The 16th Annual Rendezvous and In the Water Boat Show
Lake Winnipesaukee, Wolfeboro, New Hampshire
Saturday, June 6th, 2015
In the water at 9:00 AM
Raffle and Silent Auction Results at 2:00 PM
Hello Lyman Enthusiasts,
This year’s annual show weekend promises to be a good one and we hope you are making your
plans now. The rendezvous and boat show will be held on Lake Winnipesaukee at the town docks in
downtown Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, as it has for the last 15 years. As always, all Lyman and
other lapstrake-style boat owners are encouraged to participate!
There are a couple of changes this year that we hope will entice you to bring your beautiful boat to
the show. This year there is no registration fee for participation and dock space. All you have to do
is contact us using the information below so we know how many boats to expect and can plan dock
space accordingly. There will be people available to help you launch your boat.
We will be having the “dollar raffle” that is always so much fun, and this year we are adding a
“silent auction” as well, where you can bid on a variety of items generously donated to the club.
We hope to spark some friendly bidding wars in efforts to raise money to support NELG’s
contribution to the New Hampshire Boat Museum's youth boat building program and student
scholarship fund.
While our show is not a judged event, you can still vote for your favorite boats. Your votes are
tallied and “Peoples Choice” awards are presented for Best Inboard, Best Outboard, and Best
Unrestored. Awards are given at the end of the day after the raffle winners and silent auction results
are announced.
After the show, join us for a relaxing and informal post-show cruise. Some members have done this
in the past and all are invited to take part. Our boats have been tied up at the dock all day and we
will be ready to go for a ride!
Thursday, June 4th
The fun starts on Thursday with a pre-event cruise on Great East Lake. This beautiful 1,825-acre
body of water is about 40 minutes from downtown Wolfeboro and shares shoreline with Wakefield,
New Hampshire and Acton, Maine (for GPS users-zip code 04001). Club member Len Abrahamson
has asked his good friend Jay Vanderhoof to be our guide for the day. Jay grew up boating on the
lake and knows the area well.
We will launch from the boat ramp in Acton, just over the state line in Maine at 10:00 am. To get to
the ramp, approach the southern end of the lake on Rt.16 and exit onto Rt.109 and go toward
Wakefield, and at the intersection of Rt. 109 and Rt. 153 go straight across onto Witchtrot Road.
Continue for 3.5 miles on Witchtrot and it turns into Canal Road.
Just after you cross the state line, turn left onto Robertson Road, and then take another quick left to
the Public Boat Access ramp and parking. There is no gas on the lake, but you can fuel up at the
Mobil station at the corner of Rt. 16 and Rt. 109 in Wakefield, NH on your way in.
The lake tour begins as we head north directly after launching, and circle around Veazey Point
toward the east and into the Maine side of the lake. We’ll continue east through the Narrows and
into a part of the lake favored by fisherman. The shoreline is close on both sides, and Len and Jay
report that this area makes for some “interesting gunkhole type boating”!
We will circle back through the Narrows and head west toward the New Hampshire side of the lake
where we will explore the Scribner River. There are a couple of notable rock piles near the mouth of
the river, but our guide assures us we can navigate by them safely, and that this area is a scenic gem
that’s really worth the effort.
We plan to dock our boats on the north shore of the lake and enjoy our brown bag lunch. After
lunch we can cruise some more or head back and haul out. Back in Wolfeboro, there are plenty of
restaurants where you can enjoy a nice evening and dinner on your own. We’ll reconvene again in
the morning for another great day of boating on the “Big Lake.”
Friday, June 5th
Club member and Bear Island resident John Benham has graciously offered to host us for lunch and
lead us on a “Close Encounters” tour of the waters around the Bear Island and Meredith Neck
region of Lake Winnipesaukee (aka The Big Lake). We will launch from Shep Brown’s Boat Basin,
31 Lovejoy Sands Road, Meredith, NH 03253, at 10:00 am. To get to Shep Brown’s, follow
Pleasant Street out of Meredith and turn onto Meredith Neck Rd. and wind your way to Lovejoy
Sands Rd. There is a small launch fee and parking at the site.
It will be a 1 ½ - 2-hour excursion and John is providing lunch at his home on Bear Island where
there will be plenty of room to tie up the boats. Our ride will start by following John, weaving and
maneuvering around Beaver and Three Mile Islands, sneaking between the docks of the American
Mountain Club camp and the shore of Hawks Nest Island before navigating the length of Bear
Island, then toward the Mink and Mark Islands. After passing between the islands, we continue west
into open water, then head to a narrow passage between Stonedam Island and Meredith Neck
known as Sally’s Gut. We’ll leave the Gut then head east around the tip of the Neck and back up
toward Bear Island and lunch!
Friday Night, June 5th Cocktails and Welcome Dinner
We are trying something different this year and it promises to be great! Keeping with member’s
requests for a simple, fun and casual evening, NELG will host a cocktail hour before dinner at a
convenient location. Following cocktails, we have reservations at Nolan’s Bistro and Pub at 39
North Main St., downtown Wolfeboro. Nolan’s has a casual dining atmosphere and a nice outdoor
patio. There will be a cash bar, we’ll order off the menu, and have separate checks. Help us give the
restaurant a head count, please RSVP to [email protected] or by phone at 978-886-3545.
Saturday, June 6, Boat Show, Raffle and Silent Auction
Launching will begin 8:00 am and by 9:00 am we hope to have all the boats in the water and
arranged at the dock. New this year, we will have a table of silent auction items, and we are able to
accept credit cards! We will also be selling raffle tickets and merchandise with the N.E.L.G club
logo. At 2:00 pm we will call out the raffle and silent auction winners and then present the awards.
After things wind down, join us for an informal post-show ride.
