Staff Happenings Special Thanks Jacks Of All Trades, Masters Of All I t’s oft-said that the most valuable employee at Nashua Children’s Home is our Cook. The food preparation for up to 46 hungry boys and girls within the Residential Program, 30 students in our School and all of the staff associated with these youngsters has always been a one-person operation, with a bit of help from kids. Record-Setting Contribution L ong-time Nashua Children’s Home supporter and advocate John Carter made a contribution of $68,000 to Nashua Children’s Home in November. This gift represents the largest non-foundation contribution in the 112-year history of Nashua Children’s Home. Mr. Carter, a Nashua architect and charitable benefactor, held a prominent role in various Nashua Children’s Home projects over the years, including the siting of our Concord Street Girls’ Home in 1993. Mr. Carter continues to live in Nashua in his retirement. Unfortunately, our present Cook took a spill at home and suffered an injury which has kept her out of work for an extended period. In her absence we’ve leaned on existing support staff, namely our crackerjack maintenance men and housekeepers to keep the pots and kettles fired up in our kitchen. The maintenance staff of Jeff Parent and Jim Foley along with housekeepers Donna Ouellette and Pat Lynch continue to do yeoman’s work in tending to the appetites of Nashua Children’s Home youth and staff. Keep in mind From left: Jeff Parent, Pat Lynch, as well, that their subbing in the kitchen commenced during the challenging weeks of winter Donna Ouellette, Jim Foley when all maintenance crews had more than their share of work simply tending to snow removal. Other staff pitched in as well, trying their hand in the kitchen. Most notable among these was Bookkeeper Mary Annicchiarico who prepared her mother-in-law’s Stuffed Pepper recipe. Thanks to this multi-talented foursome, and a few extras, no one at Nashua Children’s Home has gone hungry during our Cook’s absence. Volunteer Spotlight Shefali Kalyani & We Care Charity A n ongoing and welcome respite from the meal preparation of our Residential Counselors on weekends has been the delicious offerings of We Care Charity (www.wecarecharity.org), founded and led by Shefali Kalyani. Shefali and her crew, for a number of years, have made the trip to Nashua Children’s Home two Saturdays per month and prepared delightful meals for kids and staff. They also whipped up a special weeknight spaghetti and meatball dinner during our Cook’s absence. A favorite among the boys and girls, Shefali and company also make sure that every youngster’s birthday is recognized with a cake and prepare a favored meal when one of their Saturdays falls close to a birthday. And then, there’s the special events sponsored by We Care Charity, such as their commissioning an ice cream truck to visit Nashua Children’s Home last summer. Now a constant at Nashua Children’s Home, We Care Charity maintains a similar presence at Dover Children’s Home, Chase Home for Children in Portsmouth as well as the respective Soup Kitchens of Nashua and Portsmouth. They also send regular donations of clothing to needy children in India. Mark Your Calendars! S ince 1903, through two primary locations and three different names, the organization that was founded as Nashua Protestant Orphanage Association, now Nashua Children’s Home, has taken in scores of young people, sadly unable to remain with their families. Many of these children and youth have experienced more heartbreak, rejection and abandonment at very tender ages than most of us will experience over the course of a lifetime. A significant component of our mission is to provide successful experiences for youth, success that will inform productive adult lives. Toward this end, much of our effort is centered around simply bringing a smile to the faces of our young charges.
