Communications Assistant
Term: May 25th, 2015 to August 28th, 2015
$13/hour for 35 hours per week
The Maritime Museum of BC is seeking a Communications Assistant to join the team at this exciting time
in the museum’s history. The Maritime Museum is currently in the process of moving to a new location.
MMBC will be a key cultural institution that shares BC’s coastal experience – both contemporary and
historical – with visitors and locals alike. It will welcome visitors to the west coast and will provide
opportunities for family-learning, skill-development including historical and ocean literacy, and
entertainment. The new MMBC will be a culturally relevant, community-supported, collaborative notfor-profit that is both self-sufficient and sustainable.
The Communications Assistant will work closely with the Operations Manager to ensure the Maritime
Museum of BC’s programs, fundraising efforts, and events are promoted effectively. The successful
candidate will gain valuable experience by contributing to the Maritime Museum’s community presence
and assisting with the communications for a fundraising campaign. The Communications Assistant will
develop their communication skills though media relations including writing press releases and working
with members of the media. The Assistant will also be responsible for managing social media assets
including Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and Trip Advisor for the Maritime Museum.
This is a Young Canada Works funded position, and applicants must be eligible to qualify for Young
Canada Works support as detailed under “Eligibility” below.
Duties will include:
 Website maintenance and design
o Writing and research of website text, blog posts, programs, and general museum
updates
 Crowd Funding Campaign Communications Plan
o Developing the communications strategy and managing the marketing materials for a
crowd funding campaign
 Photography and desktop publishing
o Photographing artifacts, programs and people around the Museum
o Designing communications materials such as posters
 Media relations
o Writing and distributing press releases
o Promotion of events and programs
 Social media management
o Maintaining and updating the Maritime Museum’s social media assets including
Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and Trip Advisor with a focus on engagement and online
community-building.
 Office Administration
o Researching information as required by the Operations Manager
o Tracking photography and media coverage
 Other communications tasks as assigned
Eligibility Requirements:
 are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada; Note: NonCanadian students holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent status are not eligible.
 are legally entitled to work in Canada;
 are between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment;
 meet the eligibility criteria of the program for which you are applying;
 are registered in the YCW on-line candidate inventory;
 are willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment;
 do not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week) while employed with YCW;
 have been a full-time student (as defined by your educational institution) in the semester
preceding the YCW job;
 intend to return to full-time studies in the semester following the YCW job.
Skills and Qualifications:
 Excellent writing and editing skills, with strong attention to detail
 Knowledge of key social media outlets
 Ability to balance multiple priorities on tight deadlines
 Knowledge of design principles
 Competency working with MS Office Suite, Adobe InDesign and Adobe Photoshop
 Ability to undertake detailed tasks and follow direction
 Ability to work independently or as part of a team
 Availability for weekday, weekend and evening shifts, as required
 Experience with and knowledge of crowd funding campaigns preferred, but not required
