The 2015 Azalea Festival Children’s Art Contest,now in its fifth
year, was the most successful contest in its young history. The contest was
kicked off in October 2014 with an invitation to elementary and middle
school aged students to participate. Students in grades K thru 8 had until
January 16, 2015 to demonstrate their creativity and submit their artwork.
Co-chairpersons Stephanie Kraybill and Miss Greater Wilmington 2010
Brooklyne Williamson coordinated the judging of the Children’s Art
Contest and were amazed and inspired by the incredible talent they saw.
This year there were 343 entries submitted from a record-breaking
20 public, private, charter, and home elementary and middle schools
across the state. Entries were received from individuals and schools from
Asheville to the Pamlico Sound, but predominantly from New Hanover
County. Artists were asked this year to title their artwork or provide an
artist’s statement. Even more creativity was evident.
The first place entry for the Elementary School category, titled,
“Celebrating the Beauty and Uniqueness of our State in the Spring,” is a
colored-pencil montage that highlights three of the most famous aspects
of the Azalea Festival: the Azalea, the Queen, and the Circus. It was
drawn by Becki Girolami, a 5th grade student at Parsley Elementary in
Wilmington, North Carolina. Becki says that Math and Science, and
especially studying animals, are her favorite subjects in school. Although
she only gets to have art class once per week, this is also a favorite
subject. She says her art teacher, Mrs. Suzanne Sload, makes art fun and
interesting. When not in school, Becki enjoys playing club volleyball and
hanging out with her friends and her two dogs Salty Bear and Ellie. Becki
likes to attend art camps in the summer, too. When asked from where the
inspiration for her art contest entry came, Becki answered, “First, from my
sister who was the first Azalea Festival Children’s Art Contest winner, but
really from Queen Azalea. The Azalea Festival is all about the Queen, so I

wanted to show her off in my artwork entry.” And show her off, she
did!
The first place entry for the Middle School category is an amazing
watercolor depiction of a single azalea flanked by two beautiful Cape
Fear Garden Club Azalea Belles who are keeping watch over a garden.
The winning Middle School artist is from outgoing 8th grader Max
Brinker of Cape Fear Center for Inquiry, also in Wilmington, North
Carolina. Max enjoys studying Math and Science, and dabbles in
studying Philosophy. In his spare time, Max likes to ride his bike and
his unicycle, a passion he shares with his father and grandfather. He
also spends time taking art lessons with Michael Van Hout at DREAMS
of Wilmington, playing his trumpet, jumping on his trampoline to
perfect his gymnastics moves, and hanging out with his friends. Max
thinks one day he might like to be a professional artist or an author,
perhaps following in the footsteps of the 2015 Azalea Festival Official
Artist Clyde Edgerton. He is on his way to this goal - another piece of
his original artwork will be featured in the movie “The Longest Ride”
which will be released on April 10th. When asked what inspired his
art work, he replied, “The azaleas and the belles are a central part of
the Azalea Festival, so I wanted the challenge to capture their beauty
on paper.” Like Becki, he certainly met that challenge head-on!

Celebrating Life
Through Art
Clyde Edgerton took up oil painting after discovering the art of
local architect and artist Chip Hemingway. Plein air landscapes
are Edgerton’s forte, though he is also beginning to work with
human faces, human form and abstraction.
His painting for the Azalea Festival will be unveiled Thursday,
Oct. 16, at the Official Artwork debut sponsored by Wilmington Health. The unveiling begins at 5:30 p.m. at the Terraces of
Sir Tyler, 1826 Sir Tyler Drive.
“I’m honored to be this year’s Azalea Festival artist, especially in view of the fact that all sorts of excellent but littlerecognized artists perform and work in our community,” says
Edgerton. “The mission of the Azalea Festival-to showcase
nationally the rich array of Wilmington’s art, gardens, history,
and culture-is spot on. Within our borders are communities
and cultures that exist within a broader Southern culture of inclusion...art, gardens, history and culture. The Azalea Festival
will continue to bring our Wilmington communities togetherto make things happen in a big way.”

three children, Nathaniel, Ridley, and Truma.
“Clyde is one of those rare individuals who can creatively do it all. I feel that as an
artist who is a writer, he tells a story within each of one of his paintings. The festival is so fortunate to have him as our featured artist,” says 2015 North Carolina
Azalea Festival President Liz Carroll.
Along with being an accomplished artist, Edgerton is wellknown for his illustrious literary career. He has published 10
novels, a memoir and a nonfiction book about fatherhood. He
is the Thomas S. Kenan III Distinguished Professor of Creative
Writing at UNCW, where he teaches fiction and nonfiction
