Registration and Refund Policy:
Advance registration is required for all paid programs. Call 252-728-7317 or visit the Museum.
Reservations cannot be made via e-mail and are confirmed only after payment is processed.
For group programs, call for details and reservations.
Registration costs, less a 10% fee, are refunded when the Museum receives cancellation notice
at least two weeks before the start of a program. There is no refund within two weeks of the
start of a program.
Field trips into coastal habitats may involve travel by boat or van, and/or hiking or wading in
shallow water. Closed-toe shoes are required for safety on field trips.

COASTAL CULTURE PROGRAMS
Coastal Culture and Waterfowl Watching Trip
Jan. 22 - 23
Observe the migration of wintering waterfowl at Wildlife
Refuges and National Seashores in Eastern North Carolina.
Learn about the unique history of our coastal communities
as well. Museum staff will lead you on a whirlwind tour
through the remote but beautiful regions of Pamlico, Hyde
and Dare Counties for this annual trip. This is an overnight
adventure and requires pre-registration. Reservations: $70*
Hotel reservations and meals not included.
Brown Bag Gam
Jan. 28, 31, Feb. 18, 25, March 11, 24,

Gam is defined as a friendly conversation between whalers
or to visit with another ship while at sea. Pack a lunch
and come have a gam with us about North Carolina’s rich
coastal environment and culture. For specific topics see
“Calendar at a Glance” (programs are listed after BBG).

Ports and Pilots
Feb. 4, March 4, 1:30 – 3:30 p.m.
See the big ships up close and get a good look at some
of the exports and imports moving through the North
Carolina State Port facility in Morehead City. Fee includes
video presentation on harbor pilots and transportation to
the port. Not suitable for children under 12. Cut off for sign
up is one week prior to program date. Reservations: $5*
Carolina Maritime Model Society
Jan. 31, Feb. 28, March 28, and April 25, 2 p.m.
C.M.M.S. exists to promote the production of high quality
ship models and encourage members and the public to
participate in this craft that is as old as shipbuilding itself.
All meetings are open to the public.
Shackleford Banks: Horses, Hiking and History
March 16, 9:45 a.m. – 1:45 p.m.
Experience Outer Banks heritage and wildlife during a
guided hike on this Cape Lookout National Seashore island.
Not suitable for children under 6. Reservations $30*
Exploring the Rachel Carson Reserve
April 17, 1 – 4 p.m.
Get up close and personal with some of the plants and
animals of the Rachel Carson Reserve National Estuarine
Research Site. A guided hike will take you through the
different habitats found on Town Marsh and Bird Shoal.
Not suitable for children under 6. Reservations $20*

ON THE WATER
Kayak through History
April 24, 1 – 4 pm
Learn about local history while on the water. Basic instruction
and safety lessons followed by a relaxing paddle through a
salt marsh. Ages 12 and up, under 18 must be accompanied
by an adult. Participants must know how to swim and some
kayak experience is recommended. Reservations $50*,
$30 with own kayak.
Sailing Lessons
By appointment only
Learn how to sail! Pick from traditional boat handling, adult
or family sailing lessons. Call (252)728-2762 for prices and
details; $40* - $240*.
Custom Kayak Trips
By appointment only
For groups of 4 to 8 people, ages 12 and up (under 18 must
be accompanied by an adult). Call for availability. Participants
must know how to swim. Reservations $60* per person.
CHILDREN'S PROGRAMS
Merry Time for Tots
Jan. 14, Feb. 11, March 11, April 8, 10 - 11 a.m.
Preschoolers (ages 2-5) and their caregivers take a unique
look at nautical topics & museum artifacts. Topics are “Pirate
Hooks and Peg Legs,” “Hatteras Jack,” “Boats that Float”
and “Shark Tales.” For dates of each topic see “Calendar at
a Glance.” Pre-registration is preferred. Free.
Kayaking for Kids
April 10, 1 - 3 p.m.
Instructions and safety lessons followed by a guided
paddle trip (not a very far one though!). For kids ages 8 -14.
Participants must know how to swim and be comfortable with
being on the water. Reservations $45*, $25 with own kayak.
SUMMER CAMPS
Junior Sailing Program and Summer Science School
Registration starts Feb. 16
Plan ahead for your child’s exciting summer! The Junior
Sailing Program uses the fun of sailing to teach seamanship,
navigation, boating safety and sailing techniques. Summer
Science School investigates the coastal environment and
North Carolina’s rich maritime history. No early registration;
spaces are not confirmed until payment is received. Course
schedules and registration information will be posted one
week prior to February 16.

North Carolina Science Festival
Vikings, Basques, and Whaling
in the Medieval North Atlantic
Feb. 12, 6 p.m.
At the intersection of the White Oak River and Bogue Inlet
lies an intriguing place known as Bear Island. At 900 acres it
is small, but its history and beautiful scenery are larger than
life. Camp, fish, or learn about the environment at this North
Carolina State Park. Come learn how it came to be preserved
for future generations. This evening program will be held at
the Museum and presented by Rachel Bisesi of the North
Carolina Coastal Federation. Free.
April 10-26, Statewide
A series of programs offered across the state to promote
various sciences and to have fun! This event was produced
by the University of North Carolina’s Morehead Planetarium
and Science Center and is sponsored by numerous corporate
organizations. For more information visit the website at

Crystal Coast Earth Day Festival
April 25, 10 – 2 p.m. at Fort Macon State Park
Hands-on activities and demonstrations to celebrate Earth
Day. Learn about the importance of a healthy environment. It
is free to the public and will be held at Ft. Macon State Park.
The Maritime Museum and North Carolina Marine Mammal
Stranding Network will both be present at the event.
Beaufort Wine & Food Weekend
April 22-26
A weekend of amazing food prepared by local chefs
and samplings of wine from around the world, proceeds
benefit the Friends of the Museum and the Beaufort

A cooking competition that benefits the Museum and
warms you up. Guests will taste and vote for their favorite

Jan. 30, 7 p.m.
Join us as Associate Professor of History Dr. Vicki Szabo
from Western Carolina University presents on North
Atlantic Right Whale populations and the methods used
to hunt them during the Viking Age through early modern
history. Dr. Szabo will include Icelandic sagas, laws and
early manuscript illuminations and illustrations in her
presentation. Free.
Heart of the Sea
Feb. 14, 1 p.m.
Come for a Valentine’s Day presentation about our
beloved whale Echo. Learn about putting together his
skeleton and preserving his heart. This presentation
covers the story of Bonehenge, a massive volunteer effort
that culminated with the skeletal display of a sperm whale
and its heart. Free.

Blackbeard’s Queen Anne’s Revenge Exhibit
Coming in early 2015
Since the grand opening of the Blackbeard’s
Queen Anne’s Revenge Exhibit in 2011 Museum
guests have enjoyed viewing artifacts from the flagship
of the famous pirate and learning about the work that
goes into the recovery and conservation of these priceless
treasures. Coming this year the exhibit will be unveiled
again with a new look and new
artifacts to be placed on display.

and check out artifacts being
conserved in our new Museum
