HELLHOLE OF TIN CELLS
School students Rajeswari S. K. and Ananth Ram had a
first-hand experience of a community living in tin-shed
houses in a kuppam of San Thome. These people are
waiting for the state to build new housing blocks.
On the ‘other’ side
of San Thome High
Road, lives a community
we rarely get to see or
meet.
This ‘other’ community lives in tin sheds
for some years now. A
few hundred of them.
In early May, some
of them came out on to
the middle of the busy,
main road, cried till
their throats went dry
and the local police
persuaded them to
abandon what was an
unlawful act.
Why did these protest?
We set out to find
out a week later.
We were headed
to Nocchikuppam, the
first fisherfolk’s colony
located beyond the Light
House. A busy, popular
fish market stands off
this service road here.
It was about
1.30 p.m. and we asked
for Maran, said to be a
local community leader.
He guided us to the
place where people who
were part of Nocchikuppam now lived in tin
sheds.
The tin sheds were
to be temporary shel-
ters; these people had had
to vacate their small apartments built by the state on
the shore since they were
in disrepair and had to be
demolished.
But it has been some time
since that happened and
the state had not even set
the foundation for the new
blocks.
From the service road,
we could see endless rows of
tin sheet houses, choc-a-bloc.
They ran from end to end,
tightly set.
Some residents looked at
us curiously, some uninterested.
But when we told them
that we were here to understand and report their condition, Prema, a woman who
must have been in her 50s
June 13 - 19, 2015
called us in.
The tin house must have
been 10ft by 10ft, tin sheet
for a roof that was padded
with waste material; the four
walls were similar and some,
padded further.
A cot, a chair, many boxes
and trunks and clothes
were dumped on one side of
this shed.
“The women sleep here,
the men sleep out on the
sands,” Prema told us.
Outside, the door, a
kutcha sewage line ran down
the rows of tin houses, flies
all over it.
“The public toilets are
down the road and we use
them but some people bathe
right here,” said Prema.
We went into Devi’s tin
house. We found the family
had created a space where
the women could have a quick
bath; the waste water flowed
into the kutcha drain.
“We pay 3 rupees every
time we have to use the public toilet,” Devi said.
For the five minutes we
spent inside Devi’s tin house,
we could feel the stifling
heat here.
There were power lines
to each house but Devi and
her neighbours said it would
fluctuate time and again.
“Many people sleep on the
beach..imagine our condition in summer,” said Devi’s
neighbour.
Children were at play on
the road and on the sands,
this being school holiday
time. But the women seemed
to have little privacy. One
woman said they would all
sleep inside in a row if it
rained.
Thankfully, there were
public drinking water taps
installed at many places so
this supply was in place.
The kitchen was a makeshift one, much of the cooking
done on a table top or on the
floor. Clothes were hung on
lines that ran across the
room, a sheet of cloth
served as a flimsy curtain
and often kids would pop
in and
out, freely.
At many places outside the row tin houses,
pits had been dug and all
the dirt water flowed into
them; many were overflowing and the stench
was strong for us, who are
not used to being inside
such colonies.
Here and there, bikes
and cycles were parked at
doorsteps.
As we visited the
space in another row of
houses, people were keen
to tell us about their painful lives.
“Write about all this...
we want the world to
know the kind of life we
are forced to lead,” said
one woman.
“We have complained
and protested many
times...nothing has progressed,” said another.
“Life is unbearable
when it rains...the houses
leak, said a third, showing us how the rain-water
dripped.
Traffic was dull on the
service road. Children
were still at play. Many
boats were parked on the
sands. Men stood around
potti-kadais, chatting.
A strong whiff of
salted fish blew across
as we retraced our path,
walking past the fish
market and alongside the
local police station.
The tin houses colony
of Nocchikuppam was like
a hell made up of tin cells.
When would the Slum
Clearance Board provide
salvation?

D ’ S O U Z A
Why am I interested in musicians who meet on a terrace
in T. Nagar to jam on a weekend and musicians who head to
BayLeaf to listen to some retro and classic rock music?
I ain’t looking for talent.
I am trying to see how musicians can put their heads together to
write songs on our city. And then put their hands to the instruments.
uthu artistes are doing a lot of this sort. ore after amil film
makers turned to them for inspiration, ideas and curation as more and
more films base their stories in asimedu and oyapuram.
It is that time of the year when a group of us start working on the
annual adras eek celebrations held to celebrate the founding of
this city of ours.
August 22 is Madras Day and our focus is on the August 16 to 23
period when we encourage everybody to host an event that celebrates
Madras that is Chennai.
This is perhaps the largest of its kind event that is voluntary,
informal and run from the grassroots. That it has remained so
is gratifying.
e are keen to seek out busy bodies and community heads who
are not yet in the Madras Week tentlla and are eager to kick off their
own events.
Last week, Srividya who works with city NGOs was encouraged
to plan a mela at a college campus which will star the city’s earliest
charities showcase their history, the work they do and put on sale
anything that people may want to buy or support.
ui master umanth aman hopes to curate a est App for the
City contest and is keen to get one big time company which will
not only offer a few great cash pri es but also spend on some promos
to get all our smart geeks to work for this contest.
I am hoping that Sumanth gets a warm call from a honcho
this weekend!
he neighborhood social histories idea which has taken some
root in Anna Nagar may well sprout in Pudupet. People who used
to live in the four streets that make the west one of this neighbor
hood of Egmore and still carry fond memories of street cricket, Saint
Anthony’s festival, Christmas parties and tiled houses are eager to put
old pictures, stories and records together.
So the call is going out to all of you who can curate an event that
is about your area, your community, your line of activity an event
that banks on the past and looks at the future. An event that makes
Madras what it is.
e t week, have to meet a school
and some fisher folk
leaders in oyapuram. o broach ideas, seek support, create venue
partners . . .

I erred in last week’s Jottings
chool is 10 years old.
Over one thousand people packed into the campus of Sri Velleswarar Temple on South Mada Street
on June 2 night to take part in the Thiru-kalyanam celebration as part of the brahmotsavam.
As the rituals progressed at the kalyana mahal in the temple premises, the crowd swelled and spilled
on to the busy road. Those present said that this was the grandest Thiru-kalyanam they had attended
at this temple lots and lots of flowers were used to decorate the lord and his consort, much like the
way it is done for the kalyanam at the panguni fest at Sri Kapali Temple, next door.

meal, but are directly
infused in to the meat

water is added to cook
the food - just the

the food. No-carb options are also available
for the health conscious.
The menu looks very simple - choose
your meat, your bread (burger or wrap or a
lettuce leaf for the health conscious), your
sauce. But, ask your server and he will tell
you that you can mix and match and have
more than 50 combinations using these
options. The staff is courteous and friendly

and also knowledgeable about the food
options.
The food arrived pretty quickly and
the platter looked big. We had ordered the
gourmet bun burger and the veggie wrap
with chilly peppery and original buttery
sauces. The food was tasty but we could
do justice to only about
half of it. The side of
fries was also delicious.
While there, you
might also want to sample their non-alcoholic
beer or wine! Brewed
fresh by Tovo itself. The
beer tasted more like
ginger ale, but it is a
very refreshing drink,
especially for the hot
weather.
Tovo has plans of
expansion soon - all over the country and
other countries too.
It is a new concept and it seems to have
found favor with a lot of young
people who also enjoy the pub like
atmosphere.
The restaurant is located
at 113 R. K. Salai (opposite Savera).

Why does state make life
miserable for old pensioners?
To compel senior citizens, many of whom are
above 70 years and not physically fit to appear in
person in the month of June, the peak summer time
to get our pension is being cruel.
When the pension is being credited in the bank
account directly by the treasury why not allow the
bank to certify the life certificate even though the
pension is drawn from the Saidapet treasury as in
my case.
I am 80 years old and not well. When our PM
is going all out to simplify things, why is TN government not making things easy for the pensioners.
Please have mercy on us. And allow the banks
to certify and accept their certificate.
- R. Chandrasekaran, Mandavelipakkam.
Punish bikers who use cellphones
High Court orders to punish violators of those
who do not wear helmets is most welcome. But
more dangerous than not wearing helmets is speaking on the mobile phones while driving, particularly motorists and pillion riders. Police should
strictly fine the persons driving vehicles while
using cell-phones.

Broadcast special temple events
in Mylapore in full
Mylapore Times posted a video clip of Sukra
The saying goes that behind every successful
man there is a woman.
Having been associated with M P Anandh Matriculation Higher Secondary School in Mylapore
as a parent for almost 5+ years now, I say
confidently say that behind every good school is
a caring Principal and dedicated hard working
teachers.
I was one among those frustrated parents who
have experienced schools with utmost negative
psychology, pushing students and parents to the
core, for the school’s results; Schools which admit
and nurture only high IQ – high scoring students,
so they obtain the top ranks.
We were thrashed on all sides when my
husband and I decided to shift my child from a
CBSE (very reputed school in Mylapore) to a
Matriculation school.
We went ahead with our decision to shift
school since rather than being educated, we wanted
our child to be psychologically healthy. After five
full years, we are happy we shifted school and
particularly to M P Aanandh School, which has
values, quality and humans with vision.
Anyone can drive a car. It takes someone
special to drive a school bus. Amudha Aanandh,
the Principal of M P Aanandh School, is very
unassuming, down to earth and easily
approachable.

at M. P. Anandh School)
Relaid roads have rough edges,
can cause accidents
Kudos to Chennai Corporation for the new
black-tar topping of bus route roads In
R. A. Puram / Mandaveli. But the roads’ edges are
left sharp leading to skidding of motor cycles. One
aged woman tripped while trying to escape from
being hit by a motor cyclist who went off the
jagged road edge.
Will the Corporation engineers of this zone
look into this serious issue and smoothen the edges
of the relaid roads .
Poor state of pavements
This is with reference to your report on the
plight of pedestrians on P. S. Sivasamy Salai. All
the footpaths, in and around Mylapore are either
occupied by hawkers / shop owners to display
their wares, or in a bad condition.
This makes it a herculean task to walk on
the footpaths.

Can we re-use wells?
As in other parts of the city, Mylapore suffers
from water scarcity. There are many open wells in
some residences, but the water in many of them is
not potable.
The wells with good water resource are not
being used. Can Chennai Corporation activate
these wells so the water can be used locally?

Ananya’s arangetram
Ananya Sivanandaraaj had her
Bharatanatyam arangetram on June 7 at
the mini hall of The Music Academy. She is
a sishya of Chitra Visweswaran.
Her family has long had an abiding
interest in Indian dance and music - her
maternal grandfather, the late D. Devanathan was a connoisseur of the arts, and he
spent many evenings at the sabhas. His
daughter, Srividya Devanathan, learnt
Bharatanatyam, under guru Chitra Visweswaran. This tradition is now being carried forward into the third generation by
Ananya, who trains under her mother’s guru.
Ananya, who is 14 years old, is also learning Carnatic
music. She is a Class 10 student at Vidya Mandir.
She is also an athlete, having won many medals in
inter-school and intra-school tournaments.

HAWKERS ON MARINA ORDERED TO OPERATE
FROM ROW ARRANGEMENT ON BEACH
Hawkers selling snacks
and offering entertainment
on Marina beach have been
ordered to do business from
select places only. The formation came into being last
weekend as civic officials
and local police asked the
hawkers to locate themselves in a few rows that
run east-west from the inner
road side to the water front.
Such an arrangement
may create a better beach
atmosphere and help regulate the proliferation
of stalls on the Marina.
Now stalls are seen in the
new order from the Light
House end to the Gandhi
statue end.
There have been pleas in
the past to remove all
hawkers or get them to
designated spaces and also
limit their number.
Such an arrangement
was made at Elliots Beach
in Besant Nagar recently
and it seems to be
working well.
