THE NATURE CAMP FOUNDATION 2014 ANNUAL REPORT
TheYearinReview
2014 saw the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Nature Camp Foundation. Through generous
financial and volunteer contributions, the Nature Camp Foundation (NCF) was able to provided $38,000 in
direct financial support to Nature Camp for capital equipment, materials used at Service Weekends, and
scholarships. Major purchases included the replacement of large kitchen equipment, a canteen freezer, and
an automatic external defibrillator to enhance camper safety. The NCF also provided the equivalent of
twelve full camper scholarships. Volunteer labor provided to Camp during three Service Weekends equaled
or exceeded the Foundation’s 2014 financial contribution to Camp. Over 130 individuals participated in one
or more Service Weekends. Principal Service Weekend projects comprised replacing the Girls T-House and
Educational Building roof sections, reinforcing floor joists, repairing siding on the library side of the
Educational Building, and improved drainage around buildings throughout Camp.
These contributions, combined with those of Garden Clubs and other generous scholarship
providers, ensure that youth from all backgrounds have a high quality, meaningful Nature Camp experience.
Of the 336 youth who came to Nature Camp in 2014, 157 (46.7%) received some form of financial
assistance. Additionally, Nature Camp tuition remains well below the national cost average of a two week
residential camp.1 At the same time, Nature Camp continues to offer a high quality experience, investing in
areas central to its mission. For example, Nature Camp has kept pace with the local food movement, over
63% of food dollars were spent on items grown, raised, or produced within 150 miles of Nature Camp.
In November 2013, the Nature Camp family lost Gus Deeds, one of its brightest stars. To celebrate
Gus’ life and the traits he embodied, the Nature Camp Foundation, in partnership with the Deeds family and
Nature Camp, Inc., established the Gus Deeds Memorial Fund to build an outdoor teaching pavilion and to
establish a scholarship in Gus’s name. The pavilion will fill a key need for covered classroom space, will
serve as a gathering spot for campers and counselors during recreational periods, and it will provide a
prominent and permanent reminder of Gus’s influence at Nature Camp. The scholarship will provide
opportunities for returning campers to receive much-needed financial assistance. By the end of 2014, the
NCF raised 72% of its $50,000 goal and completed site plans for the memorial pavilion. The pavilion is
slated for construction in April 2015 and the first memorial scholarship will be awarded in the summer of
2015.
Significant administrative activities were completed this year to ensure that the Nature Camp
Foundation has the needed systems in place to stay connected with the Nature Camp community and to
meet long term goals. The Nature Camp Foundation worked with Nature Camp, Inc. to establish new
business processes to ensure ongoing monitoring of facilities, facility maintenance, and funding. Using
depreciation schedules and financial reports, a thirty year facilities replacement schedule was developed to
assist in forecasting future expenses and fundraising needs. A grant process was implemented to facilitate
planning and to improve operations. The NCF Board now requests, reviews, and approves an annual grant
proposal from Nature Camp, Inc. which includes projected major expenses for the next three to five years.

THE NATURE CAMP FOUNDATION 2014 ANNUAL REPORT
The Nature Camp Foundation also invested in and set-up a new communications and fundraising
management software (Blackbaud eTapestry™) to support greater engagement of the Nature Camp family.
These systems will assist the Foundation in maintaining relationships with campers and their
families from their last year in first session to when their grandchildren come to Camp for the first time. As
part of this enhancement, we have increased electronic communications and provided the option for
members to opt out of print mail. We will build upon these refinements in the coming year and utilize them
to support Nature Camp in developing a long range financial plan for Camp and a corresponding
development plan for NCF.
A key tenet of our Foundation is building and supporting the Nature Camp community. Gatherings
throughout the year brought campers, families, and alumni together. On May 3, 2014, the Nature Camp
Foundation sponsored a celebration of the life of Gus Deeds at the Nature Camp Chapel with over a
hundred people in attendance. On May 17, 2014, we honored the service of Powell Hutton and his nine year
tenure as President of the NCF. The celebration commenced with toasts and dinner and ended with cake, ice
cream and a contra dance with dancers ranging in age from eight to eighty. In September 2014, we officially
celebrated the 25th Anniversary of the NCF with an Afterglow article by Katie Hoffman and an after-dinner
presentation at the fall Service Weekend by Nancy Lowry. Finally, we closed out the year with Fall Hike
Day which served as another wonderful, community-building event that raised funds for the NCF.
This work (and fun) would not be possible without the generous support of the Nature Camp
community. In 2014, 516 donors gave to the Nature Camp Foundation either through volunteer or financial
contributions: a 49% increase over 2013. Donations to the NCF amounted to over $105,000. NCF
investments continue to perform well. At year end, the Legacy Account, a fund supporting the long-term
operation and mission of Nature Camp, held $409,000, up $22,000 from a year earlier and a 24.6% gain
since 2012. The Scholarship Account, designed to provide a long-term source of financial assistance to
campers, totaled $79,000 at year end, and has enjoyed a 15.4% gain since 2012. The third and most active
NCF account is the Operating Account, closing out the year at near $75,000, and including $43,152
restricted to the Deeds and Craig funds.
Nature Camp also continues to be blessed with strong Nature Camp, Inc. and Nature Camp
Foundation leadership. Nature Camp, Inc. President, Amy Kasdorf Gonzalez and Executive Director of
Nature Camp, Flip Coulling, continue to provide dedicated, sound leadership to Nature Camp. At the
conclusion of 2014, Art Maguire, NCF Service Weekend Chair, Lucas Gillenwater, NCF At-Large Board
Member, and Mike Meads, Nature Camp, Inc. Treasurer, stepped down from their respective board
positions. We are grateful for their service. We are also delighted to welcome their 2015 replacements:
Corey Basham, NCF Service Weekend Chair, Graelyn Brashear, NCF At-Large Board Member, and Ben
Rottenborn, Nature Camp, Inc. Treasurer.
Respectfully,
Annie White, NCF President

SoundsI’llMiss
ByM.Keppel(SecondSession)
Ithinkthatforeverthesweettune
of “Thinking of Tomorrow” will be
impresseduponme.Itmighttakeawhile
to clear my ears from ringing after
singing“RiseandShine.”Anddon’tthink
that I’ll soon forget “Country Roads” or
“WagonWheel”either.ButthesoundsI’ll
miss the most are not those, but the
sounds of nature’s sweet harmony. At
night I will miss the sound of the
whippoorwill. In the morning I have to
search to hear the woodpeckers’ drum
andthespringpeepers’brass.Nocreek
rushes to greet me, bubbling and
laughing. No beautiful trees whistle to
me or sway in the breeze. There’s no
thicklayerofleavestoechothesoundsof
asnake.NolongercanIhearthemerry
Junebugorseetheiridescentdamselfly
everyday.Eventhefamiliarbuzzofthe
cicadas is missed. Together they sound
likeCamptome,ahomeI’llneverforget.
