July 8 & Thurs. July 9 - Introduction to Python (Grades 6-8) Two-day
class - This class is designed to help middle school students with very little or no
computing background learn the basics of programming with Python
(www.python.org). This is an easy-to learn, high-level computer language that is used
for a variety of applications. In this class, students will learn to create games and
other fun applications. It is highly recommended that students furnish their own
laptop to use in this class. (Jeff Brusoe)
Wed. July 13 - Advanced LEGO Builders (Grades 5-8) - Take the next step in
exploring the world of LEGOs. Enjoy the excitement of building a LEGO device that can
move on its own. Learn to follow design plans to create your own device using the
Mindstorm NXT base. Use prepared programs & watch your device move & follow given

Wed. July 15- Scratch Programming (Grades 3-6) – See description from Wed. June

Mon. July 20 - Fancy Nancy & Madeline Oh Là Là Fun (Grades 1-5) Celebrate Fancy Nancy’s 10th anniversary and Madeline’s 75th anniversary! Join their
adventures through books, songs & dance. Learn some French, some fancy words, make
some “oh là là” crafts & accessories & play some Fancy Nancy & Madeline games. Enjoy
Madeline videos and make your own delectable parfait (a fancy word for ice cream
sundae) at the “Lord Cucuface Cooking School.” Come bedecked in your fanciest
ensemble (that’s a fancy word for outfit). (Joan Bissett)
Thurs. July 23 & Fri. July 24 - Very Fairy Fun & Games (Grades 2-6) Twoday class - Explore a magical world where fairies live & play. Enjoy fairy books by Cicely
Mary Barker & a fairy play village. Build your own fairy house. Let your imagination soar
as you create your own colorful fairy, a fairy dream keeper, fairy skirt & make fairy
crafts. Play fairy games & munch on fairy bread. (Joan Bissett)
Fri. July 31 - American Girl Adventures (Grades 2-6) - Step back
in time with the American Girl dolls. Enjoy crafts, games, old fashioned
toys & foods celebrating by-gone eras that represent the different
American Girl dolls & their book series. Make a necklace from Kaya’s
culture, learn to read Hobo signs like Kit, practice sewing on a lacing
hoop, make a tussie-mussie & lots of dolly crafts. Dolls will visit a tea
room, hospital and pet wash center. Dolls (& their pets) are welcome too. (Joan

Mon. Aug. 3 - Holidays with American Girls (Grades 2-6) - Step back in time
with the American Girl dolls to explore holidays & celebrations of bygone eras. Make
Victorian Christmas and Valentine crafts like Samantha & 4th of July crafts like Molly.
Learn about Rebecca’s Hanukkah celebration & Kirstin’s St. Lucia Day. Make Chinese
New Year crafts from Ivy & Julie’s era and Mardi Gras masks from New Orleans
where Marie Grace & Cecile lived. Decorate a dolly stocking & make dolly crafts. Dolls
(& their pets) are welcome. (Joan Bissett)
Wed. Aug. 5 - LEGO Builders Club (Grades 1-3) - A day of creative LEGO building!

Curiosity Quest classes are from 10 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. downstairs in
meeting room A.
Payment: cash, or checks payable to: Morgantown Public Library
(credit cards not accepted). There is no online registration or
registration via email. Refunds only given if class is canceled.
Put your child’s name on a wait list for a class that is filled & leave your
email contact info. If a space becomes available, we’ll contact you. If the
wait list is very long, it may be possible to add an additional class.

MPL reserves the right to discharge a student from enrollment in the CQ program if
the child’s actions or activities endanger the safety of other participants and staff
or is a detriment to the quality of the program operation. Any tuition or unused
amount of tuition will be refunded.
