Summer 2015 Hale & Field Minneapolis Kids Hale Elementary 1220 E 54th Street Minneapolis, MN 55417 Site: 612.668.3777 Questions? Minneapolis Kids at Hale Site Coordinators Beth Kamienski [email protected] Steve Ashcroft [email protected] Field Trip Cell Phone: 612.290.4044 *Please allow 24 hours for email response. Thank you. Mpls Kids Main Office: 612.668.3890 [email protected] http://mplskids.mpls.k12.mn.us www.facebook.com “Minneapolis Kids School Age Care” We provide high quality school age child care for families. We offer a safe, nurturing, educational and recreational experience where children are encouraged to pursue interests and develop friendships, independence, and confidence. Welcome! Welcome to our summer of movin’ and groovin’! We tried to answer all potential questions in this handbook, so keep it close for a quick reference. Field Trips Permission Slips—Please return all completed forms to a Mpls Kids staff by Monday, June 1. These need to be done before your child may participate in the program. Participation—All kids must accompany the group on days they are registered. Alternative care is not available on site. Hours of Operation Our program opens at 6:30AM and closes promptly at 6:00PM. A late fee of $1/minute will be assessed for picking up a child after 6pm. On the third incident a $25 fee will be charged. After the fifth incident, service will be terminated. Time is kept according to our sign out iPad. Check-In and Check-Out Your child must be electronically signed in and out each day by an authorized guardian. If someone other than the parent or guardian listed will be picking up, please let the site coordinator know and remind that person to bring legal identification. Swim Trips Swim Shirts—Mpls Kids provides shirts designed for water use that ALL children wear on every swim trip. Swim shirts are NOT to go home. They are returned to staff after each use, washed, and given out for the next swim trip. Wearing these makes it easier for staff to track children in busy pools and help keep them safe, as well as protects our skin from the sun! Flotation Devices & Life Jackets—Please do not send your child with pool toys, flotation devices, or life jackets. Many of the facilities we visit have restrictions about bringing these items. Additionally, if your child is not a confident enough swimmer to be in water without a life jacket, we will keep them in the shallower areas. Goggles are okay! 2 Summer School—Children in summer school will not be able to join the group on field trips if summer school is in session that day. Staff will be on site to meet the bus for kids scheduled to be with us after summer school. Departure Time—Children must be on site 30 minutes prior to our departure time for field trips. This is usually by 9:30AM, unless we have an early trip departure (times listed on the calendars). During this time, we talk about our destination, trip expectations, take attendance, divide into small groups, answer questions, apply sunscreen, put on our t-shirts, and count heads. T-Shirt—All Mpls Kids participants will receive a spiffy Minneapolis Kids t-shirt. We will keep the shirts at Hale for the duration of the summer so we can wear them for all of our trips. Minneapolis Kids staff will launder the shirts. On your child’s last day they will take their t-shirt home to keep. Visitors—We welcome parents and guardians to join us. Please let us know in advance so we can adjust our numbers with the destination. Lunch—Send a lunch with your child each day! Spending Money—Typically we do not allow kids to bring money on field trips and most parents appreciate this. Summer expenses add up quickly. However, there are a few trips that make sense to honor the kids’ requests to bring money. We generally limit those times to once a month, set a limit, and note it in the itinerary. If kids do bring money on other field trips, we do not allow them to spend it. Hale Summer 2015 What to Wear? Casual clothes that can get dirty Shoes with backs and/or straps that cover toes Ok—Sandals with back strap, keens, tennis shoes Send a suit– While our pool trips are generally scheduled for Fridays, we may take an occasional walking trip to the wading pool or break out the slip n slide on site. It’s a good idea to send a suit and towel each day. Behavior For everyone’s safety we expect children to: Keep hands, feet and objects to yourself Follow directions and respect the people in charge Use appropriate language Respect other people and property We follow the Minneapolis Public School’s discipline policy. Parents will be notified when there are ongoing difficulties to help problem-solve their child’s behavior. Weekly Updates This packet is full of helpful information you will need for the whole summer. You can also expect to receive an email each Friday from the site coordinators with what will be coming for the next week. That way you can be prepared for exactly what we will be up to. Medication & Illness If your child is prescribed medication that must be administered during Mpls Kids hours, a physician or dentist must provide written instructions to Mpls Kids. Contact the site coordinator for the necessary forms. Medication must be in the original container, properly labeled with the child’s name, date, amount, and frequency of dosage. This procedure is also applicable to “over the counter” medication (ie: Tylenol). If your child falls ill during the summer, remember that we follow the school district’s policy. Children must be fever and vomiting free for 24 hours before returning to Mpls Kids. Sunscreen & Bug Spray Minneapolis Kids provides sunscreen and we apply it liberally! We provide a sunscreen lotion, SPF 50 and sunscreen spray, SPF 50. If your child has sensitivities and you prefer to provide your own, please send a bottle labeled with your child’s name. Kids are responsible for applying sunscreen to themselves, with staff supervision. We provide natural, deet free bug spray. We do not apply bug spray on a daily basis, but will use it on park trips when the bugs are out. *There is a permission slip for sunscreen and bug spray application included in this packet 3 Lunch and Snack A highlight of the day! Kids must bring a lunch with drink EVERY DAY. Refrigeration and microwave are NOT available for student lunches. Send an ice pack if needed. We provide a healthy morning and afternoon snack daily. Bag Lunch—Field Trip We do not require a disposable lunch for field trips. On field trip days we will toss all our lunch boxes into totes and take them with us. Allergies & Dietary Concerns: Does your child have any allergies or special dietary concerns? Please communicate with the site coordinator to ensure we take the necessary steps to keep your child away from allergens. Snack CSA: New this year, in an effort to provide healthy snacks and support our local farmers, Mpls Kids at Hale will have a weekly CSA delivery. The kids will help identify the produce we receive and plan snacks to serve using the delivery. Hale Summer 2015 Screen Time We adhere to the MAAP accreditation standard that limits a child’s total screen time to 20 minutes per day. This includes computer lab, hand-held games, and other electronic gadgets we offer on site. This standard was created with the American Pediatric Association recommendation in mind that children should engage with entertainment media for no more than 1 to 2 hours per day. We think most parents would agree that their kids have many opportunities to fill their screen quota for the day, and there is more fun to be had away from screens while at Mpls Kids. D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything And Read) We love to read! Summer is a great time for kids to continue their reading skills from the school year. We slow things down as a large group and have quiet reading time for about 30 minutes every day. We have books available for kids to choose from, but often they enjoy bringing a book or magazine from home to read or continue reading from the night before. We strongly encourage bringing books from home. Just be sure to label it with your child’s name so it returns home. For those who like to listen to a book, there are typically a couple options. A staff member reads aloud from an ongoing chapter book for those interested. This typically takes a few days to complete. 4 No Toys from Home Gearing Up Toys and items of value (including electronics of all types) should remain at home. They can be damaged or lost. Mpls Kids does not assume responsibility for any items brought from home. Throughout the summer we will offer numerous bike days (marked with a bike icon on the calendar and indicated in weekly emails). In addition to biking around the neighborhood, we will be teaching the skills and safety necessary for biking smart. This includes skill drills and routine bike maintenance. Pom Pom Jar Throughout the summer we will reinforce positive behavior with our pom pom jar. Pom poms can be earned for going above and beyond to help out, demonstrating positive social skills, and much more. When the kids have collectively filled the pom pom jar, they will be rewarded with a special toy from home day (no electronics) and party. You will be notified via the site coordinator’s weekly email when a toy from home day is earned! Lost & Found The box is often full of many unclaimed items. Please check the Lost & Found area often. Unclaimed items will be donated at the end of the summer. We will work our way up to street rides, though we will not bike in the street until we are absolutely certain the kids are ready. Please let us know if you would rather your child not participate in the street rides. If you would like to participate in biking at Mpls Kids, please bring your own bike, helmet, and closed toe shoes! Fun Run Training Join the Mpls Kids staff in training for our end of the summer Citywide Fun Run at Wabun Park. Training will take place regularly in the mornings on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. Be sure to wear or bring comfy clothes and sneakers! Our Wonderful Staff We are delighted to be combining staff from our great sites this summer. There will be many familiar faces along with new people to meet. Rest assured, we have the best staff in the area! Please join us in welcoming the new faces! Until everyone becomes familiar with each other, please don’t be offended if we ask for an ID when you pick up your child. Growing our Garden Each day there will be opportunities to help out in our garden. The garden will be planted in May, so it will need weeding, watering, and harvesting throughout the summer. All kids who help in the garden will have their name entered into a flower pot. We will draw names regularly and send our traveling Garden Gnome (and field journal) home with the kid who’s name is drawn. Kids can write in the journal about what they do while they have the gnome (pictures also welcome!). Benefits of Camping This extended field trip fits well into our mission of offering safe and nurturing recreational experiences. Research has shown that overnight camping opportunities promote and enhance a child’s self esteem, self confidence, and social skills. During the overnight camping trip children learn to become self-reliant without their parents. They have to share and get along with other campers. Children also receive the opportunity to relax and experience a natural environment, which for many is very different than their typical urban living space. Author Richard Louv describes camping as, “Fresh air; tall timber; amazing scenery; glimpses of wildlife; vast, memorable starlit nights. Video games are simply no match for the full-scale sensory overload that nature delivers, and a great way to convince anyone age 16 or younger of this truism is to invite them along on a camping trip. Usually all it takes is one meteor bolting across the sky to persuade any young adventurer-in-the-making of a fundamental fact of life—Camping is cool.” Taken from Last Child in the Woods 25 Hale Summer 2015 Optional Swim Lesson Information Considering Swim Lessons at the YWCA? Here’s what you need to know. Swim lessons will be offered in two separate sessions, each session made up of four consecutive Thursdays from 11:30AM-12:30PM at the Midtown YWCA. Swim lessons are an extra fee to parents, paid to the YWCA. Minneapolis Kids will cover the cost of transportation via city bus to swim lessons. Minneapolis Kids staff will accompany kids to and from swim lessons and will be present at the YWCA to help support the lesson instructors. Swim lessons are optional to parents and will consist of the child’s activity for that day. Children will be at swim lessons during activity time, and, therefore, will not attend other community trips listed for that date.
