The Mullet Wrapper May 2015 Volume 12 Issue 5 The Workboats of Core Sound with Lawrence Earley Third Tuesday Evening Adult Program May 19, 7–9 p.m. CALENDAR OF EVENTS May May 2: NatureFest May 19: Third Tuesday Evening Adult Program May 21: Knotheads May 30: Historic Southport Bike Tour Save the Dates June 13: “Scurvy Dogs & Scallywags: Pirates!” July 11: “We Are Tar Heels: The Naval Stores” August 8: “And Our Flag Was Still There” For generations, Harkers Island was isolated from the rest of North Carolina. Boating was the only means of transportation and the only available means for their livelihood. The wooden workboats of Core Sound are beautiful, functional art; the builders are artisans like no other. The names Rose, Willis, and Gaskill, are synonymous with the tradition of Down East boat building and their trade has been passed down within the island communities of Carteret County for decades. Join The North Carolina Maritime Museum at Southport as we welcome Lawrence Earley, the author of The Workboats of Core Sound. He will share the stories and images of the vibrant culture of the boat builders Down East. The program will be held at the Southport Community Building, 223 East Bay St., Southport. Program is free. Call the Museum at 910457-0003 to register. In fact, nestled in Carteret County between North River and Cedar Island are several water communities collectively known as Down East. The first bridge linking Down East to the mainland was constructed in the 1920s. Until then, the residents subsisted in the isolated maritime environment as fishermen, hunters and boat builders. For generations, places like Harkers Island, Otway, Marshallberg, and Straits have been synonymous with family names such as Mason, Rose, Gutherie and Willis. Authors have written of life along the Carteret County sounds and the watermen who plied those waters. Many more volumes have focused on the boat building heritage. Boat builder and modeler James Allen Rose of Harkers Island created diminutive representations of mail boats, skiffs, and shrimp trawlers. These works of art had a functional purpose for him. According to Rose, before an actual boat could be built, the builders Down East would craft a model. Author, photographer and speaker Lawrence S. Earley, has channeled Rose by creating his own work of art. “The Workboats of Core Sound” is page after page of maritime art through beautiful images and stories of the people who live Down East. Incorporating oral history and research, Earley has effectively conveyed the strength, fortitude, and rich heritage of Core Sound through his book.
