Volume 1 Issue 2 January 2015 WCPSS Mount Vernon News The Official Newsletter of Mt. Vernon Middle School Principal’s Message Special points of interest: Parent Events at MVMS Booster Program Spotlight on Student: Ana Cristina Guerrero Ramirez Field trips Friday Specials and U-Rock activities High School Corner Inside this issue: I would like to begin by congratulating the over 50% of our student population that made the Gold, Silver, or Bronze Honor Roll on their 1st quarter report cards. These are clear indicators that students are working towards developing positive habits that can contribute to their continued success in school. Our students have experienced an encouraging first half of the school year and are continuing to focus on Mt. Vernon’s priorities of Safety, Achievement, Integrity, and Leadership. We have a busy 3rd quarter coming up as we begin to really focus on preparation for End Of Grade testing and North Carolina Final Exams. As we continue in this effort to prepare our students for success, we’d like to offer a few reminders to parents as you support your child’s success at school. First, please remember that the Mt. Vernon Student Dress Code requires students to wear tan khaki pants, a solid white, solid black, or solid gray shirt (no writing), and if needed a black, white or gray coat. Shoes can be any combination of black, white, and gray. Also, please remind students that they are expected to arrive at school with their materials (pen, pencil, and notebook). Additional materials that are needed can be provided in the classrooms. Finally, parents please make sure that you are reviewing and signing your child’s SAIL sheet each night. These are sent home each day as feedback from your child’s teachers and it is very important that we receive signed SAIL sheets back in homeroom the next day. This is also an excellent way to monitor your child’s homework. We have seen the students make tremendous growth and progress during the first semester. We hope you have seen this as well. Please help by continuing to provide guidance and direction for your children as they focus on preparing for their future as successful students and productive citizens. Next, Mt. Vernon celebrated another wonderful Turkey in the Hole Thanksgiving Feast. Approximately 365 people shared in the delicious meal that was prepared by students, staff, and volunteers. Seventeen turkeys were cleaned, prepared, wrapped and cooked by Bridges and Mt. Vernon staff! Then, staff, students, and families came together to create holiday decorations during our annual Gingerbread House family night. More than 100 guests enjoyed eating candy and making gingerbread houses with their families. Finally, students showcased their talents in singing, dancing, and public speaking to their peers, families, and community guests at our Holiday Program. quarter!! Garner Middle School. She had a rocky start and let “kids influence her decisions so her grades dropped.” She came into the program as “a girl who would literally say whatever was on her mind” which didn’t always have a positive outcome. She was able to learn from her mistakes and get the support needed to become a better student, as well as, present herself in a positive manner in and outside of school. Her grades drastically improved second semester. She finished her semester as an 8th grader with A’s and B’s and will transition to high school on January 21st with two high school credits on her transcript. She will be an awesome student! 8th Grade News Mr. Riordan joined our reach him, his email is staff in place of Mr. Cox [email protected]. for 8th grade Social Studies. Each presenter brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to share with our students. They make presentations and then take questions from the students. Students are truly engaged.
