P Volume 27 . Number 1 . Spring 2015 Alliance in Action A Publication of the Michigan State Medical Society Alliance President’s Message Time flies when you’re having fun. So true! Here it is March. Spring is just around the corner and so is the end of my term. April 2014 and my installation seem so long ago. The MSMS Alliance has certainly kept me busy and in a really good way. There are so many caring and active Alliance members around our state. I wish I had had more time left to get to know you all personally. What I can say is this: Keep up the Good Work!! Our Michigan State Medical Society Alliance Annual Session will be held May 1 and 2 at The Amway Grand Hotel in Grand Rapids. We will be meeting at the same time as the Michigan State Medical Society is holding their House of Delegates. Be sure to bring your spouse, or vice versa, I guess. If you have paid your state dues, you can attend and vote at the Annual Session. We no longer have “delegates”. You are it. Just register and attend. This is your opportunity to influence the future path of your organization. As our bylaws say: The Annual Session shall A. be the legislative and policy-making body of MSMSA; B. transact all business of the MSMSA not otherwise specifically provided for in these bylaws; C. adopt a budget for the ensuing year; and D. elect the officers and the Nominating Committee. That’s why we need you there. The Annual Session registration form is included in this publication. And if you forgot to renew your state membership this year. Don’t worry, there is still time. Go to our website: www.msmsa.org and use the dues payment form. You can pay by mail or PayPal. Of course, we also want you to enjoy yourself. There are lots of things for you and your spouse to do in Grand Rapids. Many are within walking distance of the hotel: Gerald R. Ford Museum, Grand Rapids Public Museum, DeVos Performance Hall, and lots of nifty restaurants and breweries. Check out www.experiencegr.com/about-grand-rapids for things to do. I hope you will be able to join us on our two group fun activities. We will carpool together Friday afternoon to visit the Frederick Meijer Sculpture Garden. In the evening we will check out Beer City’s offerings. We will have a good time. See you there. Alliance Grassroots Honor Fund to Grant First Two Scholarships By Jean Howard It is a thrill it is to be able to announce that we will be awarding two scholarships this August from the AMA Alliance Grassroots Honor Fund, our own permanently endowed fund within the AMA Foundation. Over the past six years, Alliance members have raised more than $250,000 to make this fund a reality. These scholarships will be awarded to medical students dedicated to improving the health of women and children. Many thanks for all the generous contributions that the Honor Fund received from MI Alliance members. Your continued support helped us reach this milestone and in my mind, it is a dream come true! Sumeghy, Nominated President, has had a long professional and personal association with the healthcare field in Detroit. Having earned a BS in Applied Science from Wayne State University and a MS in Allied Health Education from the University of Michigan, she built a career at Henry Ford Hospital where she is a Point-of-Care Coordinator in the Department of Pathology. She is an active member of the American Association for Clinical Chemistry, in particular the Michigan Section for which she has served on the Board in various capacities, including Michigan Section President. She is married to Federico G. Mariona, MD, who practices Maternal Fetal Medicine and is one of the first Perinatologists in Michigan. Over the years, his active involvement with various medical societies, especially the Wayne County Medical Society, became a way of life for both; very often their vacations were those professional meetings. Thus, when Federico took on the role of President of the WCMSSM a few years ago, it was a relatively easy transition for Clara’s deeper involvement with the Alliance. Today, in her role as President of the WCMSSM-Alliance, Clara is an active participant in fundraising related to domestic violence prevention. She also participates in the WCMSSM Executive, Legislative and Violence Committees. Moreover, she is the current Vice President of the MSMS-Alliance for which she has previously served two terms each as Recording Secretary and as Treasurer. Of the many positive aspects related to her activities has been the opportunity to work with dedicated healthcare professionals — many of whom have become friends — committed to shared goals in medicine at the community, state and national levels. It is with great honor that Clara accepts her new role as President in the service of the MSMSA. Donna Lake, Nominated President-Elect, has been a resident of Jackson, Michigan most of her life. She moved from her home state of Colorado at the age of five, and considers Jackson is her real home. Donna married her high school sweetheart, Jon, and they have now been married for almost 38 years. They have two daughters, one granddaughter and their youngest daughter will be married in September of 2015. After high school, Donna was off to Eastern Michigan University where she earned her BS in teaching, and later earned a Masters in the Art of Teaching from Marygrove College in Detroit. Donna taught hearing impaired children for 12 years, grades K-6, then finished her career by teaching fourth grade students for 20 years, and retired in 2009. Donna has been a member of the Jackson County Medical Society Alliance for fifteen years. She served as president from 2010-2013. She has also been on the MSMSA board since 2010. In addition to Alliance volunteer work, Donna was Jackson Symphony Guild President from 2011-2013, is an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church and is currently serving on the Jackson College Board of Trustees as treasurer. During the last couple of years, she has been a volunteer at The Dahlem Environmental Center where she takes school groups around the grounds of the center for field trips. She loves golfing, biking, walking and spending time with her family and friends. Donna is honored to be nominated for the MSMSA President-elect position, and looks forward to continued service to the MSMSA Board. Janie Gugino, Nominated Secretary, is a lifelong Michigan resident and has lived in Saginaw since 1990. She has been a member of MSMSA and SCMSA since 2003, and NE Regional director 2012-13. She was president of SCMSA 2010-13, and presently on the board. She is married to George J. Gugino, MD-Primary Care physician in Reese, MI. Together they have 6 children, 12 grandchildren and 8 greatgrandchildren. Janie is a partner in a company with two divisions, In the Groove, Knee Brace and Re-trainer, and Another Chance Tourniquet- ACT. She is very active as a volunteer in the Saginaw Community including; past vice president and current board member of the League of Women Voters Saginaw County, Saginaw Art Museum Advisory Council and chair of the garden committee and board member/chair of marketing for Saginaw Choral Society. She also serves as a committee chair to the Saginaw Bay Symphony Orchestra, past president and chair of Advisory Board Inforum Great Lakes Bay Region, secretary of St. Mary’s of Michigan Volunteer Alliance, board member of St. Mary’s of Michigan Foundation and numerous church related positions. She retired in 2008 from the Sales and Marketing field. Her passion is her beautiful and large flower gardens at home, and the ones she helps maintain at the Saginaw Art Museum and her church. Vibha Kaushal, Nominated Treasurer, was born in India and moved to the US with her family at the age of 8. She grew up primarily in Ann Arbor, Michigan and earned her Bachelor in Business Administration (BBA) from Eastern Michigan University. After earning her CPA certification, she worked at the Office of the Auditor General in Lansing for ten years. During her employment, she met and married her husband Sunil, who is a practicing gastroenterologist in Flint. After leaving her employment, Vibha focused on raising their three children, the youngest of whom will start college next year, and volunteering in schools and the community. She currently works part time in her husband’s office. Her interests include gardening, traveling, cooking, and fitness. Vibha has been involved with the (Vibha cont.) Genesee County Medical Society Alliance (GCMSA) since her family moved back to Grand Blanc in 1996 after the completion of her husband’s Gastroenterology fellowship in New York. She has served on various positions with the GCMSA Board including serving as president and secretary from 2012-2014. Vibha is honored to be nominated for the MSMSA treasurer’s position, and looks forward to continued service to the MSMSA Board. Terri Balogh, Nominated Southwest Regional Director, I have been an active member of the Kalamazoo Academy of Medicine Alliance (KAMA) since I married my husband George in 1986. I have been on several committees throughout the years. I am currently in my third year as Co-President of the Kalamazoo County Alliance. I have been on the steering committee for our local CHADD chapter (children and adults with AD/HD) for the last 13 years. I enjoy Civil War re-enacting. July 2013 I joined 25,000 other re-enactors in Gettysburg, PA for a weeklong event. For the last several years I have volunteered at a local school for special needs kids. Every year the kids get to meet Santa and Mrs. Claus and I have the opportunity to take pictures of their faces when they meet Santa. So much fun! My passion is in missions. In the last 10 years I have been on several mission trips. I have been to the Dominican Republic (2004 & 2006), Pura Vida Missions in Costa Rica (2010, 2011, and 2013) and to Zenica, Bosnia in 2013 and am returning in June 2014. Lori Smith, Nominated Southeast Regional Director, grew up in Plymouth/Canton Michigan. After living in Ohio and Kansas, she and her husband, Channing, chose to settle down in Jackson. They have three sons, Yale, Carter and Quintin. Lori received a BA in English Secondary Education from Grand Valley State University. She has held many nonconventional teaching jobs. She had taught senior citizens, alternative education students, and prisoners. She is currently has "the best teaching job ever." She is at Trinity Lutheran teaching 6th, 7th and 8th grades. In addition to Alliance volunteer work, Lori serves in many volunteer positions as an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church. She is a true soccer mom, having up to four teams to support in any given season. She loves reading, University of Michigan football, soccer, the theater, game nights, and, most importantly, spending time with family and friends. Rula Ali Bakr, Nominated Northeast Regional Director, I have been a member of the Alliance for many years. I have held a variety of positions including Co-President of Genesee County Medical Society Alliance where I currently serve as the webmaster. I am currently serving as Facebook Chair for MSMSA. I am looking forward to my new position as NE Regional Director at MSMSA. Health Projects - Childhood Immunizations Merilee Otto Health Promotions Chair, MSMSA As reported in our last issue of Alliance in Action, MSMSA joined with several other organizations in supporting new legislation that will require parents to receive critical information about childhood immunizations, before they can opt out of having their child immunized. The changes allow parents to make decisions based on sound information and careful consideration. Families choosing not to immunize their children will still be able to do so, but they will be supported with a consistent, detailed assessment of the personal and public health implications of their choices. This important change was approved December 10, 2014, and went into effect on January 1, 2015. We are hopeful that this will have a positive impact on rates of immunization in the state of Michigan, however, there is still work to be done in educating everyone about the value of childhood immunizations. Let's continue our efforts! Following is a link for more information from MSMS about this legislation. http://www.msms.org/AboutMSMS/ News/tabid/178/ID/2456/NewChildhood-Immunization-Guidelineswill-Mean-Healthier-SaferMichigan.aspx Just as a reminder, here is still money available to counties through the annual MSMSA health grant as well as the "Project in a Day" grant. If you have not already done so please take advantage of this opportunity and apply today! We want to support you in your efforts to promote health in your county. Body Works exhibit at Muskegon’s Lakeshore Museum Center New Muskegon Alliance Endowment Fund Cindy Ackerman, MCMSA President The Muskegon County Medical Society Alliance has established an endowment fund for the purpose of funding our Body Works exhibit at Muskegon’s Lakeshore Museum Center. Alliance members started Body Works over 20 years ago and have contributed funds and docent hours to keep the exhibit relevant and updated. Body Works is an interactive hands-on exhibit that shows children what happens when young people make poor health choices such as smoking, drinking, eating too many sweets and failing to wear protective gear and sunscreen. MCMSA wants to make sure that Body Works is able to educate and entertain youngsters for years to come. After all, healthy children should grow up to make healthy communities. Wayne County Medical Society Alliance Clara Sumeghy, WCMSA President The Wayne County Medical Society Foundation held their annual Children’s Holiday Party in December at the Detroit Science Center. Contributions were received from the Alliance as well as over 100 physicians, family and friends to make this event memorable for 180 children. Alliance members Dr. Marty Barbour (Santa) and Judy Barbour with the assistance of 30 Wayne State University Medical Students, the Staff and other volunteers helped make this another wonderful event for the Children and adults. Report from the Bylaws Committee There have been no proposed changes to the MSMSA bylaws. Consequently, none will be presented at the 89th Michigan State Medical Society Alliance Annual Session. Wayne County Medical Society Foundation‘s Children’s Holiday Party November - Women’s Health Issues Ruqsana Ahmed – President GCMSA On Tuesday, November 18th, 2014 Genesee County Alliance was treated to a well-presented and fascinating women’s health overview as well as a lively and healthy dance session! The group met at the Flint Institute of Music where Dr. Parul Sud gave a very comprehensive but concise outline of a plethora of women’s health issues. Dr. Sud gave us many, many tips and reminders. Needless to say, everyone thoroughly enjoyed the presentation and asked many good questions. After a tasty boxed lunch, the group moved into one of the dance studios at the FIM where super dancer Jeanette Rivera taught the group a dance called the Bachta. It was good to move our bodies, learn something new and exercise at the same time to this popular dance from the Dominican Republic. Jeanette made the healthy workout lots of fun! Abuse and Indifference Set the Stage for Human Trafficking Michigan Empowers Victims Cheryl Thoms organized the GCMS Alliance October meeting held at the Signature Chop House in Flushing that featured sex trafficking survivor/leader Joyce Haskett as the keynote speaker. The event was attended by over 75 people including alliance members, legislators, the faith based community and many others. Cheryl represents the alliance on the Genesee County Human Trafficking Task Force, Public Awareness and Community Outreach Committee. Speaker Joyce Haskett spoke at the meeting about her experiences as a victim of human trafficking, how it destroyed her sense of self-worth, and how, in desperation, she killed her pimp in order to escape. She was charged with premeditated murder, imprisoned and after many appeals, she was released. Ms. Haskett now spends most of her time educating people about Human Trafficking and its insidious nature. Fortunately for other trafficking victims, Michigan recently passed laws enabling law enforcement, providers and victims to crack down in situations like Haskett’s. Above: Dr. Parul Sud addressing The Genesee County Alliance Ruqsana Ahmed, Joyce Haskett with Senator Judy Emmons, Jay Kommareddi, Cherl Thom Left: Jeanette Rivera teaching the Bachta WOMEN WHO COUNT by Barb Pougnet The Genesee County Medical Society Alliance Investment Club was formed January 10, 2000 with 30 Alliance members contributing to the partnership. After 15 years, our membership has decreased to 12 knowledgeable, busy, energetic women. These years have been filled with fun, laughter, heated discussions, new ideas, sharing of information, extended learning curve and depression over our various stock picks but most valuable of all, new friendships. Midland County Alliance Youth Group Collection for the House of Mercy By Michaele Bartlett and Judy Adams Midland County Alliance Youth Group The Midland County Alliance Youth Group had a very successful collection of donations for the homeless women’s shelter in Midland entitled The House of Mercy. Dozens of people were involved in the endeavor including donations, prepping and wrapping of all of the gifts for the women and children housed there during the holiday season. Jackson County Alliance By Kelly Narkiewicz, President AMAA Annual Meeting The AMA Alliance will hold its Annual Session on June 7, 2015 through June 9, 2015 in Chicago at the Hyatt Magnificent Mile Hotel 633 North Saint Clair Street, 60611. The Annual Session is the legislative and policy-making body of the AMAA. Everyone who has paid national dues and registered is invited to attend. The MSMSA contributes to the cost of 5 attendees at the AMAA Annual Session. Those attendees will be chosen at the MSMSA Annual Session May 2nd. The hotel is accepting hotel reservations for the upcoming event. You can book rooms through a link on the AMAA website. Jackson County Alliance had a successful Doctors and their Families Make a Difference Day providing multiple necessities to the woman and children shelter in town. JCMA enjoyed a holiday cocktail party in conjunction with the Medical Society. The Alliance had a great showing and included the new residents in the area as well. Everyone brought a new toy to donate to the interfaith shelter. The Alliance is planning on helping with a blood drive on March 11, working and donating cookies. JCMA is planning a large summer pot luck fundraiser for the pediatric area of our hospital. JCMA is keeping busy. MSMSA GRANTS There is still time to apply for your $250 Health Project Grant and the $500 “Project in a Day” Immunization Grant. If your County Alliance has not applied the last opportunity to request grant funds for fiscal year 2014-2015 is at the Executive Committee meeting prior to Annual Session May 1st in Grand Rapids. Applications are on the www.msmsa.org website. Kent County Medical Alliance Keeps Busy By Beth Junewick, President The Kent County Medical Society held their Annual Holiday Tea on Tuesday, December 9 at the beautiful home of Cynthia Matelic. We had a wonderful showing of Alliance members. At the tea, we collected items in our pink bags for Safe Haven Shelter. Doctors and their Families Make a Difference co-chairs Connie Mead and Kim Shammas delivered the bags to the shelter. Members also brought a wrapped gift and cookies to the tea for the holiday party for the children of Baxter Community Center preschool. The Preschool holiday party was held the following morning, December 10, and was chaired by Cynthia Matelic. The children made a craft, decorated a cookie, played games led by some of our members’ children, and finally opened gifts that will stay with the preschool for future learning and play! Our 25th Annual Charity Ball was held on January 31. It was held in an old warehouse called Cheney Place, our chairwoman, Karen Begrow and her planning committee did an amazing job! We even had a Flash Mob! We do not yet have final numbers, but we did surpass our goal of $60,000. Our two charity recipients will be Ele’s Place, a center for grieving children and their families, and Baxter Community Center’s Child Development Center, which will use the funds to build a new NAEYC accredited play area. In March our General Membership Meeting will be held at Sanford House which is a residential and outpatient center for women struggling with addiction to drugs and alcohol, located in Grand Rapids. Dr. Sandra Dettman, one of our Alliance members, is the new Medical Director. Some of the items Kent County Medical Society Alliance collected for Safe Haven Shelter MSMSA Legislative Day 2015 Karin Maupin MSMSA and KCMSA Legislative Chairman MSMSA held its first Legislative Day for 2015 on February 24th. We received a very good response from membership who have become grassroots lobbyists in their own right. We began the day at MSMS Headquarters with a quick overview of timely issues from Steve Japinga Chief, Public Policy and Legislative Affairs for the Michigan State Medical Society. Later Andrew Schepers, MSMS Chief Grassroots and Legislative Policy and Josh Richmond Director of Membership and Political Fund Raising joined us. A new strategy was employed in which we stood outside the Senate and House and commandeered our representatives. This was exciting and interesting new method of interaction. A constituent can make a written request to speak to their representative while either House is in session. Senators were caucusing (a meeting of a political party to shape policy) when we arrived. We were successful in gaining their attention and members had some very important conversations. The House, however was in session, but the room was empty. Making an appointment or conducting a meeting with representatives present appears to be the most effective way to speak with legislators. However, waiting in the “lobby” to catch a legislator is another method to add to our repertoire. Issues that were topical and addressed on Legislative Day included: SB 68 (formally SB2) has been (re) introduced into the Senate by Mike Shirkey and Rebekah Warren. This is the Nurse Practitioner Scope of Practice Bill. MSMS does not support SB 68 and is in the process of writing an alternative plan that focuses on team-based care, which is physician led. Patients are best served by a team based approach that provides the maximum amount of choice for their care while ensuring that they benefit from the additional training and expertise of a physician. A highly functioning health care team is the best way to serve patients while addressing access issues. (MSMS) Michigan is struggling with a projected revenue shortfall of $550 million. Governor Snyder has proposed a cut of $5 million to Graduate Medical Education (GME) as part of the answer to solving the deficit. In the very near future Michigan will face shortages of thousands of doctors. Three new medical schools are being approved Western, Central and Oakland Universities. Studies repeatedly demonstrate that one of the best ways to recruit and retain physicians is via local medical schools and residency programs. Michigan has been a leader in expanding medical school class sizes to address the projected demand for physician services. GME helps fill the gap in underserved areas by providing extremely low cost care to those most in need. It is imperative that we continue to fund GME slots to allow these future physicians to learn here in Michigan, train here in Michigan, and stay here in Michigan. Our State has the distinction of ranking the fourth highest in parents seeking waivers to vaccine requirements. These nonmedical exemptions mean the state runs the risk of outbreaks in diseases such as diphtheria, measles, mumps, whooping cough, rubella, smallpox and even polio. A proposal was filed by the Department of Community Health with the Secretary of State to request changes to the 1978 Michigan Public Health Code. The change requires parents of schoolaged children who seek a “philosophical exemption” to immunization requirements to have their waiver certified by their local health department. Each individual requesting an exemption must receive local health education about the benefits of vaccinations and the risks of not receiving the vaccines being waived All students lacking documentation of immunizations are considered susceptible to a communicable disease and will be restricted from attending school until there is no risk of disease spread. County Alliances and their membership have actively created awareness and supported legislation. However the change in law will require expanded education about the benefits of immunization. We need to continue to look at ways at strengthening our immunizations rules in Michigan. Another major issue that Alliance members have focused on is Human Trafficking. Surprisingly Michigan is one of the top five states for human trafficking, an issue that many may not be aware. There is an estimate, in Western Michigan alone, there are as many as 2400 minors for sale at any time. Many hours have been spent by Genesee County membership lobbying legislators to support Human Trafficking Legislation. Genesee County participated in Legislative Day in full force and continued dialogue. In October Governor Rick Snyder signed legislation MSMSA delegation with Senators Peter MacGregor and Tonya Shuitmaker protecting Michigan citizens from human trafficking and supporting victims by putting some of the strongest policies in the nation into place to combat this crime. Public Acts 324 and 325 (legislation sponsored by Senator Judy Emmons & Rep. Kurt Heiseand) make human trafficking punishable by imprisonment for life and permanently creates the State Human Trafficking Commission with the Attorney General’s Office. There is still much to be done, including finding the victims. Lobbying and grassroots activism takes patience and perseverance. Our Founding Fathers created a system of government that did not make capricious decisions. Checks and balances and divided government were instituted to protect democracy and ensure our most important freedoms. For those however anxious to correct injustices the system can be slow and frustrating. However in recent years issues that have great support amongst our membership have moved forward!
