Dear Notre Dame Families, April 2015 Hope you had a Blessed Easter! Your children will be receiving their report cards today and we have officially moved into the last marking period of the year. A lot has been happening here at Notre Dame School over the past few weeks: Parish Center – Things are moving along on schedule and we’re looking forward to the opening in the fall of this year. Registration – Thank you to all our families who registered for the next school year. We have 80 percent who have recommitted, so for those of you who didn’t, please fill out and return your re-registration forms ASAP (you can find the form in weekly communications). Preschool- Registration is also in full swing for our Preschool program. Classes are filling up quickly so please call the school office and ask for Mrs. Brita if you have an interest in Preschool for next year. The preschool classes made colorful paper flowers for our 55+ Club friends so they know spring is on the way! They are also busy practicing for their End of Year Celebration. Eighth Grade/Middle School - The eighth grade just finished with Living Stations. Thank you to all our parents who attended and thank you to our Eighth Grade for a job well done. Our middle school is also in the midst of Academic Bowl scrimmages. Our ND Academic Bowl team will compete against other catholic schools in our region for a chance to attend the Diocesan Scrimmage in May. Our students who placed first in the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science competition in Easton, sixteen in all, will be attending Pennsylvania State University in May to once again present their experiments. Good Luck to all our students. Also, mark your calendars, our Eighth Grade Graduation is Sunday, June 7, at the 12:00 Mass. Grandparents Lunch – Our annual Grandparents Lunch was a Smashing Success!! We had more grandparents than ever and one of our grandparents won the Tuition Raffle and received a free tuition for their grandchild! Special thanks to our eighth graders who were busy serving lunch, as well as our Home and School Association for their help. Pro-Lunches provided a delicious lunch and Mrs. Thorley somehow fit everyone in the Church Hall and took care of all the arrangements – thanks to everyone who made this a very special event. Jump Rope for Heart - The American Heart Association, Jump Rope for Heart, was a jumping success. It was the first time our Kindergarten were able to participate and we had the best year ever! Thank you for your donations to a very worthy cause. Spring Movie Night - We are all looking forward to our “Old Fashion Movie Night.” Please try to take some time with your family and join us on April 26th in the Church Hall for popcorn and a movie. See communications for the flyer. More Spring Dates - First Holy Communion for our second grade is coming up on April 18th. Our little ones are so excited about being able to receive our Lord for the first time. We also have our May procession on Friday, May 8th. This policy is to protect both our students and our volunteers. As of November 1, 2014 no one will be able to volunteer in the school unless you have completed the following: Taken Protecting God’s Children workshop and turned in a copy of the certificate Filled out background check paperwork and paid $11 fee. Background check has been returned and is on file at the rectory. What is a volunteer? It is any parent, grandparent, relative or friend who will be coming into the school to help. This would include but not limited to class parties, working at lunch, and all field trips. We know many parents have been volunteering at the school for several years but we do need everyone to complete the required Protecting God's Children Workshop and background check paperwork. You will receive the background check paperwork when you attend the workshop. We feel this initial inconvenience is necessary to ensure the safety and peace of mind of our school community. DRESS DOWN DAY for JUDITH’S READING ROOM Thursday, April 16, 2015 Judith’s Reading Room is a non-profit organization located on 3rd Street in Bethlehem that provides fully stocked, custom- designed permanent libraries and mobile book carts to organizations that serve people with limited or no mobility and to communities with little or no access to books, both in the US and abroad. Recipients of libraries include hospitals, rehabilitation centers, children’s homes, adult community centers, international schools and local schools. Books are also sent to the men and women who are serving or have served in the US Military. Recently the military personnel serving on the ship the U.S.S. Eisenhower have been sent children’s books to read to their own children while skyping or on videotape so their children can have the experience of being read to by their parent. (An experience we at NDB take for granted!). Volunteers are needed for “Boxing Parties”, which are held monthly to pack up boxes of books to be shipped to a library or military installation. Monetary donations, as well as donations of children’s and adult books, are always welcome. For more information on Judith’s Reading Room and details on how you can help, please visit the website http://www.judithsreadingroom.org/. Thank you for your generosity!
