In Nara Park in the ancient capital of Nara, there are about 1,100 wild Japanese deer. The period from mid-May to July is the birthing season. Mother deer can become quite aggressive about protecting their babies, and even attack people. Or, if a baby deer comes into contact with humans, the mother deer may reject it. In order to avoid trouble between people and the deer,the organization in charge of protecting deer in Nara called the ”Foundation for the Protection of Deer in Nara ” keeps about 200 of the parks expecting mother deer temporarily in the “Rokuen” shelter. From June 1st to 30th, the foundation opens the shelter to the public so that visitors may see the adorable fawns born in the shelter. Last year, there were visitors who were present for themoment of deerʼs birth. Maybe there will be lucky people this year, too. ※According to the research conducted on July 15th and 16th, 2013, there are 1,094 deerin Nara Park and 299 in the Rokuen shelter, in total there are 1,362. There are 713 female deer, 190 male deer and 173 fawns. Dos and donʼts for deer -If you find a baby deer outside Rokuen(the deerʼs shelter) in Nara Park, please never attempt to get close to or touch it. When a baby deer is born, it is hidden in the bush or in other places for a couple of weeks. To protect the fawn, the mother deer may attack people who are just passing by. Please be careful. -No littering Deer eat any discarded items, thinking it may be food. -Deer in Nara Park are wild animals that feed on grass and nuts. They can eat shika senbei(deer crackers), but if they eat other foods, they may become ill. Please do not give them any food other than shika senbei. FAQʼs Q:When are baby deer born?
