OUR DESIGN Veterans Upward Bound is designed to motivate and assist veterans in the development of academic and other requisite skills necessary for acceptance and success in a program of postsecondary education. The program provides assessment and enhancement of basic skills through counseling, mentoring, tutoring, and academic instruction in the core subject areas. The primary goal of the program is to increase the rate at which participants enroll in and complete postsecondary education programs. OUR SERVICES We hold the bar high to assist veterans in securing support services from other locally available resources such as the Veterans Administration, state veterans agencies, veteran associations, and other state and local agencies that serve veterans. Our core services include: • Programing designed to improve financial and economic literacy • Instruction in reading, writing, mathematics, and study skills • Workshops to facilitate success in education beyond high school • Personal counseling • Tutorial services • Mentoring programs • Information on postsecondary education opportunities • Assistance in completing college entrance and financial aid applications • College and Program Tours • Resume Development • Job Shadowing THE NEED IN 2012 OUR SERVICE AREA REPRESENTED 87,000 235 VETERANS SERVED BY ONE VA COORDINATOR No specific programs at the community college level in this market housed a program designed to assist veterans in the attainment of a post-secondary degree at the time of our award ($1.45M five-year grant). Emphasis is placed on analyzing, summarizing, reporting, and interpreting financial information. Upon completion, students should be able to prepare financial statements, understand the role of financial information in decision-making, and address ethical considerations. This course introduces the functions of personnel/human resource management within an organization. Topics include equal opportunity and the legal environment, recruitment and selection, performance appraisal, employee development, compensation planning, and employee relations. Upon completion, students should be able to anticipate and resolve human resource concerns. ACC 121 MKT 223 Principles of Managerial Accounting 3-2-4 Prerequisite: ACC 120 This course includes a greater emphasis on managerial and cost accounting skills. Emphasis is placed on managerial accounting concepts for external and internal analysis, reporting, and decision-making. Upon completion, students should be able to analyze and interpret transactions relating to managerial concepts including product-costing systems. Principles of Management 3-0-3 This course is designed to be an overview of the major functions of management. Emphasis is placed on planning, organizing, controlling, directing, and communicating. Upon completion, students should be able to work as contributing members of a team utilizing these functions of management. 3-0-3 This course stresses the importance of customer relations in the business world. Emphasis is placed on learning how to respond to complex customer requirements and to efficiently handle stressful situations. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate the ability to handle customer relations WBL 111 BUS 137 Customer Service Work-Based Learning I 0-10-1 This course provides work experience with a collegeapproved employer in an area related to the student’s program of study. Emphasis is placed on integrating classroom learning with related work experience.
