Your Visit With Th e Doctor
After your visit to our lab, you will go to your doctor’s waiting area (at Russel Hill location,
look for your physician’s name on the signs above each door entrance). A medical assistant
will escort you to the vital signs area (blood pressure, temperature, weight) and to see your
doctor. Please present your list of medications to the assistant (always keep a current list
of your medications with you). After your doctor visit, you will need to schedule your next
appointment with his/her scheduler. You will receive all information you will need for your
future visits. If you are having radiation and chemotherapy at the same time, please let our
scheduler know. You will then receive further directions if you are scheduled for a treatment.
Your Treatment
Your treatments are given in the Infusion Area. This area is designed for our patients receiving
intravenous hydration, chemotherapy, antibiotics or other medical treatments.
Registered nurses will educate you in understanding the effects of your illness and treatment.

Some of the most common tests we do are as follows:
X-ray - an X-ray (radiograph) is a painless medical test that helps physicians diagnose and
treat medical conditions. Radiography involves exposing a part of the body to a small dose
of ionizing radiation to produce pictures of the inside of the body. The x-ray process takes
approximately 10 minutes, unless it is a skeletal survey which takes 45 minutes.
MRI - MR Imaging (MRI) uses a powerful magnetic field, radio waves and a computer to
produce detailed pictures of organs, soft tissues, bone and virtually all other internal body
structures. MRI does not use ionizing radiation (X-rays). Some types of MRI require the
administration of a contrast material, gadolinium. Gadolinium does not contain iodine and
is less likely to cause an allergic reaction. The MRI process takes approximately 1 hour.
Ultrasound - Ultrasound imaging, also called sonography, involves exposing part of the body
to high-frequency sound waves to produce pictures of the inside of the body. Ultrasound
exams do not use ionizing radiation (X-ray). Because ultrasound images are captured in realtime, they can show the structure and movement of the body’s internal organs, as well as blood
flowing through blood vessels. The ultrasound process takes approximately 30 minutes.

Medical Oncology
CTScan - Computed Tomography is an imaging method that uses x-rays to create crosssectional pictures of the body. During the test you will lie on a table that is hooked to the
CT scanner. The scan lasts less than a second and takes a picture of a thin slice of the organ
or area being scanned. An iodine dye is often used to make structures and organs easier to
see. You may be asked to drink an oral contrast if we are scanning your abdomen or pelvis.
The CT scan process takes approximately 20 minutes.
PETScan - Positron Emission Tomography is a nuclear medicine imaging technique which
produces a three dimensional image allowing a doctor to look at a body organ from every
angle and detect potential problems. A short-lived radioactive tracer isotope is injected into a
vein. There is a waiting period while the metabolically active molecule becomes concentrated
in tissues of interest. The entire process takes approximately 2 to 2-1/2 hours.
NuclearM edicine - uses imaging tests to produce pictures of both the body’s anatomy
and functions. Sophisticated instruments detect energy given off by very small amounts of
radioactive material given to the patient intravenously or by mouth. Nuclear medicine differs
from most other imaging in that the tests primarily show the physiological function of the
system being investigated as opposed to the anatomy. The most common tests include bone
scans, MUGA scans, and liver/spleen scans.
NOTE: All times listed for imaging scans are approximate. Actual duration of scan is dependant
on the body system being imaged.
Receiving Results
You will receive the results of your imaging studies at your next scheduled appointment.
During that appointment our physicians will explain to you in detail the results of your
studies and answer any questions that you may have regarding the studies.

Our Other Cancer Care Services
Research/Clinical Trials
Clinical trials, conducted in phases, are research studies (involving patents) which determine
if a new treatment is as effective as the standard treatment. We offer the latest clinical research
trials for patients deemed appropriate by their physician. We have a fully-staffed research
department monitoring the trials to ensure patient safety and privacy. Patients participating
in clinical trials will receive the standard of care treatment, with possible additional
treatments. Each trial has certain criteria requirements that must be met prior to patient
participation. Patients will be informed of process, sign a consent form, and only remain on
trial if the treatment is effective and beneficial.
Clearview participates in all phases of clinical trials; however, Phase 1 research trials are only
offered to cancer treatment centers with proven success, experience and credibility. Phase
1 research trials require more oversight/monitoring than other trials and are conducted
in a newly-opened clinical area specifically designed for Phase 1 (second floor, Russel Hill
location). For patients that qualify, these trials offer access to the latest treatments to enter the
drug approval and research process.
If you would like additional information about research at Clearview Cancer Institute, please
see our website, www.clearviewcancer.com or call (256) 705-4224 and ask for the Research
Department.
Genetic Counseling
If you have several family members or multiple generations of relatives who have been diagnosed
with cancer, you may benefit from genetic counseling. Genetic counseling may be available
to our patients and their families, as well as anyone in our community with significant
family histories of cancer. For further information or questions, speak with your physician.
Stem Cell Transplant Services
Clearview Cancer Institute works with Huntsville Hospital to provide this community
service. During this treatment, the patient donates his/her own cells (called stem cells) which
grow important parts of the bone marrow and blood. When enough of these cells have been
collected and stored in a special freezer, the patient receives very high doses of chemotherapy
to kill all the cancer cells. This treatment improves survival for some patients with Multiple
Myeloma, Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, and certain leukemias. Your
oncologist will recommend this treatment if he or she feels it will benefit you.
Clearview Cancer Institute Pharmacy (Russel Hill location only)
Clearview Cancer Institute’s Pharmacy at the Russel Hill location is a full-service pharmacy located
on the first floor near the elevators. Our pharmacy is available to anyone in the community
for prescription purchases. The pharmacy is open Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.
(closed daily for lunch from 12:30 p.m. - 1:30 p.m.). Our phone number is (256) 327-5900.

Radiation Oncology is a clinical and scientific specialty dedicated to the
management of patients with cancer (and occasionally a few non-malignant
conditions) through radiation, or in combination with surgery and/or
chemotherapy. There are two main types of radiation therapy: external beam
radiation therapy and internal radiation therapy.
External beam radiation is also known as X-Ray therapy and intensity modulated
radiation therapy (IMRT). This type of radiation is administered using a
treatment machine called a linear accelerator. Treatments are typically given in
small daily doses, for several weeks, depending on the total and final dose of
radiation that is planned/prescribed by the Radiation Oncologist.
Internal radiation therapy (also called brachytherapy) is achieved by implanting
“sources or seeds” (small pieces of the radioactive substance) or by using an
implanted device called a “reservoir”, into which a liquid radioactive substance
is injected. This delivers very intense radiation to a small area of the body, thus
limiting the exposure to the normal tissue.

Radiation Oncology
Our Radiation Oncology Services
»
Radiation Oncologists specialize in the treatment and management of cancer patients undergoing
radiation therapy. The physician will develop treatment plans, monitor the patient’s progress, adjust
the treatment dosage when appropriate, and treat side effects caused by the radiation therapy.
IGRT is image-guided radiation therapy, a technique which enables the Radiation Oncologist
to locate the tumor before each dose of radiation therapy is delivered.
IMRT is image-guided radiation therapy which allows the Radiation Oncologist to pinpoint
the radiation on the tumor. This technique spares more normal tissue exposed to radiation
during treatment.
MammoSite is designed for the treatment of early-stage breast cancer patients who meet
certain criteria. This specialized treatment consists of 10 treatments within 5 days. MammoSite
will deliver a high dose of radiation to the area most at risk for recurrence. In addition, it
limits the radiation dose to the surrounding normal breast and adjacent tissues, potentially
minimizing side effects.
Prostate Brachytherapy is a treatment for early-stage prostate cancer. This procedure is
an ultrasound-guided implantation of radioiodine seeds into the prostate. It is a one-time
procedure and is performed on an outpatient basis and takes approximately 2 hours.

Frequently Asked Questions
»
Our Clearview Cancer Institute team recognizes that this is a difficult time for you.
The following are some guidelines to assist in your care.
Treatment Considerations
If I am having chemotherapy and radiation at the same time, can I coordinate both
appointment times?
» We will make every effort to help you schedule your chemotherapy appointment as close
to your radiation appointment as possible. Please let us know if you are having radiation
treatment.
Are there any special guidelines regarding fluid intake?
» When you are receiving chemotherapy treatments, increase fluid intake to at least 8-12
eight-ounce glasses of fluids the day prior to treatment, the day of treatment, and the day
after treatment (Unless otherwise instructed by your physician or nurse).
What vitamins, medications, etc. am I allowed to take while undergoing chemotherapy treatment?
» Please consult your physician as every patient’s care is individualized.
How should I dress for my appointment?
» Dress in layers such as sweaters or jackets which may be removed if you become warm
or put on if you become cold.
» Wear front button shirts if you have a central venous catheter (port) which needs to be used
for your treatment.
Can I wear perfume or cologne to my appointment?
» Strong smelling perfumes or lotions are discouraged due to other patients’ sensitivities.
Are there any foods I should avoid eating?
» Please avoid foods with strong odors.
Can I bring my own food into Clearview Cancer Institute?
» Yes, but please avoid foods with strong odors. Be sensitive of other patients around you.
» Our patients are offered small snacks and beverages at no charge from our hospitality cart
that is staffed by our volunteers. There are also vending and soda machines available for
you or your family members in our downstairs break room. Please ask a staff member
for directions.
Children and Visitors/Infection Control
Can I bring family and/or friends with me during my appointments or treatments?
» Only one family member (13 years of age or older) may be allowed to sit with a patient
during treatment. However, in some of our office locations, visitors will not be allowed to sit
with patients during treatment due to space limitations.
Is there a minimum age requirement for children accompanying a patient?
» Due to the compromised auto-immune systems of our patients we request that
young children DO NOT visit the facility.
» Children under 13 years of age are not allowed in treatment areas.

Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do if my friend or family member who usually accompanies me to my visit is
sick with a cold or mild infection on the day of my appointment?
» Since many of our patients are especially susceptible to infections, we ask that those
with even mild infections, such as a cold or sore throat, not accompany patients to
the office.
» Our volunteers are available to visit with you, provide snacks and assorted beverages,
movies, magazines or books on tape to make your stay as comfortable as possible.
Prescription Refills
What do I do if I forgot to ask for a prescription refill during my appointment with my physician?
» We ask that you prepare a list of refills you may need ahead of time and give it to your
physician during your office visit.
» However, if you will be running out of your medication prior to your next scheduled visit,
have your pharmacist call in the prescription refill request to our office.
Where may I pick-up my prescription refills?
» You may pick up handwritten prescriptions at the front desk of each facility.
