month. If you have an event that takes
place in the first half of the month - be
sure to get it in the month before.
An Extra Big Wow! Deanne and I went to see the Member’s
Exhibition at CCMA museum in Ontario and it was a terrific
treat. There were many good entries and our juror Dale Laitinen
was very thorough and professional in his judging. Thank you
to the Transporters who made everyone’s job easier. The
museum recently received a large donation from the City of Ontario and
concentrated their efforts on purchasing professional spotlighting. The new
lighting makes a huge difference and All of the paintings have come to life.
MVAL has been very fortunate to have a good relationship with CCMA and we
hope for our continued success. Please take a minute to introduce yourself to
Jenelle, the Museum Director; she is the artist who single handedly hung the
art pieces. A special thank you to Laurie Mangiagli for orchestrating many,
many tasks into one of the best Exhibits ever. Her team of helpers were exceptional and it all culminates on Sunday, April 12 with the Awards extravaganza
(I borrowed this word from Julie Crouch)…see you there. I am so very proud of
the Member’s Exhibit. You go, MVAL!!!
The Dale Laitinen Workshop was just wonderful and a sincere thank you goes
to JoAnn for doing a great job as Workshop Chair. What a marvelous teaching
we all received. Dale is a wonderful teacher who is consistently thorough and
a great artist. I viewed his DVD and it was just like being at the workshop all
over again…some of this good teaching has got to sink in sooner or later.
The Mid-Valley Arts League Slate of Officers for 2015-2016 is available and we
have a few vacancies yet to fill. The slate is measuring up to be a great group,
which will make us all proud. If you feel like you want to be contributing more
of your talents while meeting wonderful people, please let me know.
Remember, ‘many hands make light work’. For example: There were six persons
taking in art at the members exhibit and they were all very busy. Thank you to
those members who answered yes, when asked to take a leadership position.
A special thank you to those who consistently answer yes, over and over again.
At last notice, Mark Wood said he had 10 artists confirmed for Saturday in the
Park with the Masters. The event will be at Maranatha High School in Pasadena
again this year; this is an excellent setting. It is like going on a small vacation to
art-land, like Disneyland, but better. See you there on Saturday, April 25th. Sign
up now and save $5.
Speaking of saving, get your raffle tickets ready for our big Scholarship
Extravaganza in June. There will also be a Silent Auction of a Milford Zornes art
piece, which was donated by Hal and Maria Baker. Maria is Milford’s daughter.

MARCH DEMONSTRATION
Chris Van Winkle
Chris Van Winkle is a California artist with roots in Canada.
His art studies include Ontario College of Art, Toronto;
Citrus College, Glendora, CA; and the Art Center College of
Design, Los Angeles, California. He has studied extensively
with Robert Hallett and with the legendary Milford Zornes.
He has studied further with Robert E. Wood, Frank Webb,
George James and Henry Fukuhara.
Chris taught watercolor at Citrus College for over 21 years.
He has conducted workshops in California, traveled and
painted throughout the United States and Canada, and has
led painting trips to Spain, Holland, Britain, Middle Europe
and Russia.
He is an award-winning artist in both the National
Watercolor Society and Watercolor West, and is a signature
member of the National Watercolor Society, Watercolor
West, the Transparent Watercolor Society of America and
the Whiskey Painters of America. Chris has served several
years on the board of the National Watercolor Society, and
as president for three years.
He has mounted eight one-man shows. Chris has juried
many shows including the Nevada Watercolor Society, the
South Bay Watercolor Society, San Gabriel Fine Arts, Watercolor West and the Arizona Watercolor Association. He
has taught Yosemite and Sequoia workshops for the past
25 years. Chris was selected as one of the “top twenty” art
instructors by Watercolor Magazine.

Pete Morris is displaying his paintings currently at the
Temple City Community Center Gallery at Live Oak Park until
the end of April.

JoAnn Formia’s painting “ Fun at the Fair” was accepted into
the American Watercolor Society 148th Annual
International Exhibition. The Exhibition is held at the
Salmagundi Club, 47 Fifth Avenue, New York City, April 6
- April 25, 2015.

Joyce Nunamaker is showing and selling her craftwork at
The Original Renaissance Pleasure Faire
Weekends, April 4th -May 17th. The booth is called “The
Ortfaerie” and is across from the Fairy Glade (booth address
402). You can check out “The Ortfaerie” on Facebook.
If you attend the faire this year, be sure to stop by! (Joyce
and Fred McCall are still performing at faire with their respective bands)

SCHOLARSHIP
New Prizes Donated
In the past month, many unusual prizes have been donated.
They include two Julian brand easels—winning an easel is
an inexpensive way to jump start a plein-air program for you
or a friend or grandchild; an additional table-top easel; a mat
cutter; and a set of four frame clamps for purists who like to
assemble their own frames.
Many fine watercolors have been received,
including paintings from Brayton, Bryant,
Hernandez, Lin (Fealing), Shiershke, Van Winkle,
Wood, Wright, and Zornes. They are shown below.
We will also have photographs of all the paintings
at the Scholarship table at the rear of the room.
Ticket Sales
To date, ticket sales have been slow. We suggest you avoid
the last minute rush by purchasing a few tickets each month
(this is also easier on the monthly budget). As always the
Scholarship Committee will be at the rear of the room to
accept donations and to sell June Raffle tickets.

Bring lunch or take a chance there will be a place to buy.
Meet at the designated location at 9:00am
and paint till 12:00.
At noon we gather for lunch and sharing of sketches and
paintings. After lunch is the critique/share.
The critiques are informative and instructional. In the event
of rain the paint-out will be canceled.
We have done our best to give accurate directions. Since we
are based in San Gabriel, our directions stem from there.
It is each person’s responsibility to carry a map, GPS, or
double check directions.

My paintings are about relationships.”
Helen is an art educator and painter who has worked with
the California Arts Project. She is a Signature Member
of SDWS and WFWS. She received her BA from Ball State
University.
She is joining MVAL for communication with other artists.

Take the Pasadena freeway to the Hill Street off ramp
continue past the main entrance to the next light make left
and left again on Broadway. Parking lots available meet in
the main square. For lunch meet at the Gold Gate Cafe $7.

Glendale, CA
Sheram paints in watercolor and would like to improve by
learning more at demos and workshops.
He is an attourney by profession. Art is his hobby and he
also enjoys caligraphy.
Some of his friends are members of MVAL and they recommended that he join.

Take the 210 freeway to the Baldwin Ave. off ramp go south
under freeway toward the Westfield Mall. Arboretum on the
right. bring lunch or buy lunch at the Peacock Cafe for the
critique.
Location: APRIL 30th - COLORADO STREET BRIDGE, PASADENA,
ARROYO AREA
Park in the vicinity of 420 Arroyo and Norwood. There is a
small park overlooking the Court of Appeals Building and
Colorado St. Bridge. This view is looking down into the arroyo. Bathrooms available down in the casting pond area.
Bring lunch.
Hill Street off ramp continue past the main entrance to the
next light make left and left again on Broadway. Parking lots
available meet in the main square. For lunch meet at the

MVAL CRIT GROUP
The MVAL CRIT GROUP is open to anyone who wants
an opportunity for growth and feedback as an artist.
Everyone is to bring at least one painting, complete
or nearly complete, to share and discuss in a friendly
constructive environment. Invite your artist friends.
Crit Night is on the SECOND WEDNESDAY of the month

Southern California artists are invited to the Eleventh
Annual “Saturday in the Park with the Masters”
to learn from and paint with some of this area’s
finest painters and instructors. Since Milford Zornes
was always an avid supporter of MVAL and this special
event, all proceeds are used in his memory to offer
art scholarships to dedicated art students and grants
to art departments of schools within the area.
Spend the day in the park. Bring water, lunch,
your sketchbook, a comfortable chair, and your
imagination. Move from venue to venue and learn
from each painter.

Directions
From the West on the Pasadena Freeway (110): Exit at
Orange Grove Blvd., go North (turn left) and proceed six
traffic lights to Green Street. Turn right onto Green Street,
go one block and turn right onto St. John Ave (one way
street going south). Go about half a block and park in the
underground parking structure on the right.
From the East on the Foothill Freeway (210): Exit at Orange
Grove Blvd. via the Ventura Freeway (134). Go South (turn
left) on Orange Grove, then turn left at the second traffic
light onto Green Street and turn right onto St. John Ave
(one way street going south). Go south half a block and park
in the underground parking structure on the right.
From the Ventura Freeway (134): Exit at Orange Grove
Blvd. and proceed straight onto Colorado Blvd. Turn right
at the first traffic light onto St. John Ave. Go south one
and one-half blocks and park in the underground parking
structure on the right.
From the north on the Foothill Freeway (210): Take the

Jan Wright and Joyce Nunamaker were recognized for their
many years of work on the board of MVAL with “Lifetime
Member” Awards.
ARTIST ALERT, ARTIST PLEA
Pasadena Rotary is holding Help Rotary Help Others fundraiser on May 21, at the Pasadena Museum of California
Art. I am responsible for acquiring paintings for sale at this
event. The artist will receive 60% of the sale and donate
40% to the fundraiser (a tax deduction).
If you are interested in participating in this worthy project,
please contact me for the details of dates for drop off and
pick up. Your participation will be greatly appreciated by
Rotary and the community philanthropy the club supports.

IN MEMORIAM
It is with sadness that we report that Mae Bartolo passed
away on March 27th. Mae was a watercolorist and had been
a member of MVAL since 2001.
