Multi-platinum, Grammy Award-winning rap superstar, The music mogul has also left his mark in other aspects of the
entrepreneur, philanthropist, and actor, Nelly has continually
raised the bar for the entertainment industry since stepping on
the scene in 2000. In 2013, the St. Louis native released his
seventh full-length album, M.O. [Republic Records] featuring
guest appearances by Nicki Minaj, Pharrell, Future, T.I., and 2
Chainz and teaming up with production powerhouses, Rico Love
(Beyonce, Usher), Detail (Lil Wayne, T-Pain) and Pharrell (Jay Z,
Daft Punk, and Justin Timberlake).
Nelly entered into the spotlight with the release of Country
Grammar in 2000, spending seven weeks at #1 on the Billboard
Top 200 and spawning the massive hits “Ride Wit Me”, “Country
Grammar”, and “E.I.”. The album landed Nelly 4 Grammy Award
nominations and sold over 9 million copies worldwide. Nelly kept
the momentum going with the 2002 release of Nellyville. The

Upon Jackie’s diagnosis with leukemia, they aimed to educate and
spread awareness about the need for bone marrow and stem cell
transplant donations as well as attract more donors. His greatest
philanthropic achievement is that he hosted the largest African
American bone marrow drive to date. Sadly Donahue passed away
in 2005 but Nelly continues to use his influence to raise awareness.

Alice Mitchell 1940–2014
Alice Mitchell chaired and co-chaired Azalea Festival Committees for nine years. Alice was born in Buffalo, NY
on April 23, 1940. In July of 1964, she married her husband Tom and enjoyed over 50 years of marriage. Alice
worked as a travel agent, then joined a regional airline, Air Illinois, where she quickly moved up to the position of
Vice President of Marketing and Sales. She went on to teach travel and tourism, joined Rosenbluth International, then
moved to Wilmington with Tom after he retired. In Wilmington, she served two terms as president of Residents of Old
Wilmington (ROW). She was given the “Good Neighbor” award by ROW in 2009. She served as the Vice-President
of the Greater Wilmington Chamber of Commerce, and served a term as President of WDI. Along with being a chair
or co-chair for nine years for the Azalea Festival, she was on the Board of Directors of the Food Bank and served two
terms on the City Advisory Board for the Hannah Block Historic USO/Community Arts Center. She was a nominee
for the second annual Service Award given by city council to an individual providing outstanding service to the
community. Alice Mitchell died at home on Monday, October 20, 2014 with her husband, Tom, by her side.
William Hobbs Sutton
1925–2014
William Sutton was President of the North Carolina Azalea Festival in 1970. William was born June 23, 1925 in
Wilmington, NC. Mr. Sutton served his country in WWII in the US Coast Guard. He married Jean Anne Lambeth on
March 10th, 1951. They recently celebrated 63 years of marriage. Mr. Sutton graduated from UNC Chapel Hill with
a degree in Commerce. He was the owner and President of Sutton Council Furniture Company in Wilmington. Mr.
Sutton and his business received many accolades for his business and civic activities such as The Order of the Long
Leaf Pine. Williams Hobbs Sutton passed away Sunday, May 4, 2014 after a brief illness.
Evelyn Penney 1955–2014
Evelyn Penney handled the insurance for the Azalea Festival Evelyn was a lifelong resident of Wilmington and
worked for over 20 years with the Wilmington office of Arthur J. Gallagher & Co. (15 of those years with Walker
Taylor Agency before it merged with Arthur J. Gallagher & Co.). She was a lovely person, exceptionally caring,
conscientious and loyal. Evelyn handled some of the most important and complex insurance accounts of the agency
including the North Carolina Azalea Festival.
Staff and clients loved Evelyn like family and her extreme commitment to her company and clients will never be
forgotten by her work family. She is described by co-workers as almost superhuman in her dedication to her work.
Evelyn was a passionate gardener and spent much time cultivating camellias and azaleas. She was a kind and gentle
soul.

Music Stage. While bands are changing over, you can sit, relax and enjoy the colorful and exciting multicultural acts
performing on the Multicultural Stage.

Come enjoy Southern hospitality amid the vibrant color of azaleas and spring flowers during the
62nd Annual Cape Fear Garden Club Azalea Garden Tour© in the beautiful coastal community
of Wilmington, North Carolina. An official event of the North Carolina Azalea Festival, the tour
is one of the longest running and most popular garden tours in the South. The 2015 tour features
10 gardens (8 private gardens and 2 beautiful public gardens: Lower Cape Fear Hospice’s Heritage
Garden and historic Airlie Gardens). The private gardens are all new to the Cape Fear Azalea
Garden Tour© with a variety of styles from classic to modern and formal to whimsical, including
a published horticulturist’s delight as well as a trio of petite gardens. The variety of gardens on the
tour is certain to inspire every gardener.
The tour opens Friday April 10, 2015 at 10:00 am with the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at the
Hugh Morton Amphitheater at Greenfield Lake, 1941 Amphitheater Drive. The natural beauty of
Greenfield Lake is enhanced by more than one hundred Cape Fear Garden Club Azalea Garden
Belles© in their colorful antebellum dresses with escorts from the Citadel Summerall Guards. The
parade of the 2015 Azalea Belles is the highlight of this ceremony along with the introduction of
the Azalea Queen & North Carolina Azalea Festival celebrities and entourage. Following the
Ribbon Cutting, enjoy the reception at the adjacent Dr. Heber W. Johnson Rotary Garden. Parking
is at Legion Stadium, 2221 Carolina Beach Road with free bus shuttle service to Hugh Morton
Amphitheater.
The Cape Fear Garden Club© reinvests the proceeds from the Azalea Garden Tour
back into our community as beautification and horticultural grants, scholarships and
conservation efforts; including the Battery Island National Audubon Society wildlife
sanctuary. The Garden Club has supported the natural splendor of Wilmington with
more than $1.2 million in donations in the past 62 years.

Julia Dalton
Representing North Carolina at Miss USA has been a life-long dream for native Julia Dalton. This dream
became a goal after she graduated college and now it is reality!Julia graduated High Point University with
a bachelors degree in Exercise Science, served as the President of Kappa Delta sorority, a Resident Advisor
and a Supplementary Instructor in Statistics.In addition to modeling, performing and speaking, Julia plans
to combine her health and wellness expertise with the Miss North Carolina USA platform to educate and
inspire Americans to live long, vital and happy lives.
Jacqueline White Anderson
Beautiful and charming actress of the 40’s and 50’s, Jacqueline appeared in her first part for RKO performing a
sneeze for Zasu Pitts. Landing much larger roles as the leading lady in the classics “Crossfire,” and “The Narrow
Margin,” (widely acknowledged as a classic of “Film Noir”) in addition to more than a dozen more films. Mrs.
Jacqueline White Anderson was the very first North Carolina Azalea Festival Queen Azalea (1948), undoubtingly
setting the standard of class, grace, and elegance for the following decades of North Carolina Azalea Festival Queen
Azaleas and their Courts.
Dan Hampton
The New York Times bestselling author of Viper Pilot, Retired US Air Force Colonel Dan Hampton is one of
the most decorated fighter pilots since the Vietnam War. The recipient of a Purple Heart and four Distinguished
Flying Crosses with Valor, he rescued a surrounded US Marine unit from certain death, was the first plane over

Clyde Edgerton
Clyde Edgerton took up oil painting after discovering the art of local architect and artist Chip Hemingway. Plein air
landscapes are Edgerton’s forte, though he is also beginning to work with human faces, human form and abstraction.
His painting for the Azalea Festival will be unveiled Thursday, Oct. 16, at the Official Artwork debut sponsored by
Wilmington Health. The unveiling begins at 5:30 p.m. at the Terraces of Sir Tyler, 1826 Sir Tyler Drive.
“I’m honored to be this year’s Azalea Festival artist, especially in view of the fact that all sorts of excellent but
little-recognized artists perform and work in our community,” says Edgerton. “The mission of the Azalea Festival-to
showcase nationally the rich array of Wilmington’s art, gardens, history, and culture-is spot on. Within our borders
are communities and cultures that exist within a broader Southern culture of inclusion...art, gardens, history and
culture. The Azalea Festival will continue to bring our Wilmington communities together-to make things happen in
a big way.”
Beth Stovall
Beth Stovall is the twenty-one year old daughter of Dan and Patti Stovall from Goldsboro. Before winning the title
of Miss North Carolina, Beth was a student at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington majoring in vocal
performance. While at UNC-W Beth received the People Helping People Scholarship, was a Dean’s List student,
a member of the Honors College, Chamber Choir, Concert Choir, and served as a mentor. Most recently, Beth was
awarded a Non-Finalist Talent Award at the 2015 Miss America Pageant. Promoting her platform “Art and Soul”,
Beth hopes to inspire students to explore and discover theirtalents. Having collaborated with local arts councils
and schools, Beth plans to partner with the North Carolina Arts Council and schools statewide to help foster and
promote education, funding, and supportfor the arts in public schools.
Meg Caswell
A noted interior designer from Chicago Illinois, Meg is the winner of HGTV’s “Design Star” Season 6. After
obtaining a degree in Criminology, she changed course and went to design school. Following a successful interior
design career in Chicago, Meg now owns her own home store, “5th & Castle” in Wilmington, NC. Meg is the host
of her own HGTV hit show, “Meg’s Great Rooms,” and has also guest-hosted several programs for HGTV.

Casey Jennings
Casey is an American professional beach volleyball player. Graduating from Brigham Young University
with a B.A in Sociology, he also served as a member of the NCAA National Championship team in
1999. Casey competed in a long list of FIVB (international) and AVP (domestic) tournaments finishing
1st place seven times and won his first Manhattan Open tournament in 2013. Additionally, Casey was
awarded AVP most improved player in 2002, 2003, and AVP best defensive player in 2003.
Kerri Walsh Jennings
Three time Olympic Gold Medalist, Kerri currently holds the all-time record for career tournament
victories by a female beach volleyball player, with 113 career wins. She is the second volleyball player
in NCAA history to be named a four-time First-Team All-American. After graduating from Stanford in
2001, Kerri moved her game to the beach and partnered with Misty May-Treanor. The duo went on to
be considered the greatest beach volleyball team of all time, winning three straight Olympic gold medals
(2004, 2008, 2012). A long list of other notable accomplishments include AVP best offensive player of
the year (2003), two-time AVP MVP (2003, 2004), FIVB best offensive player and most outstanding
player (2007), two-time Sports Woman of the Year (2004, 2006) and three time world beach volleyball
champion (2003, 2005, 2007).
