BIO Originally from Seattle, USA, Peter Gaffney is a composer, puppet maker, and theater director who has lived, taught and performed in New York, Prague, London, Paris, Philadelphia and Munich. As cofounder and director of Cabaret Red Light (2008–2011) and composer/music director at BRAT Productions (2012-2015), he has helped create thirty original theatrical productions with over 150 performances, chosen at times by TimeOut New York and Philadelphia’s City Paper as pick of the week and “must see” performances. Recent productions include The Future (http://tinyurl.com/FUTUREBrochure) and Gesualdo in Heaven, depicting the life, crimes, and musical inventions of Renaissance composer Carlo Gesualdo (http://tinyurl.com/GESUALDO-Brochure). As 2014 Artist in Residence at Leonrod-Haus für Kunst, he created a site-specific performance in a WWII-era barracks shower – Clown Death Peep Show – exploring the relationship between the body, performativity and time, and will lead the workshop “Objects & Play” (http://tinyurl.com/objectsandplay2015) as 2015 Artist in Residence at PLATFORM in Munich (http://www.platform-muenchen.de/en). In 2016, Peter’s work will be performed at the 10th International Puppet Days festival in Izmir, Turkey, and at DOT Theater in Istanbul (http://www.go-dot.org/?page_id=1727). Peter has studied puppetry, mask work and physical acting techniques with Pig Iron Theater (USA), Divadlo Continuo (CZ) and Rootless Root (BE), and has taught workshops on physical theater at Leonrod-Haus für Kunst (DE). A graduate of Stanford University (B.A., 1996) and University of Pennsylvania (M.A., 2000, Ph.D., 2006), Peter also teaches philosophy, cinema and theories of visual culture at The Curtis Institute of Music. His work on philosopher Gilles Deleuze, The Force of the Virtual (University of Minnesota Press, 2010), was nominated for the Michelle Kendrick Book Award in 2011. .............................................................................................................................................................................................. ARTISTIC STATEMENT Who has the right to tell stories? How do mainstream narratives make use of the spectacle – in mass media and public spaces, as well as the theater – to project the authority of the storyteller, regardless of the story? And by what system of checks and balances does the production of the spectacle remain an exclusive privilege? As head writer and MC at Cabaret Red Light (http://cabaretredlight.com), I created a contemporary cabaret theater style based on the “gleefully unauthorized use of spectacle,” mixing elements of Muppet Show, burlesque and culture critique in a narrative that was always bigger than what took place on stage. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/30/Cabaretredlight2009.jpg More recently, I developed performance techniques based on the principle of material constraint in physical theater works that explore “the opposite of puppetry.” Whereas most puppetry emphasizes the artist’s ability to organize matter to the point where it begins to convey meaning, my work investigates those ways in which matter resists organization to produce its own “language.” In Gesualdo in Heaven (http://gesualdoinheaven.com/video.html), the material constraints of the puppet come to revival the will of the puppeteer, compelling the audience to confront the brutality underlying the struggle for artistic control. In Clown Death Peep Show, (http://clowndeathpeepshow.com/CLOWNDEATH_PressRelease.pdf), a site-specific solo performance in a WWII-era barracks shower, I constructed a giant figure that holds a man in place as he struggles to understand what kind of movement the invisible audience expects of him. REVIEWS & PRESS* “I have worked in the American theater for over twenty-five years and have had the fortune of working with many brilliant artists. Peter is one of the two genuine geniuses I have met. His work is of the highest aesthetic standards; his craft is unquestioned; but more importantly, he knows what he wants to do. His intelligence is extraordinary, his vision is clear and his ambition immense. These are, sadly, three things you can’t say about many American theater artists.” — John Clancy, New York International Fringe Festival “Philadelphia is already known as a physical theater hub in the United States, and now our puppet arts movement is growing. Imaginative creators like Sebastienne Mundheim, Aaron Cromie and Peter Gaffney are at the forefront of the charge.”— Victor Fiorillo, Philadelphia Magazine The Future, featured on WHYY’s Newsworks, January 14, 2015 http://tinyurl.com/WHYY-Future The Future, reviewed by Deb Miller for Phindie.com, May 11, 2014 http://tinyurl.com/future-review The Future, interview for Phindie, May 12, 2014 http://tinyurl.com/future-interview1 ● Gesualdo in Heaven, Philadelphia Magazine, February 6, 2014 http://tinyurl.com/gesualdo-phillymag Gesualdo in Heaven, on WHYY’s Newsworks, February 14, 2014 http://tinyurl.com/gesualdo-whyy * Please see chronological listing below for press regarding upcoming and past works ..............................................................................................................................................................................................
