Therefore the radiant heat exchange in the space was heavily investigated and radiant balancing components such as radiant floors and ceilings have been investigated to see if the required conditions can be maintained. The air supply systems have been critically assessed to ensure the draft rating is not exceeded. The energy consumption of the different systems has also been assessed. The analysis of the performance of the space and its conditioning systems are described in this lecture. Peter is an ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer. Peter Simmonds Peter Simmonds has a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering and another in Research and Development from Reading Technical College, and a Master’s degree from HTS, Den Bosch, The Netherlands and a Ph.D. from T.U. Delft. He has been a member of ASHRAE since 1989. Dr. Simmonds is a recognized authority in the field of Radiant heating and cooling systems. The main goals of his research and applications have been to understand the heat transfer and performance of radiant systems for both heating and cooling. His studies related to thermal performance of these systems led to a unique way to enhance in these systems. Publications of his work led to the development of radiant systems in the USA and are included in the ASHRAE Handbooks. He has received the Carter Bronze Medal from the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers in 1993. He has authored or co-authored more than 60 technical papers, articles and books and currently is a Research Promotion Chair for the Southern California Chapter. He is a member of several ASHRAE Technical Committees. Peter also teaches Graduate and Post Graduate Architectural students at the Southern California Institute for Architects in Los Angeles. 4 www.nccashrae.org March 2015 National Capital Chapter – Capitalaire February Dinner Presentation Building Envelope Case Study Technology update on major architectural elements contributing to super insulating building shells, with particular emphasis on glazing and related day lighting advances. With our second turnout of over one hundred members this season, we are well on our way to completing our most highly attended season in recent memory. We also showed Society President Tom Phoenix, Region III Director and Regional Chair Paul Petrilli, and Assistant Secretary of the Army the Honorable Katherine Hammack the full dedication of our membership. I couldn’t have been prouder. Engineers Week was recently completed, and I’d like to thank all of the many NCC ASHRAE members who volunteered to participate in various events throughout the week. As always, Discover Engineering Family Day and the District of Columbia Council of Engineering and Architectural Societies (DCCEAS) Luncheon were highlights of this week of promoting engineering to future engineers in our area. Without your help, these events wouldn’t have been possible. This month’s meeting will be held March 18, and we have a great set of programs and speakers. Our PES topic is Radiant Systems for Occupant Comfort, and our speaker is Dr. Peter Simmonds, an ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer. Robert Clarke 6 will be presenting a Building Envelope Case Study at dinner. Sign up today and avoid late registration fees! We’re also opening registration for our annual NCC ASHRAE Golf Tournament this month. The event, to be held May 13 at Raspberry Falls, always fills up fast so don’t wait to register. Lastly, I’d like to ask you to take a minute to look forward to next year’s ASHRAE season. Our Board of Governors and Committee Chairs are currently beginning planning for next year, and we’re always looking for dedicated NCC ASHRAE members who would like to get involved. If you’re interested in volunteering please let me know, and I’d be happy to find you a spot on our team. Best regards, Andrew Rhodes President – National Capital Chapter 2014/2015 www.nccashrae.org March 2015 National Capital Chapter – Capitalaire Young Engineers of ASHRAE (YEA) ASHRAE is committed to advancing its programs and services for young members through helping them build their professional foundations. Their designs incorporate ASHRAE standards for effective energy management and IAQ. Performance is proven through one year's actual, verifiable operating data. As a chapter, we are proud to announce that Roger Chang with Westlake Reed Leskosky received the Region III Technology Award and continued on to receive First Place winner of an ASHRAE Technology Award in the Commercial Buildings – Existing Category for the Wayne N. Aspinall Federal Building and US Courthouse project in Grand Junction, Colorado. Roger will receive his award in Chicago in January, and his project will be featured in the March 2015 issue of the ASHRAE Journal. Congratulations, Roger! Technology Award Winners - 2015 Submission Schedule Chapter submission deadline: April 9 Regional submission deadline: May 15 Society submission deadline: September 1 Frequently Asked Questions: My project is still in construction; shall I submit the project to my Chapter or wait and submit after 1-year of utility data is obtained? If the entrant wishes to ultimately submit to the Society competition, then he/she should wait until they have all the necessary backup data and information in hand by the time of the Regional competition. First place winners of the Regional competition are eligible for advancement to the Society level and may not postpone their submission beyond the current competition cycle. Should I use the short form or long form for submission to the Regional competition? Society is encouraging the Regions to use the same standards in judging entries that apply to the Society level competition. Furthermore, if the entrant wishes to ultimately submit to the Society competition, there is only approximately 1 month between notification by the Region and the Society level deadline to prepare the necessary documents. For these reasons, entrants are encouraged to submit to the Region using the long form, although the short form will still be accepted. If you have any questions regarding Tech Awards or would like to obtain any additional information, please contact Omar Hawit at [email protected] . 13 www.nccashrae.org March 2015 National Capital Chapter – Capitalaire Student Outreach As a member of The National Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Education Coalition, ASHRAE is dedicated to ensuring quality STEM programs for teachers and students all around the world.
