Antigone Mask Project - Ms. Lawson`s English Class

Antigone Mask Project
As we learned before we
started reading the play,
Antigone, the ancient
Greeks used large masks
that represented the
characters in their plays.
For this project, you will
create your own Greek
mask!
Directions: Create a mask for one of the characters or allusions in Antigone that visually
represents the most significant elements of that character or allusion. You will not be graded on
artistic ability, but your mask must be neat, colorful, and clearly illustrate significant elements
of the character. You will also write a short paper explaining your mask.
Choose One:
Characters
Antigone
Ismene
Eurydice
Creon
Haimon
Teiresias
Sentry

Before creating the mask, find 3 pieces of evidence from the text that supports your visual
interpretation. In the case of characters and gods mentioned in allusions, you will need to do
some research online to find evidence.
Creative component (mask) criteria:
• use symbols to clearly represent the significant elements of that character or allusion
• base your mask on 3 pieces of textual evidence from the play (or research, if an allusion)
• use colors and be neat
• be creative!
Writing component criteria:
• include a creative title for your mask
• identify the character or allusion and the page number he or she first appears in the play
• describe the images, symbols, and colors in your mask, explaining why you choose them
and how they relate to the character / allusion
• support your description with 3 pieces of evidence; explain how each quote connects to
a symbol, image, or color on your mask
