NEPAL EARTHQUAKE RESPONSE RAPID INTENTION SURVEY SITE 1 & 2 (CHAUTARA HUMANITARIAN HUB) 13TH MAY 2015 Page 1 of 3 INTRODUCTION On the 12th May 2015, Nepal experienced another earthquake of 7.1 magnitude earthquake with epicentre very close to Sindhupalchok District. The Humanitarian Hub at Chautara saw an influx of IDPs immediately after the earthquake. IOM opened its compound to shelter the vulnerable people and their families. 6 big family tents were earmarked to accommodate the incoming IDPs. Since, the population was coming in from immediate vicinity, it was important to know the intention of them. IOM rolled out a rapid intention survey in two of the sites inside the Humanitarian Hub. A set of very simple questions were asked to the head of the family to know their immediate intention. The data presented here comes from a sample size of 2 sites with 86 households and 417 internally displaced persons (IDPs) within the Humanitarian Hub. Number of Households Number of Individuals 112 30 56 305 Site 1 Site 2 Site 1 Site 2 FINDINGS Out of all HH interviewed 77% have totally destroyed house, 20% have damaged houses while 2% of them (all in Site 2) do not know the present status of their dwellings. Most of the respondent were scared to go back and check the status. Totally damaged dwellings were primary reason for not going back to their houses, but also presence of person with special needs with them are governing their decision. We have also found a lady who came from other district two years ago and had set up a tailoring shop. After she lost the shop, she has nowhere to go until a proper rehabilitation is provided. The average household size of Site-2 is 5.5 while that of site-1 is 3.7. The larger family size of Site-2 HHs can be a reason of people reluctant to venture out of the camp and seek other shelter. The presence of 50 children under the age of 5 within the sites is also a factor that can play an important role in future intentions of their families.
