Families Growing Together
“Families Growing Together” is a 6-week program
designed to teach adults & children basic gardening techniques
and the benefits of eating healthy & home-grown produce.
Participants will get an opportunity to learn to
grow healthier food and prepare it at home. The program is open to new and experienced gardeners. Children are welcome and can attend a health and nutrition class designed for ages 5 to 18. Participants will
meet every other week, beginning
March 31st and ending June 8,
2015. Classes will meet at the MSU
Coastal Plain Experiment Station
and other locations in the county. A
June awards program will feature the food produced
by participants throughout the program.
Registration is required so sign-up by March 13,

Kids Under Construction
Sewing 101 - Are you interested in
learning basic sewing skills? The
Newton County Extension Service
will offer an 8-week basic sewing
program for youth ages 8-18. If you
are interested in participating,
please call the Extension office to
join the group. After joining, you
will receive a basic sewing supply list. Use your
own sewing machine, if possible, if not some will be
available in class. This program begins on February
23 at 3:30 pm in the Extension Conference Room.
County 4-H Junior
Council
The County Council is an important
part of the 4-H program. The Council
is open to all youth in 4-H, especially
those who hold an office in their 4-H
club. If you have ideas or suggestions,
please attend these meetings and
bring a friend. The Council meetings
will be held quarterly. The next Council meeting is scheduled for February
26th at 4:00 at Pizza Hut in Newton.

Keep Your Records On Track
March 3, 2015 at 4:00 p.m.
Ok let’s get back on track with our records. We want to increase Newton County’s records program by at
least 10 record books turned in this year. You should include all 4-H activities completed from July 1,
2014 through June 30, 2015. Don’t wait until the deadline to start trying to compile your record book.
You can win money and trips from submitting a record book.
Due Dates: Senior Record and Resumes (ages 15-18) and Volunteer Record Books should be turned
in to the 4-H office by June 19, 2015. Junior/Intermediate Records (ages 8-14) and Club Records are due
July 10, 2015. We will begin compiling record books on March 3rd at the 4-H office. Bring all your pictures and a journal of dates that you participated in your project area. Remember to call the 4-H office at
601-635-7011 if you plan to attend.
Horse Photography Contest Clinic will be conducted for any youth
interested in this competition. If you are interested, please call to put
your name on the list by March 1. The date of this training will be held
in April and May if there is interest.
Horse Art Contest Workshop will be conducted for any youth interested in this competition. If you are interested in this, please call to
put your name on the list by March 1. The date of this training will be held in April and
May if there is interest.
If you would like to submit Horse Art or Horse Photography without participating in a Clinic,
please submit your art or photographs by May 30, 2015.

Photography Exhibit Contest
Do you enjoy taking pictures and sharing them with friends and family. If so, the photography contest
may be just what you’ve been waiting on. The photographs submitted in this contest must be taken by
the 4-H member submitting the entry. Photographs may be of ANYTHING! That’s appropriate!!! Let
your creativity show in your photos. This contest is open to any youth ages 5-18. Photographs may be
from a 35 mm, digital, but there are rules associated with how the photographs can be submitted. All
photographs should be mailed to the 4-H office by April 15, 2015. For more information about the submission rules for this contest, please call the 4-H office at 601-635-7011.
Club Congress is the State Competition for 4-H
members age 14-18 as of January 1, 2015. Youth
must participate in the county contest to advance to
the Club Congress event. Youth must be involved in
a 4-H club or be a 4-H member at-large for a complete year to participate in Club Congress. Club Congress will be held at MSU May 27-May 29, 2015. The
registration fee to participate is $115.00. For more
information on how you can participate in the competitions please call the 4-H office at 601-635-7011.
Project Achievement Day is the District
Competition for 4-H members age 8-13, as
of January 1, 2015. Youth must participate
in the county contest to advance to the District Project Achievement Day which will be
held in Ellisville June, 2015. For more information on how you can participate in the

Shooting Sports
It’s time to start thinking of Shooting Sports for this year! Many of you have been waiting
for this time and are very excited! We will have our organizational meeting on February
21, 2015 at 9:00 a.m. The meeting will be held at the Coastal Plain Experiment Station in Newton. This is a very important meeting so please make
plans to attend. We will be filling out paperwork for the new year. All attendees will receive 1 hour of safety training that will go toward the eight hours that are required. We
will be offering the following disciplines this year: shotgun, rifle, air rifle, air pistol, pistol
and archery. Some disciplines have age requirements.
Livestock
Livestock season is coming to an end for this year but it’s never too soon to start planning for the upcoming year. We had a great County Show and Sale. Thanks for all the hard work! Everyone’s animals
looked great! As soon as I get dates for the summer shows I will send out those dates. If you need any
assistance in finding and picking your animals please let me know. I will be happy to help you find those
animals.
Community Service Corner
You Can Make A Difference
Supper Club
Mark your calendar for Monday March 5th, beginning at 5:30 p.m. for the county volunteer leader training that will be held at the 4-H office. The Supper Club will be the night to share your favorite casserole
and/or dessert, so bring your favorite recipe to share with everyone. Please call the 4-H office if you
plan to attend.
Newton Ambassador Program
All teen ages 13 to 18 are encouraged to attend these trainings. Your assistance will aid in your volunteer hours and assisting the 4-H staff with workshops, activities and camps. For more information,

Pleasant Grove 4-H Club ~ meets at the Newton Library on the first
Monday of each month at 3:30 pm. (03/02, 04/06, 05/04)
Robotics 4-H Club ~ meets at the Extension Office in
Decatur on the 3rd Thursday of each month at 4:00 p.m.

4-H Scholarships Available
If you are a 2015 graduating Senior and have
been ACTIVE in 4-H at least 3 years, there is
an opportunity to apply for the Linda Mason
MHV 4-H Scholarship. Please call the 4-H office at 601-635-7011 by March 15, 2015 to
receive an application.
Scholarships through Mississippi 4-H
Mississippi 4-H is once again offering graduating seniors an opportunity to apply for scholarships.
These scholarships are available to 4-Hers who are eligible to apply. All applications are due into the
Newton County office by March 25, 2015. For more information regarding these scholarships, please
