Five Steps to a Memorable Event
1 REVIEW THE PLANNING GUIDE
Read through the Planning Guide to understand the
requirements and policies of the China Lake Course.
2 PICK A DATE
Choose a date, as soon as possible, that will suit
your participants.
3 REQUEST THE DATE
Contact the manager to request a date for
approval. Call 760-939-2990.
4 REVIEW OUTING PACKAGES/UPGRADES
Consider your goals and budget to help determine
which package is best for your event. Meet with the manager and fill out the event worksheet/
contract.
5 ORGANIZE
The purpose of this planning guide is to assist
Organizational Event Coordinators. Experience has proven
that organizational events allow for unit morale and team
building and are an excellent means to introduce military
personnel to the sport of golf. Many first time participants
gain sufficient interest to continue with the sport.
Golf courses have unique operational and maintenance
requirements associated with facility use by persons of
different skill levels. Those “first timers” or beginners
could easily impose upon other golfers without being
aware of it. To allow for maximum golfing pleasure but
also help prevent costly or irreparable damage, there are
some requirements we ask you to consider prior to
requesting approval for organizational golf tournaments.
A. Tournaments may not be used to raise funds for DoD/Civ. Private Lessons
Planning Guide
Make sure you have active, aggressive “recruiters”
for your event. Remember that the more golfers
you have, the more your operating budget will
be and the more fun everyone will have!
units or charities without approval of the
Commanding Officer of NAWS China Lake.
B. All food and beverages must be purchased through Dinning Services (Mulligans).
C. Tournament participation with less than 40 players does not warrant closure or partial closure of the
golf course for the event. However, groups with less than 40 players are still welcome and will be sent
out by tee times or management’s discretion.
D. Event Coordinators must accept responsibility for ensuring that those new to golf are aware of basic golf etiquette. This includes replacing divots,
repairing ball marks, keeping carts away from tees and greens, etc. To aid in providing this necessary information to participants, the coordinator or golf course staff will provide a briefing for all participants prior to teeing off. Please allow time for this briefing when planning the start time of your event.
E. Golf course dress code requires proper golf shoes or sneakers. Bare feet, sandals, and boots are
inappropriate. Shirts with collars are preferred.
Undergarment t-shirts are not acceptable. Shirtless is unacceptable. Tank tops, sleeveless, mesh,
halter tops, tube tops, and swim suit tops are
unacceptable. Trousers and shorts should be hemmed, no cut-offs or gym shorts.

Additional Considerations
Format your tournament as a team event. Pair
experienced golfers with beginners. When 75% of the
participants are beginners, you may wish to limit your
event to just 9 holes. Organize your event so that all
compete regardless of skill level by utilizing the
Stableford or Peoria Handicap system, or the most
popular SCRAMBLE format. The course manager can
help you select the right format. Encourage beginners to
seek the basics of golf through instruction and/or
visiting the driving range and practice areas prior to the
day of the event. Rain is a bad word for golf, but the
event will not be cancelled unless the course is
unplayable. The event and food & beverage must go on
if light or moderate rain exists. Postponing and/or rain
dates are a lose-lose situation for everyone.
Participation normally drops by 30-40%. The game
must go on with a shortened round if necessary.
Event requests must be submitted a minimum of
three weeks prior to the event to the China Lake Golf
Course manager. Any requests requiring approval
signatures should be completed before this time.
Management and staff of the China Lake Golf Course
await the opportunity to provide assistance in making
your golf event a memorable one! All players are
required to have base access. If there are players who
do not have access, the Pro Shop has the forms needed
to obtain access. Please allow 2 weeks for processing.
