THE COG - RCM Meeting 1530 Bulletin 6 May 2015
President’s News
President’s Corner – David Lloyd
At Wednesday night’s meeting it was great to see Brian and Jeff attending. Brian gave us a quick rundown of his
overseas escapades, Brian will be allocated a guest spot in June and will go into more details also incorporating
the complexities of travel bookings.
When Brian was overseas they met up with Camila, one of our past incoming exchange students. Camila’s story
will be told to us when Brian gives his talk.
Our guest speaker on the night was Ian Gladstone on Dementia. Ian gave us his experiences on the subject; Ian
has been diagnosed with early stages of Dementia. He gave us an overview of the changes in his life style and
how he is coping with the disorder. Indeed Ian has a marvellous attitude in always having a positive attitude and
always keeping his glass half full. As he lives local I have invited Ian to visit our club at any time, he is also a
“Friend of Rotary” in the USA, where he spent some time, and maybe we can convince Ian to join our Club.
The invites to the Changeover have been sent out, please book your attendance with Katarina as soon as you
can, hence enabling Tim to start confirming numbers. Please be aware the facility is restricted with numbers. It’s
going to be a fantastic night, so be sure you’re there to welcome in the new and kick out the old! 
As you may be aware the Riggalls and the Summers are on an overseas venture meeting up with a few of our
past incoming exchange students and attending a Rotary Meeting on a river boat. We all hope they have an
exciting, eventful and safe journey, and return with some great stories.
There are quite a few events coming up this month, eg The Race Day, Partners/Trivia Night, the Star BBQ.
Please review the club calendar in the COG for references to our events.
Don’t forget if you’re passing near the kiosk on the weekend call in and have a coffee with your colleagues.
Looking forward on seeing you all Wednesday Night.
Take Care, David

FROM BRIAN SINCOCK
Club Members and Partners Visit with Camila Novato in Rio de Janeiro – March 2015
Club Members and partners, Brian and Sophia Sincock / Kym and Libby Davis, visited Rio de Janeiro
in early March 2015 as part of a South American Holiday and had the opportunity to meet up with past
Rotary Exchange Student Camila Novato for 10 days. Camila was 17 years of age when she visited
our club around 2002/2003 and is now 29 years of age and still living in Curitiba.
We met Camila at Rio Airport where her flight from Curitiba and our flight from Iguazu both arrived and
went to a beachside apartment we had booked at Ipanema Beach. We pre-booked a 3 bedroom 3
bathroom apartment prior to leaving Australia with Camila as our guest. We had excellent views of
Ipanema Beach from the front picture windows and views of Christ The Redeemer from the rear of the
apartment.
Camila has completed her university study and is a lawyer working for the Attorney Generals
Department in Curitiba. She is continuing university study to become a State Attorney. She said she
loves her work and enjoys being able to help people as a lawyer.
Camila has moved her parents from the nearby countryside to Curitiba and they live in the apartment
immediately above hers that is close to the University. Her father is still going quite well and Camila
manages to look after her aged mother with the help of her father and family.
Camila said she enjoyed every moment of her time in Australia and wished to be remembered to all
members and in particular her host families. Our immediate observation was how Camila immediately
slotted in as if we were all family.
We had a great time in Rio over those 10 days with Camila as our local tour guide. We visited Rio City
Centre, Sugarloaf, Christ The Redeemer and countless cafes coffee / gelati shops / restaurants as
well as many places the average tourist never gets to see.
Some of the memorable events, apart from the view of Christ The Redeemer from the ‘throne’ in our
en-suite bathroom were:
Portuguese pies (gourmet custard tart), Coffee and Gelati
Steak House meals where a red (Time Out?) or green (Yes Please!) coaster directed the
waiter when to bring you a serving of meat from a large ‘sword like’ skewer he carried that he then
sliced onto your plate
Watching flights arrive at the airport (with a beer) from the top of Sugarloaf where the planes
flew past beneath the observation deck and onto the airport
The surf at Ipanema – we swam every day and the surf was pretty wild on some days. An
entertainment hi-light was Sophia in the surf looking out to sea when a giant wave came through –
lifted up / feet pointing to the sky / washed ashore ‘bumpety bump’ on her rear (where’s your camera
when you need it?)
Last night at ‘Girl from Ipanema Restaurant’ where the songwriters wrote the actual song. This
was something special especially talking about all we’d done knowing we were saying ‘goodbye’ the
next morning
Goodbye the last day was rather difficult with tears all around – even the apartment complex
doorman was in tears as he really enjoyed our company (sharing an occasional bottle of wine and
offering us best directions for our next local tour)
Camila said she would like to visit Australia (Adelaide) in a year or so and I am certain as a club we
can facilitate this between past host parents and other club members.
The club should feel very proud of its achievements via Student Exchange engagement. In this case
we had Camila with us as a host club and helped steer her towards university education (Camila’s
words) when she was unsure of her future direction and thinking of a career in tourism.
