REFLECTING ON GOD’S WORD
REFLEXIONEMOS SOBRE
LA PALABRA DE DIOS
As a nation, we are a mobile people. Not only do we
travel around during vacations, for special events, and for
visiting family and friends, but we readily move from one
place to another for college, work, health reasons, and
finally retirement. While previous generations usually
stayed with one job and in one house for practically all of
their lives, today it is common to move from one place to
another, to a different state or even to a different country.
This mobility carries over into our relationships. We can
find that our lives take us from one set of friends to
another, from one close relationship to another.
y aun a otro país. Esta movilidad afecta nuestras relaciones
llevándonos de un grupo de amigos hacia otro, de una relación
íntima hacia otra.
So Jesus’ admonition to remain in his love can sound
quite challenging to people whose lives are characterized
by change and impermanence. The word “remain” is
sometimes translated as “abide.” The meaning of this
invitation is to “take up permanent residence.” Last week
Jesus called us to “remain” in his word; this week, to
“remain in my love” (John 15:9).
Jesus tells us how to do this (by keeping his
commandments), why we should do this (so that his joy
might be in us and our joy complete), what specifically we
should do (love one another as I have loved you, that is,
by laying down my life for you), and what is to be gained
by doing this (an ongoing friendship with him that bears
fruit and gains whatever we ask the Father in his name).
Not a bad exchange for settling down . . . in his love.

. . en su amor.

LIVING GOD’S WORD
Sometimes we may feel that we are not even capable of loving as Jesus loved. In today’s
first reading we see that God is so eager to enter our hearts and enable us to love that the
Holy Spirit falls upon those listening, even though they have not yet been baptized.
Ask God to help you love as Jesus loves.

Mothers Love The Way Jesus Loves
In the liturgy of the Catholic Church, today is the Sixth Sunday of Easter. You and I are
also celebrating Mothers’ Day. Praying for them God’s special gift of joy.
In today’s gospel, Jesus promises the gift of joy to those who love the way he loves. It is
instinctive to a mother to love the way Jesus loves – giving one’s life to children and family.
The Lord and mothers put others’ needs above their own.
Grace builds on nature.
In the natural world,
A mother looks at her
life giving role as
her very identity,
her mission in life,
the purpose for which
she came into being.
2015 May Crowning Ceremony at The Nativity School
In the “Last Supper” prayer of Jesus proclaimed at Mass today, the Lord tells us that love is
his identity: “as the Father loves me so also I love you” (John 15:9-17.)
What a joy it is to hear God say to me and you “I love you.” In words and perhaps even
more in so many deeds, our mothers tell us “I love you” giving us the same joy God gives
them as mothers.
At the top of our prayer list today is to thank God for the gift of our mothers, living and
dead. At the same time, let us not neglect to pray God’s special blessings upon all mothers,
especially those whose pregnancy is causing them fear or shame.
I pray and invite you
to pray that all mothers open their hearts
to God’s own kind of love; love that always brings joy.
God bless you – Fr. Lawrence Purcell, Pastor

My mother was the most beautiful woman I ever saw. All I
am I owe to my mother. I attribute all my success in life to the
moral, intellectual, and physical education I received from her.

TODAY’S READINGS
First Reading — The gift of the Holy Spirit was poured out on
the Gentiles also (Acts 10:25-26, 34-35, 44-48).
Psalm — The Lord has revealed to the nations his saving power (Psalm 98).
Second Reading — God is love (1 John 4:7-10) or
1 John 4:11-16.
Gospel — No one has greater love than this: to lay down one’s life
for one’s friends (John 15:9-17) or John 17:11b-19.
The Call to Worship is taken from a longer Ave
Maria by the Franco-Flemish composer Josquin des
Prez (usually referred to simply as Josquin) born in
the 1450's in France, and considered by most to be
the first master of the high Renaissance style. He
served as a singer in the chapel of Rene Duke of
Anjou and at the court of Louis XI before going to
the Vatican to work first for Pope Innocent VII and
then the Borgia pope, Alexander VI. Later he served
Louis XII of France before his death in 1521. Hail,
Blessed Virgin, full of grace, Splendor of all the
human race, We honor you for Christ your Son, who
has for us redemption won.
The Offertory is The Greatest of These,
composed by the English composer Richard Lloyd,
born in 1933, noted for writing over five hundred
pieces during his career. The text of this one is by
Christopher Wordsworth (1807-1885) a nephew of
the Romantic poet William Wordsworth: Love is kind
and suffers long, love is meek and thinks no wrong,
love than death itself more strong; therefore, give us
love. Faith will vanish into sight, hope be emptied in
delight, Love in heaven will shine more bright,
therefore give us love. Faith and hope and love we
see, joining hand in hand agree, but the greatest of
the three, and the best, is love.
The Communion begins with an Ave Maria by the
Hungarian born composer Franz Liszt (1811-1886)
published in 1852 and included in a transcription for
solo piano in his Harmonies Poétiques et
Religieuses, one of his most personal and
confessional sets of piano pieces. Liszt became
renowned in Europe during the nineteenth century
for his virtuosic skill as a pianist, and left a huge
number of works for that instrument. He also
produced a great number of sacred and secular
choral works, as well as solo songs, orchestral
works and chamber music, totaling over 700 in all.
He counted Chopin, Schumann and Wagner among
his friends. Liszt retired to Rome in 1861, and joined
the Franciscan order in 1865 after which he was
known as the Abbe Liszt.
The second piece is A Prayer for Mothers by
Kathy Burdette, with music by Donna Butler: God
bless the mother, who sings to her child, peaceful
and calm, her words soft and mild. God bless the
mother, awake in the night, rocking her child 'til
morning light. Gather all mothers in tender embrace,
Grant them your courage, your wisdom and grace,
Honor their place in your sacred design, of healing
the world one child at a time.
