Vaccine Mind Map Instructions
To introduce a current event related to vaccinations, we will read and compare three sources of
information on vaccinations, culminating in creating a Mind Map on the central themes.
The three sources are:
CDC on Measles and the Vaccine (Shot) to Prevent It (Fact Sheet)
“The vaccine controversy” by, Vreni Gurd (Opinion article)
“In battling measles, Orange County bars students without proof of shots.” (News article)
Materials Needed:
8 ½”x 11” sheet of blank paper (landscape orientation)
Colored pencils
Three sources
5 Steps to Making a Mind Map [Your central idea is MEASLES VACCINE]
1. Start in the CENTER of a blank page turned sideways (landscape).
2. Use an IMAGE or PICTURE for your central idea.
3. Use COLORS throughout.
4. CONNECT your MAIN BRANCHES to the central image and connect your second- and
third-level branches to the first and second levels, etc.
5. Use IMAGES or SYMBOLS throughout.
Grading rubric includes evidence of:
• What is measles? Pathogen, transmission, symptoms
• MMR vaccine-safety, side effects, benefits of vaccinations
• Pro/anti vaccine concerns
• News-Disneyland, Orange County schools
