An Integrated Solution
Offering World-Class Service
The ability to maintain levels of air traffic control service using remote tower solutions can provide
ANSPs with the flexibility they need to respond to budgetary and other operational pressures.
By integrating video surveillance technology and NAVCANsuite air traffic management products,
operators will also see increased levels of safety, efficiency and flexibility not found in a traditional
tower operation.
Our remote tower solution can be built to your requirements, using a tested collaborative process that
tailors our technology to your environment. We work closely with your team to custom-fit each
system to your operation, configuring hardware, customizing software, and developing new interfaces
adapted to your operational business processes. Choose to rely on our experienced system-integration
capabilities, or work jointly with our team of engineers, integrators, technical support and training
personnel. Whatever your approach, our team will work with your team to ensure a seamless integration.
An integrated information system ensures that all components are using the same data – minimizing
the controller’s workload, and increasing safety by eliminating the number of manual inputs.
This architecture also allows for the same data to be available at the local tower and at a
remote location.
The system can automatically detect and alert the controller to any unexpected movements
through warnings on the strips and on the surveillance display. Objects of interest are presented
on the video display at the touch of a strip or a radar target.
This integrated solution offers the following features:
• the ability to provide remote real-time surveillance of airport operations;
• remotely operated communications and airfield lighting;
• fully integrated airport control systems;
• a remote aviation weather observation system;
• view and control of multiple airports; and
• the ability to integrate or interface with third party systems installed at your site.

Advancing Current Methods
of Operations
Operational Systems in Use Today
Geographic location, low air traffic movements, fluctuations in traffic volume, and budget pressures
are only some of the many challenges that airports and Air Navigation Service Providers (ANSPs)
face with today’s tower-centric model. At NAVCANatm and Searidge Technologies, we recognize
this and can play an integral role by providing technology solutions that will advance your current
method of operation. When a traditional approach no longer makes sense, yet airport control is still
required, remote tower services may be the solution.

The Keys to Remote Tower Success: Flexibility, Scalability and Versatility
Our Remote Tower solutions are scalable and customizable options for providing airport control
services from geographically independent locations. Using the Searidge Technologies’ real-time
intelligent video platform, IntelliDARTM, combined with NAVCANatm’s fully integrated suite of
air traffic management tools, this is your go-to system for a safer, more flexible and economical
all-in-one remote tower solution.
Our Remote Tower solutions are designed to address the unique requirements of your airport
operations, layout, traffic levels and weather conditions by offering many benefits:
• improved levels of air traffic service at a lower cost;
• improved situational awareness in low-visibility conditions;
• a centralized, more streamlined service for multiple remote airfields;
• alternatives to new construction due to line-of-sight limitations;
• reduced capital expenditure requirements on new towers
– i.e. build at a lower height;
• greater staffing flexibility for existing towers;
• flexibility for planning and growth at larger airports; and
• making more efficient use of human and capital resources.
A Phased Approach
There are many factors that an ANSP must consider in order to successfully deploy and operate
a remote tower service, including developing operational concepts, determining procedural
and system requirements, planning controller training, identifying human-machine-interface
constraints, and obtaining regulatory certification.
In overcoming these challenges, adopting an evolutionary or phased approach may be the best
solution. A phased approach involves developing a roadmap where the ultimate goal is a full
remote operation, but with several intermediate steps. Each step would provide an immediate
benefit to the airport or ANSP, and would move the operation closer to full remote capability.
This phased approach to a remote tower solution addresses existing physical tower limitations
and provides immediate benefits, while laying a technological, procedural and regulatory
foundation for a complete remote control service.
A remote tower solution can be adapted for many applications, all of which can improve
safety, reduce costs and encourage interoperability. This is a viable and less expensive
alternative to building new tower facilities.
Remote towers can be ideally suited for:
Phase 1
Phase 2
Phase 3
• Runway blind-spots
• Line-of-sight limitations
• Contingency operations
• Temporary towers
• Replacement or retrofitting
of old towers
• C ontrol towers in geographically
isolated and under populated
locations
• Manning towers during low traffic
hours or seasons
A Customizable Solution
A remote tower solution can be completely customized to meet the operational needs of each
airport. Components may be added or subtracted to form a solution that best fits budget and
system requirements.
The most common configuration for the system is in single tower operations, and depending on
traffic volume, could include the following features:
Surveillance
• Searidge Intelligent Video, IntelliDAR™ and ATC-Grade Video
• Airport ground surveillance (radar, MLAT, and/or video)
• Area Surveillance (radar, MLAT, ADS-B)

NAVCANsuite Air Traffic Management System
NAVCANsuite is a fully customizable family of tower automation products providing fast and
reliable access to ATC information offered by NAVCANatm, and can be seamlessly integrated with
the Searidge intelligent video system. NAVCANsuite offers a more robust, improved information
toolkit which controllers can access for positive air traffic control and to make quick, safety-critical
decisions. It is designed to innovate and simplify the air traffic controllers’ workstation, and features
an integrated controller working position with up to four touch-screen monitors that provide
functionality such as electronic flight strips, situational displays for enroute, terminal and ground
surveillance, real-time operational data displays, and more.
Searidge Intelligent Video
The Searidge intelligent video platform IntelliDAR™ supports remote tower operations by
providing enhanced situational awareness to air traffic controllers. The system delivers real-time
ATC-grade video for visual confirmation of targets, radar-like coverage of all non-cooperative
targets and an out-the-window view by using video from cameras deployed parallel to each
other and “stitching” them together to provide a single panoramic view of an area. Intelligent
video helps controllers to effectively manage ground traffic with a high degree of confidence.
In some of the world’s largest and busiest airports, operations
are conducted without having full line-of-sight visibility of the
airport surface.
DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung, Germany’s ANSP, decided not
to build a new tower, as they had done for the Frankfurt and
Berlin Airport expansions, when Munich Airport announced
plans to construct a third runway at a distance of more than
four kilometeres from the current tower building. Instead,
DFS intends to use advanced video surface management to
augment their distant tower operation.
Malta Air Traffic Services is currently using intelligent video
to provide full situational awareness to its Apron Management
Unit, allowing them to safely and expeditiously manage traffic
throughout the apron area. This intelligent video system
includes a full suite of safety features to ensure controllers
are presented with the right information at the right time.
Intelligent video has also been commissioned at the Edmonton
International Airport in Canada. Combined with the advanced
surveillance and control capabilities of the fully integrated
NAVCANsuite of air traffic management tools, air traffic controllers
can use the intelligent video data to provide gap coverage on the
manoeuvring area. This system has met all the necessary safety
requirements for use in the air traffic control tower.
