SHEEP TAGGING & RECORDING REQUIREMENTS FROM 1ST JANUARY 2015
ENGLAND – LAMBS
As from 1st January all lambs being identified from this date on any holding in England must be identified with either Double
Electronic Tags (Breeders) or a Single Electronic Slaughter Tag (Prime Lambs and/or Store Lambs).
Sheep Keepers will record the single identified lambs by batch – recording the Number of
Animals and Flock Numbers.
Lambs born in 2014 and identified with a single, non-electronic tag DO NOT need to be
retagged when moved after 1st January 2015.
CULL EWES
Those individually identified with electronic tags will be electronically read and recorded.
For those individually identified with the old style Manual/Non-Electronic Tags (Historic Flock) it is our recommendation that
Sheep Keepers retag these at the time of selling with a set of double electronic tags.
However rules do permit:
Those sheep being moved as a “Batch” direct to slaughter (including through a market) using old manual tags as the identifier list the total number in each consignment
BUT
If these sheep move to a non-abattoir holding or through a market to a non-abattoir holding, they must have their individual
manual/non electronic tags (UK +(up to) 12 digits) read and recorded on the Movement Licence.
We recommend any Historic Flock with old style non electronic tags be sold with a declaration to slaughter.
Please ensure all Ewes sold are tagged with electronic tags – we will read them and provide you with print outs of numbers –
failure could impact upon your Single Farm Payment Monies. If in doubt please speak to Keith on 07801 032847 or James
on 07772 618315

British Blue cow leads English Premier Sale trade at Newark
Saturday’s English Premier Sale of Aberdeen-Angus, British Blue, Lincoln Red, Salers and
Simmental cattle at Newark saw a top call of 10,000gns paid for a British Blue cow and calf outfit from
Michelle Wilde’s Ridge Dean herd.
Michelle’s sale topper was Cromwell Gemini, an ET-bred black and white February 2011-born
Tamhorn Sumo daughter, out of the Woodview Solo daughter Ballygrange Dido. Bred in Adam
Neachell’s Cromwell herd, she sold with a Cromwell Gunner calf at foot, Ridge Dean Jazz and having
ran with Ridge Dean Hero to Swindells Livestock, Brant Broughton, Lincoln.
Joining her at her new home and taking the second top Blue female bid was the March 2014-born
Ridge Dean Jessie at 3500gns. This Kilowatt D’Ochain daughter is out of the Empire daughter Ridge
Dean Della and goes back to the great herd foundation cow Ridge Dean Jessie.
In the Lincoln Red females, top price was 2200gns for the female champion Westacre Bianca from W
A R Mallon. Born April 2013, this one is by Market Stainton King and out of Westacre Bianca, a
Market Stainton Councillor daughter. She sold to C S Page, Newport, East Yorkshire.
Then selling at 1650gns was Walmer Heroine S966 from the Needler family. This Beverley Jaunty
daughter is out of Walmer Heroine L26, a Walmer Falcon daughter and sold in-calf to Othorpe Rufus.
Buying this one was M E Williams, Braybrook, Market Harborough.
Just behind this at 1600gns was Othorpe Lisle S40 from W E Jackson. This one is a Holyoak
Laudable daughter and is out of Hillside Lisle L11, a Norton George daughter. She was knocked
down to S Keen, Ecclesfield, Sheffield.
Meanwhile, the Simmental female offering, saw a top price was 2100gns for the second place
Midhope Emma from the Hollingsworth family. This one is by Dirnanean Snowie and out of a
Pasturehouse Paleface daughter. She sold having ran with the 10,000gns Delfur Chas and was
bought by H Curtis and Son, Pensford, Bristol.
From the same home was the female champion, a Snowie daughter out of another Paleface daughter. She traded at 2000gns selling to K Hall and Son, Spalding, Lincolnshire.
And, leading the Aberdeen-Angus female prices was a 1400gns call for the female champion St Fort
Etrilla N268 from Andrew Mylius. By Netherton Keystone G440, she’s out of a Fordafourie Kris B300

1673 Cull Ewes and Rams
Another improved entry of Cull Ewes and Rams today. However not as good a quality show as last
week. Today we saw a lot of leaner plain Ewes as well as our fair share of lambing misfits. On paper, we
averaged a pound less on the week and fat was a little harder to place.
Top price today went to IPG Farms who sold Texel and Charollais to £166.00. Messrs Richardson sold
Continental cross Ewes to £151.00. Garfield Stephens sold Suffolk x Scotch Half Breds to £140.00 and
Cheviots to £132.00. Blisworth Estates sold Continentals to £141.00. Messrs Andrews and Messrs
Powly sold Continental crosses at £140.00. Wendy Pickard sold Texel cross Ewes to £139.00 and
£130.00 and Nigel Thorndyke sold Suffolks to £139.00 and £130.00.
Rams sold extremely well today with Nigel Thorndyke selling Charollais to £166.00 Mark Crowder was a
pound behind for the same goods selling to £165.00, Nigel Conway, Ireland sold Texels to £155.00
Overall Average: Ewes - £107.00
Rams - £108.23
Ewes & Lambs
A real mixture and trade to match. Some nice 2nd Lamber Continental Ewes from R Partridge and Son
made £198.00 per family whilst older Ewes from DK Bower made from £154 to £170 per family. Mules
from Aitken & Merry and G & DM Howsam £118 and £105 whilst some Easy Cares from N Nelstrop £81.
Store Lambs
An odd Goat from I & K Smith £60, whilst the store lambs saw a real mixture from some 3 part meat hogs
to a few odds and ends but all well sold.

Voting slips are out, please vote - BWMB English Central Region Nominee Kate Drury -Katherine E
Drury Bsc(Hons) NDA AICB MRAC
After talking to farmers recently in markets throughout the Midlands it is clear that the wool industry faces an exciting and challenging time. I look forward, if elected, to working hard to meet these challenges on your behalf.
The BWMB is invaluable to the sheep industry always providing a place to sell wool. In turn supporting
all sheep producers and the stratification system that we rely on to maintain agriculture as a way of life
throughout the UK. They actively engage with all levels of the wool industry from farm to shop and are
best placed to help the industry adapt to the market. Ultimately price is key and we must strive to make
wool a valuable commodity and not a cost to the farm budget.
I have been fortunate to have been involved in agriculture my whole life, growing up and working on the
family farm near Market Harborough, Leics/Northants Border. Competing at a National level with
Berrrichon sheep and regularly visiting the Paris Show.
Attending two agricultural colleges, Moulton and The Royal at Cirencester, and working on research
stations both in the Uk and in France I am passionate about where we stand in the sheep world for both
wool and meat. I have worked for a shearing gang, an agricultural market, education/farming charity
and have experience of lobbying, and the board room through Council and School Governor work.
The English Central Region covers a diverse 17 counties and therefore requires a broad approach to
represent it. It is an exciting time with wool commanding a bigger audience through the “Campaign for
Wool”, demand increasing on the world stage, consumers wanting local/natural products and shearing
training valued. If I am successful I will relish the opportunity to represent you.
