EA Region is a growing
• The E.African Community (EAC) – is 5
countries with >160 million popn
• 2010, launched common market for
goods, labour and capital
• Plans for common currency &
political federation.
• Monetary union by 2023
• Tourism and free migration of wild
beasts – unaware of borders
• Beautiful beaches and coastal lines in
Mombasa and Dar es Salaam
• These developments provide timely
opportunity for joint health
But years of conflict, drought,
political instability have led to….
We can not continue the slide into failed states and continued self destruction
Predictions into 2030 not so pleasant – Measles,
Pneumonia and Diarrhoeal disease to contribute 60% of all
our under 5 deaths in the EA region
• 70% of all child deaths
in the EA – due to:
• LRTI (pneumonia)
• Diarrhoea (18%),
• Malaria (8%),
• Measles, (4%),
• HIV/AIDS (3%),
• Neonatal
We report improving vaccine coverage, but largely >60% of our children
still die Directly or indirectly due to vaccine preventable illness
HIV has made our situation even more dire
HPV and Related Diseases, Uganda, Country Report, 2014
In some situations we even CAN NOT quantify how big our problem is
Eastern Africa needs an inspiration
If you do NOT understand my pain, you will NEVER understand my praise…
It needs a leadership talking to each other about
EA’s problems : NOT talking at each other
Our collective power, the sum of our parts is greater than our individual might
The EA region needs something to cling on
Divine intervention
Courage is NOT the absence of fear, but the Triumph over it. The brave man is
Not the one who does Not feel afraid, but he who conquers his fear
We have the advantage of a
shared language – KISWAHILI….
