Registration and Refund Policy:
Advance registration is required for all paid
programs. Call (252) 728-7317 or visit the
Museum. Reservations cannot be made via
e-mail and are confirmed only after payment
is processed. For group programs, call for
details and reservations.
Registration fees, less a 10% fee, are refunded
when the Museum receives cancellation notice at least two weeks
before the start of a program. There is no refund within two
weeks of the start of a program.
Field trips into coastal habitats may involve travel by boat or
van, and/or hiking or wading in shallow water. Closed-toe shoes
are required for safety on field trips.

National Estuaries Day
September 27
The Museum will host staff from the Rachel Carson
National Estuarine Research Reserve for a day of activities
dedicated to estuaries! Learn about “where the rivers
meet the sea,” and discover the importance of our coastal
waters. You can also participate in a trash clean-up of the
Reserve. For more information or to register for the trash

Hurricane Hazel 60th Anniversary
October 8, 7 p.m.
This special program will examine the impacts of Hurricane
Hazel, particularly in the area from Cape Fear to Cape
Lookout. John Cole, Warning Coordination Meteorologist
for the National Weather Service office in Newport, will
give an overview of the storm, followed by a presentation
by NC Maritime Museum Education Curator John Hairr,
author of The Great Hurricanes of North Carolina, who will
share historical details and images of the damage inflicted
by the storm. Free.
Fall In-the-Water Meet
October 18, 1 – 5:30 p.m.
Traditional Small Craft Association members gather at
Gallants Channel docks. All small boats are welcome. Free
boat rides for the public. Pig pickin’, 4 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.: $10,

Night at the Museum; Coastal Legends and Lore!
October 31, 6 – 8 p.m.
Visit the Museum for some of the sweetest treats and
exciting tricks of your Halloween evening. Museum staff and
the East Carteret High School Drama Club will bring to life
mysterious stories from up and down the coast. Intended
for families with children 12 and under, but all are welcome.
Suggested Donation: $4 Adults, $2 Children, proceeds help
support the East Carteret High School Drama Club.

Come to the Museum after school to learn about coastal
fish and recreational fishing! Learn how to fish with a cane
pole, best fishing practices and see what types of fish live
along the Beaufort waterfront. Space is limited, advance

Where are the Whalers?
Sept. 20, 3 p.m.
East Carolina University Masters Student Ryan Bradley
investigates the archeology and the historical and cultural
influences of whaling practices that occurred in North
Carolina. As part of the research involved with this thesis,
audience members are encouraged to bring in any family
photos, stories or artifacts to be shared and possibly
documented to help gain a better understanding of the
history of whaling along the North Carolina coast. Free.
Brown Bag Gam
Sept. 23, Oct. 9, Nov. 6, 13, 20 and Dec. 4, 11, 18; All times
at noon
Gam is defined as a friendly conversation between whalers
or to visit with another ship while at sea. Pack a lunch and
come learn about North Carolina’s rich coastal environment

C.M.M.S. exists to promote the production of high quality
ship models and encourage members and the public to
participate in this craft that is as old as shipbuilding itself.

Oil Pressure; Cetaceans in the Crosshairs of our
Search for Oil

From hunting whales to seismic exploration, our search for
oil in marine environments continues to involve whales in
some way or another. Join Museum Natural Science Curator
Keith Rittmaster for this after-hours presentation. Free.
Ports and Pilots
Nov. 19, Dec. 12, 1:30 – 4 p.m.
See the big ships up close and get a good look at some of
the exports and imports moving through the North Carolina
State Port facility in Morehead City. Fee includes video
presentation on harbor pilots and transportation to the
port. Not suitable for children under 12. Cut off for sign up
is one week prior to program date. Reservations: $5.*
Whales of the North Carolina Coast
Dec. 10, 7 p.m.
Targeted for oil or food, the whales of our world have
struggled for existence. Come learn about whales that
occur off North Carolina and some of the challenges these
protected species face today. Free.
