Box 118 Pittsboro, MS 38951 May 1, 2015 4-H Handy Helpers The 4-H Handy Helpers club will meet on Monday, May 18, 2015 at 3:30 p.m. The meeting will be held at the Multi Purpose Building in Pittsboro. 4-H Kids In the Kitchen Upcoming Events Boat Safety 5/2/15 Electric Contest 5/5/15 A Stitch in Time 5/11/15 The 4-H Kids in the Kitchen club will meet Handy Helpers on Thursday, May 21, 2015 at 3:30 p.m. The club meeting will be held at the Multi Kids in the Kitchen Purpose Building in Pittsboro. 5/18/15 5/21/15 “A Stitch in Time” 4-H Sewing Club The 4-H sewing club will meet on Monday, May 11, 2015. We will meet at the MultiPurpose Building in Pittsboro. The activity will be working on your poncho project. Boat Safety A Boat Safety course will be taught by Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks on Saturday, May 2, 2015. The class will begin at 8 a.m. and end at 2:00 p.m. The class will be held at the Multi Purpose Building in Pittsboro. Calhoun County Fair The Calhoun County Fair will be held July 20-25, 2015! Start making your plans to compete in the many fun fair activities. Remember, any crafts you made, items you sewed, chickens you raise or photography you have can be entered in the exhibit contest. We will award ribbons and prize money. Some tentative fair activities we have planned are Fair Queen Pageant, Youth/Adult Exhibit contest, Meat Goat Show, Rodeo, Youth and Adult Horse Show (new this year) and Youth Cook-Off. Electric Contest The 4-H Electric workshop followed by a contest will be held on Tuesday, May 5th, 2015 at 3:30 p.m. We will meet at the Multi Purpose Building in Pittsboro. Please let me know if you plan to attend by calling 412-3177. 4-H Shooting Sports Congratulations to all our 4-H youth who competed at the N.E. Region 4-H Shooting Sports contest. Project Achievement Day The N.E. District Project Achievement Day contest will be held on Friday, June 19th, 2015 in Fulton. This event is for youth 8-13 years of age as of December 31. Let me know by Wednesday, May 13, if you plan to participate. This is a great contest opportunity for our Jr. Age 4-H youth. Poultry Chain Youth who signed up for poultry chain should be prepared to pick chicks up during the week of May 18-21, 2015. You will need to prepare your box with light, feed, waterer and etc….Make sure your coop is sterilized clean if you have used it recently. Keep temperature at chick level at 90 degrees Fahrenheit and lower temp 5 degrees each week until you reach 70 degrees. Some days you may not need light (heat) due to warm temperatures. Do not place chicks with any chickens you already have. Make sure you keep good records. The record book is 50% of the project score. Pictures are great to place in your record book as you prepare for arrival of your project chicks. 4-H Fair Concession and Pot Luck If your child participates in 4-H activities, please plan to assist July 20-25, 2015 as a volunteer at the Fair. We will need help with 4-H concessions, 4-H pot luck and exhibit contests. This includes 4-H sewing club, Handy Helpers, Kids in the Kitchen, Shooting Sports, Horse and Livestock club parents. 4-H Livestock Club Let me know if we have any new exhibitors planning to show livestock. I need to work with them to complete livestock ethics training. Union County Goat Show-July 13, 2015 Calhoun County Fair-July 20-25-, 2015 Calhoun County Goat Show-July 22, 2015 Neshoba County Goat Show-July 24-31 (goats probably July 30-31, 2015) I do not have any county fair hog show dates at this time. MS State Fair at Jackson: Beef-October 9-12, 2015 Swine-October 11-12, 2015 Goats-October 15-17, 2015 4-H Horse Club Thanks to each of you who signed up to show at the District and State 4-H Horse shows. May 2-Rockin MC at West Point (speed events, etc…) May 2-Mathiston Saddle Club Horse Show May 16-Prairie, MS-Monroe County Saddle Club May 16-Blessing Others Ranch Rodeo-Pittsboro May 30-Mathiston Saddle Club Horse Show May 3o-Blessing Others Ranch Rodeo Company-Pittsboro Some of these above show dates/locations could change due to weather, etc…Can check some club’s activities on their Facebook page for changes. Make sure you have your Coggins papers when traveling with your horses. There have been some positive cases of Coggins in Northeast, MS. All exhibitors will be required to have their original registration or grade papers and original negative (12 month) Coggins when you check in at the 4-H shows. Only the original Coggins papers, original registration paper and/or original grade forms will be accepted. Rule Books: I ask that you review the rule book and information for the event you signed up to compete in. Also, a contestant competing in barrels, poles, and stakes race classes must wear a properly fitted ASTM/SEI equestrian helmet with a fastened chin harness. DO NOT unfasten your helmet in speed events while exiting the arena. Photography, horse art, stall decorating, t-shirt, public speaking and other non-riding contest entries are due to me by Wednesday, May 13, 2015. Rules are in rule book. All horses qualifying for the State 4-H horse show must enter and pay all fees as set up by the District Show. There will be no substitutions, additions, etc...made after the District Show day. It is the exhibitors responsibility to see that all entries and fees are properly made and paid at the appropriate times and checked for corrections. Each individual will be responsible for paying his or her own expenses at the conclusion of each show day at the District and State show. The Regional qualifying entries will also have to be completed the day you qualify at the show. Good luck to each of you at the 4-H horse shows.
