Mundesley newsletter spring 2015

A frequent topic of conversation at present is the potential reinstatement of the Trafalgar Court Slope which, as you will remember, suffered great damage during the
2013 tidal surge. NNDC contracted a firm of consulting engineers to carry out a assessment of the cliff to understand its structural integrity and thus devise possible
solutions to its repair. In the report, which can be viewed online, it became apparent
that the estimated cost of repairs would be in the region of £200,000. Although, this
sum is far beyond our budget, Mundesley Parish Council began to look ways in which
we could contribute towards the cost of this work. However recently, we have been
made aware of the Highways Act 1980, section 43, which prohibits a parish council
from spending money on any footpath that is not maintainable at public expense,
that is a private footpath such as the Trafalgar court slope. Mundesley Parish Council
will not therefore, be able to finance the reinstatement of the Trafalgar court slope.
Please visit our website for a full statement from our chairman including a quote
from this section of the highways act, along with links to NNDC’s engineering report.

Gold Park
After a recent inspection, some of the equipment
in the playground were deemed unsafe and was
subsequently removed to prevent accidents.
However, you need not worry, we have recently
ordered a brand new replacement structure to
take its place; new swing and see-saw seats and
fencing complete with self closing gates have also
been ordered to update our playground. We aim
to have all of these improvements completed
ahead of the Easter holiday.
A Short History of the Maritime Museum
The museum started life in 1928 as a coastguards lookout. This was closed in 1990
during the reorganisation of the coastguard service. The building was acquired by
NNDC who proceeded to refurbish the building. Mundesley Parish Council had the
building on a long lease until 2013 when we finally bought the freehold.
Accredited by the Arts Council England, the museum is thought to be one of the
smallest in England and features include local maritime, coastal and village history.
Displays include photographs, prints and equipment from the 1930/40s Each year,
the museum features a theme. Past themes have included: Mundesley’s railway
heritage; Royal Navy ships sunk off the Norfolk coast during WW2 and photographs
of the 2013 tidal surge.
Today, the first floor has been reinstated as a coastguard lookout, run by coastwatch.
Here you will find binoculars allowing visitors to watch passing ships.
The museum is open from the
beginning of May until mid-September
and is staffed entirely by volunteers.
We are always looking for more
volunteers, so if you feel you would like
to assist in the running of this
wonderful piece of Mundesley heritage
please contact the parish council.
