9:00 PM FIRST PEOPLES: ASIA
Asia - What happened when we expanded out of Africa and into Asia
-- where did we go and whom did they meet along the way? The
latest evidence suggests we left far earlier than previously thought
and interbred with a newly-discovered type of ancient human -- the
Denisovans. The existence of these people was only established four
years ago, when geneticists extracted DNA from a tiny fragment of
finger bone. And because our ancestors mated with them, their
genes found a home within our DNA. More than that, they've helped
us survive and thrive. Australia - When Homo sapiens arrived in
Australia, they were - for the first time - truly alone, surrounded by
wildly different flora and fauna. How did they survive and populate a
continent? There is a close cultural and genetic link between the
First Australians and modern-day Aborigines -- the ancient and
modern story intersect here as nowhere else in the world. The
secret to this continuity is diversity. Intuitively, they found the right
balance between being separate and connected. (Repeats 7/2 at

Shared beliefs about slavery bring together Angelina Grimke, the
daughter of a Charleston plantation family, who moves north and
becomes a public speaker against slavery; Frederick Douglass, a
young slave who becomes hopeful when he hears about the
abolitionists; William Lloyd Garrison, who founds the newspaper The
Liberator, a powerful voice for the movement; Harriet Beecher
Stowe, whose first trip to the South changes her life and her writing;
and John Brown, who devotes his life to the cause. The abolitionist
movement, however, is in disarray and increasing violence raises
doubts about the efficacy of its pacifist tactics. (Repeats 7/8 at

owner, Douglass flees to England, returning to the U.S. in 1847. He
launches his own anti-slavery paper. John Brown meets with
Douglass, revealing his radical plan to raise an army, attack
plantations and free the slaves. Harriet Beecher Stowe publishes
Uncle Tom's Cabin in 1852. A best-seller, and then wildly successful
stage play, this influential novel changes the hearts and minds of
millions of Americans. The divide between North and South
deepens, touching off a crisis that is about to careen out of control.

"Nightmare bacteria." That's how the CDC describes a frightening
new threat spreading quickly in hospitals, communities, and across
the globe. FRONTLINE reporter David Hoffman investigates the
alarming rise of untreatable infections: from a young girl thrust onto
life support in an Arizona hospital, to a young American infected in
India who comes home to Seattle, and an uncontrollable outbreak at
the nation's most prestigious hospital, where 18 patients were
mysteriously infected and six died, despite frantic efforts to contain
the killer bacteria. Fueled by decades of antibiotic overuse, the crisis
has deepened as major drug companies, squeezed by Wall Street
expectations, have abandoned the development of new antibiotics.
Without swift action, the miracle age of antibiotics could be coming
to an end. (Repeats 7/8 at 3:00am)

9:00 PM AMERICAN MASTERS: HARPER LEE: HEY BOO
Reading "To Kill a Mockingbird" has been a national pastime for five
decades -- it is still selling nearly a million copies a year, its classic
popularity and power are a common reference. And the courtroom
image of Gregory Peck, as the passionate Atticus Finch, gave us an
enduring picture for the novel's message. Behind it all was a young
Southern girl named Nelle Harper Lee, who once said she wanted to
be Alabama's Jane Austen. This program explores her life and
unravels its mysteries, particularly why she never published again.
Illuminated with family photos, revealing personal letters and an
exclusive interview with her sister, Alice Finch Lee (100 years old),
the film is steeped in the texture of the novel's Deep South and the
social changes it inspired. Tom Brokaw, Rosanne Cash, Anna
Quindlen, Scott Turow, Oprah Winfrey and Andrew Young reflect on
how "Mockingbird" shaped their lives. (Repeats 7/11 at 2:00am,
