I would recommend it strongly and urge you to watch it before it is taken off the city screens. The music of jazz, the drama, the passion, the heat makes this a film a movie buff cannot miss. There is a lot about jazz that can impact your body and mind. In our city, we rarely get bands playing it. I recall our Anglo-Indian musicians jamming on jazz after they did their acts at the weekend entertainment at Hotel Shiraz in Egmore. You get to listen to strains of it in our vintage Tamil films too - scored in an era when Anglo-Indian and Goan musicians packed into our recording studios in Vadapalani and Arcot Road. Mridangam artiste Umayalpuram Mali has been telling me that he is keen to know more about these musicians and their music. Many are either dead or have moved out of the city. In the early 80s, there used to be a restaurant in the shopping arcade opposite AVM Rajeswari Kalyana Mandapam on Dr. Radhakrishnan Salai which hosted live jazz shows for diners, on the weekend. The promoter was a hardcore jazz rasika and even though the patronage was thin, he persisted with the live music till his patience hit a low note. More recently, the new director of the GoetheInstitut has been keen to host jazz shows and is eager to locate bands in the city and in Bangalore and Goa to invite them to his theatre. Events promoter Eddie says he is preparing to host the second edition of the Jazz Fest in our city but first, he has to grapple with sponsorship and hospitality issues. I wonder if it will be possible to coax a city restaurant to spare its space once a month to a night of jazz. Live music has been forced out by DJs and much of the latter seems to sound the same. Perhaps the jazz music rasika community of Chennai can make things happen. Whiplash! MYLAPORE TIMES 12 MYLAPORE TIMES Feb 28 - Mar 6, 2015 Low key celebrations of Jayalalithaa’s birthday Celebrations of the birthday of AIADMK chief, J Jayalalithaa in the Mylapore neighborhood turned out to be very low key. The splash of party flags and buntings, the reams of large posters and banners which we usually get to see on such occasions were few and far between in various places we visited through the day. The one big show that the party unit hosted was held at the Corporation Wedding Hall in Alwarpet where scores of men and women were given veshtis and saris and a few seniors were given cycles. Mayana Kollai ritual celebrated in Mylapore carries on old tradition Report and photos by Madan If you wanted to be part of or look from afar at what is an ancient ritual that is still followed in the Mylapore neighborhood, then you should have been at the Mayana Kollai ritual in south R. A. Puram. Mayana Kollai falls a day after the Sivaratri celebration and is related to the worship of the Angala Parameswari goddess. Th day began with the creation out of mud of a giant, almost 20 feet tall image of the arakkar in the playground located off the Jesus Calls office on Dr. D G S Dhinakaran Road. In the old times, this ritual took place in or near a graveyard - it is said that lord Shiva sent Parvati to kill a demon who was located in a burial ground. In the R A Puram instance, communities from the Pattinapakkam area ( Foreshore Estate) organized this ritual in which, in the old times, the fiery goddess would raid the graves to locate the demon - it was, as oldtimers recall, a macabre ritual. That February 18 evening, the community gathered at the Amman temple on P S Kumaraswamy Raja Road ( alongside Andhra Mahila Sabha) and took out the procession of the amman. In the middle was a man who slowly went in a trance and seized a chicken that was given to him - he screwed it to death and feasted on its blood as it dripped down. All this took place as folk artistes played loud music and the procession headed to the local playground. Organisers said that since there was no local graveyard, they used the playground space to conduct the ritual. At the venue, the symbolic act that was very severe and raw in the old times was enacted. And the procession winded it way back to the temple. There is an Angala Parameswari temple also on Mundagakanni Amman Koil Street and the Mayana Kollai ritual was also followed here by another set of fishermen from the kuppams and colonies off San Thome High Road. The venue was the graveyard behind the Headquarters of the TN Police. There are four amman temples in this area and the Mundakakanni Amman Temple is the oldest. Clearly, a celebration of Mayana Kollai carries on traditions that have been followed for ages; from a time when there was no Madras and the dominant community on the seaside were the fishermen. Feb 28 - Mar 6, 2015 13 MYLAPORE TIMES concepts so well that we never felt the need to take care extra classes or tuitions after school”. Alumni member and retired CMD of Indian Bank, Chennai M. S. Sundarajan remembers the enthusiasm with which the students participated in competitions held at the school. The 1965 batch at their golden jubilee reunion with their spouses. Arrangements had been made to hand over a framed picture of the students along with a copy of the souvenir to the attendees. Donations were then presented. A single donation of Rs.58 lakhs was made by an alumni member K. V. Ramani, the CMD of Digital Holdings Pvt. Ltd, Chennai. This was followed by a contribution of about Rs.7 lakhs by P. Balakrishnan CEO of WALKING DOWN MEMORY LANE The 1965 batch of students of P. S. High School met recently. Emotions ran high. And they made a big donation to their alma mater. Whatsapp group and putting it out on Facebook”. Several meetings were organised and very often the meetings and talks about old times went hand in hand. Ganesh who retired from Abbott India, says, “We would get together quite often to plan the agenda for the alumni meet. Minute details were thought of and worked out. We also had a lot of fun talking about life at the school.” What does he remember best? “ I still remember this incident . . .At that time, going to Mount Road from Mylapore was considered taboo. Along with two of my friends, I decided to go to Mount Road to watch a movie on a Sunday morning. Three of my teachers had also come there to watch the movie and they were shocked to see me. I got so scared that I decided to bunk school the next day. When I went to school on Tuesday, I expected the worst but I was K. V. Ramani presenting the cheque reprimanded and let off with a warning!.” School was everything to these boys in the 60s. They would rush off to school at 9 a.m. (even though school started only at 10 a.m.) By Preeti Srivatsan 6th form (now class XI) picture of the 1965 ba and would stay on till 6 p.m and play in the school grounds. P. S. Senior Secondary School hadn’t come up then and they had almost 20 acres of empty space to run around and play. Ganesh says, “One thing I cannot forget are the weaving classes which were held at the school once a week our teacher would allow us to stay back after school and weave…and we would have so much fun”. Owning a cycle was a luxury in the 60s. Ganesh, who used to live at Narasimhapuram, says, “I got my cycle in the 3rd form (present 8th Std) and used to cycle to school even though I stayed close by. Traffic didn’t exist at that time and so I could cycle all the way from my home to the school without touching the handlebar - something we cannot even think of doing today”. R. Sadasivam, another alumni, fondly remembers his headmaster R. Narasimhachari, English teacher Ramaswami Iyer, math professor K. N. Jayaraman and sports master S. Venkataraman. This retired auditor who has used to live in N. M. K. Mudali Street, Mylapore says “Our teachers understood and explained the tch Sundarajan, who has been a resident of Mylapore all his life, says,”Debates, slokas, essay, Thirukkural, music and several other competitions were held in every class towards the end of the year. All of us looked really forward to this event”. The Founders Day event on campus on Feb 15 started with breakfast followed by a photo session of the students of the 1965 batch along “ India Anglo American Plc based at New Delhi. The rest was donated by the other alumni. This was an alumni meet which still generates a buzz among the 1965 batch. P. S. School has made it a tradition to encourage a golden jubilee alumni meet every February. The 1966 batch will now have to get into excitement mode. “Our teachers never demanded respect, they commanded it. They were kind, yet disciplined and this balance helped us reach great heights”. - R. Sadasivam. “Prayer sessions at that time were so organised. After the morning prayers, we would quietly and slowly go from the prayer hall to our classrooms - like ants in a line” - M. S. Sundarajan. “Out of 300 students, we managed to locate about 90 and 70 of them attended the meet with their spouses. We had members coming in from as far as U. S. A., Indonesia and Singapore”. “ So what happens when a group of ‘boys’ meet after 50 years… amidst tears and hugs, they make a huge donation of more than 70 lakh rupees to their school… and that’s not all…they honour seven of their teachers with Rs.10,000 each, a shirt and a dhothi. The class of 1965 left no stone unturned to ensure that their Feb 15 meet was a grand success. Over six months of 2014, they meticulously planned this event. Ganesh Rajagopal, who passed out in 1965 says, ‘We first wanted to find out how many students lived in Mylapore and so we decided to place an advert in Mylapore Times. Gas price issues; on subsidy I received our supply of Indane Gas from South Madras Gas Agency in January and February. In January, the cost of a cylinder gas was Rs 705, in Feb. it was Rs 600. While the price reduction (due to crude import cost gains) is welcomed, it was a surprise to see subsidy credited to bank account reduced from Rs 300 in Jan. to Rs 195 in February. Obviously the benefit of price reduction is not passed on to customers and taken away in the form of reduction in subsidy by govt. / oil cos. Why bleed the lower and middle classes? - C. S. Chandrasekaran, West Circular Road, Mandaveli. Involve citizens in traffic management Traffic violations have become a big headache in Mylapore. There are many minor accidents and brushes. The local Traffic Police have no time to curtail the menace. The solution would be to recruit retired senior citizens, give them camera and a GPS activated unit and go after the offenders. - Satish Bantwal, Papanasam Sivan Salai, San Thome. Kesavaperumalpuram forced to live with mosquitos Of late, there is acute mosquito menace in Kesavaperumalpuram on Greenways Road. Netlon screens, mosquito bats and trappers are of no use and the residents of this area are put to severe hardship. As soon as dusk sets in, you can see smoke emanating from bonfires of twigs and dry leaves lit by watchmen to ward themselves off the swarming mosquitos. Chennai Corporation does not seem to have taken any serious steps to curb this menace and health hazard in this area. The stinking Buckingham Canal behind this locality is the main source of this menace. Sweeping of streets and platforms and garbage clearance is not satisfactory. There is no trace of preventive measures like periodical fogging and spraying of the streets with mosquito control chemicals, etc. May we expect the Chennai Corporations to initiate suitable action urgently to control this menace ? - V. Gopalan, Kesavaperumalpuram Managing mada streets; suggestions The following suggestions can be implemented immediately on South Mada Street / mada streets.? 1. Shops have occupied the platform on both sides of the street. Remove their stuff. Ramps have been provided in front of the flats for free movement of vehicles. Demolish them. 2. The hawkers may be allowed to carry on their business only on the northern side of the street. Not on the south side. 3. Parking of two-wheelers alone to be allowed on the southern side of the street. 4. West Chitrakulam Steet is meant for vegetable vendors only but others are allowed to carry on their business. They must be evicted. 5. The mada streets can be made ‘one way’. 6. The waste can be collected on a daily basis - educate the hawkers. 7. For a month or two, the system should be effectivly followed by the Corporation and supported by local police. - S. Krishnamurthi, K. P. Koil South St., Mylapore. Ramaswamy Road, Alwarpet. All the foodstuff here is from the popular A-1 Chips store at Coimbatore. Run by M. Kannan and T. Karthikeyan, this store stocks a variety of chips and savouries. Karthikeyan says, “We would visit Coimbatore quite often and once on those visits we were very impressed with the snacks sold at A-1 Chips.” The idea was translated soon thereafter. Specialities include round tapoica chips, nendranga chips and peanut and jaggery barfi. They also stock different kinds of mixture, cheese balls, popcorn, kara boondi, onion rings, black and white sesame balls, and masala groundnut balls. Karthikeyan says, “All the products sold here are factory made and sealed in air tight packets thereby ensuring a long shelf life. The unique packing helps retain the crunchiness.” Future plans? “We plan to open a website soon and hope to introduce door delivery.” At 25, 3rd Cross Street, C. P. Ramaswamy Road, R. A. Puram. Today, loyal customers drop in here to choose from 16 different kinds of chips. Owner E. K. Kasilingam, a retired chemistry professor, has been running this business for quite some time. He says, “I had a provision store called Kasi Provision Stores and a flour mill at the same location earlier. About 15 years ago, I switched over to this business.” He says the chips are prepared everyday using pure sunflower oil which is not reused later. The peeling and slicing of potatoes or bananas are done by machines to ensure freshness. There are five different kinds of potato chips in salt and chilli flavours, beetroot, yam, tapoica, bittergourd, kerala banana, carrot . . . They also sell seven varieties of vadams, savouries like murukku, thattai and samosas and puffs which are made fresh everyday. Those on the go can pick up the readyto-eat home-made aloo, pudina, methi and plain parathas at the store - made by housewives and supplied daily.
