FROM THE CHAIRMAN’S OFFICE
After a highly competitive matching process, we are pleased to announce that our top selected
applicants— Rabab Alshahrani (King Saud University), Ben Davidson (University of Western
Ontario), Francois Mathieu (University of Toronto), Chris Pasarikovski (University of Western
Ontario), and Jeff Zuccato (University of Toronto) —will be joining the Toronto residency
training program on July 1, 2015. We thank Residency Program Director Dr. Abhaya Kulkarni,
the Selection Committee and Ms. Sandi Amaral for their work in this process. We look forward
to celebrating the incoming PGY1 class at a welcome BBQ at the Chairman’s home this summer.
We congratulate PGY6 resident Ryan Alkins, PGY4 resident Teresa Purzner and PGY3 resident
Deep Guha, who swept the Canadian Neurological Society’s 2015 competition for the
K.G.McKenzie Prizes in Neuroscience Research, the most prestigious resident awards in our
discipline in Canada. Ryan’s work entitled “Early treatment of HER2-amplified brain tumors
with targeted NK-92 cells and focused ultrasound improves survival in a rodent brain tumour
model” and Teresa’s work entitled “Developmental Phospho-proteomics reveals Casein Kinase 2
as a therapeutic target in medulloblastoma” were co-winners of the Basic Science Prize. Deep’s
work entitled “Timing of resumption of antithrombotic agents following surgical evacuation of
chronic subdural hematomas: a retrospective cohort study” won the Clinical Research Prize.
Toronto Neurosurgery continued its historically strong performance in this competition, having
now won 25 of the 40 McKenzie Prizes (62.5%) awarded since 2000. Well done, Teresa, Ryan
and Deep!
Save the Date: The 1st Annual Alan R. Hudson lecture, organized by Dr. Fred Gentili, will take
place on Friday, April 24, 2015 in the Main Auditorium, West Wing 2-401 at Toronto Western
Hospital from 7:30-8:30am. The inaugural lecturer will be Dr. Hudson, past President and CEO
of the University Health Network, whose talk is entitled “My life and career - lessons learned”.
HONORS, GRANTS AND AWARDS
Mojgan Hodaie has been cross-appointed to the Joint Department of Medical Imaging,
University Health Network.
Lindsay Tetreault (photo: centre), a student of Dr. Michael Fehlings, received the Canadian
Spine Society 2015 Fellow’s Best Paper Award for her work entitled “The Minimal Clinically
Important Difference of the modified Japanese Orthopaedic Association Scale in Patients with
Degenerative Cervical Myelopathy undergoing Surgical Intervention”.
David Chen, a PhD candidate in Mojgan Hodaie's lab, won the MS Society Doctoral award for
his work on Neuroimaging correlates of pain in MS.
Deep Guha (PGY3) won the 2015 K.G.McKenzie Prize in Clinical Neuroscience Research.
Ryan Alkins (PGY6) and Teresa Purzner (PGY4) were co-winners of the 2015 K.G.McKenzie
Prize in Basic Neuroscience Research.

FACULTY FOCUS
Dr. Alexander “Sasha” Velumian graduated from Moscow State University
before going on to complete his PhD and DSc at the I.M. Sechenov Institute
of Evolutionary Physiology and Biochemistry of the Russian Academy of
Science in St. Petersburg. After completing his post-graduate training, he
became a Scientist – and later Leading Scientist – at the same institute. He
first joined the Toronto Western Research Institute in 1992 as a Research
Associate. Dr. Velumian is currently an Assistant Professor in the
Departments of Surgery and Physiology at the University of Toronto and a
Research Neuroscientist in Division of Neurosurgery at Toronto Western
Hospital, working in the spinal cord injury program headed by Dr. Michael Fehlings. His current
research focuses on the organization of the living myelin sheath and myelin-axon interactions in
CNS white matter, and functional aspects of myelination/demyelination in CNS white matter.
