7th Annual
Newmarket Studio Tour & Art Show
Presented by the Newmarket Group of Artists
Saturday October 3, 2015 - 10am to 5pm and Sunday October 4, 2015 - 11am to 5pm
APPLICATION GUIDELINES
Application Deadline – Friday April 3, 2015, 5pm
The 7th Annual Newmarket Studio Tour, organized by the Newmarket Group of Artists (NGA), is a
juried event featuring the work of local artists and collectives. All home studios and community venues
are located within 1 kilometer of historic downtown Main Street. In total we have around 10 venues
and usually 2 to 3 artists show at each location, making access to the event a relaxing experience.
After artists are juried into the tour we carefully place artists that compliment each other in other artists
home studios or at Main Street Business or at community venues. Artists are able to meet with the
public personally and discuss, promote and sell their work.
Who can apply?
Artists and Collectives who are members of the NGA can apply for the Studio Tour. Membership is
yearly and runs from April 1, 2015 to March 31, 2016. Artist membership is $25 a year and Collective
membership is $50 a year. Artists of all mediums are welcome. You may live in Newmarket or be an
outside resident1. To streamline the process we have made it so you automatically apply for your NGA
membership at the same time that you apply for the Studio Tour.
Studio Tour Artist
• 1Preference will be given to artists living and working in Newmarket. Of the artists selected,
at least 80% must be Newmarket residents.
• 1Artists applying from outside of Newmarket are subject to an additional Non-Resident Fee
of $25.
• 2Artists may apply as a Studio Artist if their home studio is close to Main St.
• Artists who live outside the core of downtown would apply as a Guest Artist and if juried in,
will be placed with a complementing artist in their home studio or at Main Street Business or
at community venues such as the Community Centre or New Town Hall.
Studio Tour Collective
• A group of 5 or more artists working together and united by a defining theme may apply
as an Artist Collective.
• The majority (at least 75%) of the members of the Collective must reside in Newmarket.
• A Collective can display a maximum of 20 pieces of art. Work that is sold may be replaced
with another piece of artwork made by a juried member of the collective.
• One representative from the Collective will be responsible for coordinating and
displaying the work from their group. The representative will submit one application on
behalf of the group.

Studio Artist Locations
• 2To ensure the best success for our artists in terms of potential visitors, we highly
recommend that all Studio Artists be located within the area defined by the following
boundaries: Queen Street to the North, Prospect Street to the East, Water Street to the
South, Lorne Avenue to the West.
Responsibilities of the Artist
• Applicants must be the designer, creator and producer of the artwork sold during the tour.
• Kit works, ceramics from commercial moulds and factory or mass-produced articles are not
permitted. Ready-made components may be used where appropriate but these must be
secondary to the nature and design of the work and not the primary components.
• Reproductions (i.e. Giclee prints) of original works must be to professional standards and
clearly identified as reproductions to the public.
• Work offered for sale must be very similar to the work shown in the photos accompanying
your application. Tour representatives will visit your venue to ensure compliance and reserve
the right to ask you to remove from display items that differ significantly from those in your
application.
• Artists are responsible for all insurance, vendor’s permits, liabilities and costs incurred for
their location. NOTE: Liability insurance is provided for artists showing at Town of
Newmarket facilities.
• Each artist is responsible for his/her own display of artwork. Easels, tables, etc. will not be
provided, with the exception of tables and chairs for Community Centre artists.
• Artists are expected to distribute brochures/posters/postcards and promote the studio tour
through their website, email/mail contacts, at other shows they’re in, etc.
• Artists are required to select and perform at least one duty from a list that will be provided
upon acceptance to the tour. Duties may include: manning an NGA booth at the Farmers’
Market or Multicultural Day, putting out and collecting signs, soliciting sponsorship, etc.
Failure to select and perform a duty will be taken into consideration should you apply to the
tour another year.
• Artists are expected to attend the Artists Reception on the evening of Thurs September 24.
Location: The newly renovated Town Hall on Botsford St. Please add to your calendars now.
• The Newmarket Group of Artists appreciates the value of fine art and craftsmanship. To
maintain the integrity of all artists, signs offering pricing discounts, sales, or combination
offers will not be permitted to be displayed at your studio location.
• Artists are encouraged to provide refreshments at their studios.
Set-up Times and Details
• Set up at studios must be completed by 9:30am on the first day of the tour.
• Artists are responsible for their own displays, whether in their own studio or guest location
(easels, tables, etc.).
• Studios must be continuously manned by the artist for the duration of the tour. For Artist
Collectives, at least two members of the Collective must be present at all times during the
tour (this may be on a rotating basis).

Artists Reception – Thursday September 24
• The Artists Reception is a great opportunity for studio tour artists to network and thank our
sponsors. Artists will be asked to bring piece(s) of their work to put on display. The Reception
is on Thursday September 24 at the newly renovated Town Hall. Time and details will be
shared in August.
The Selection Process
• Previous acceptance to the tour is not a guarantee of admission as the jury process takes
place annually. Photos submitted for jurying must be of recent works and represent the
complete range of artwork intended for show/sale, even if the artist has applied previously.
• Submissions are juried blind (i.e. the jury members see only the images provided; names of
applicants are not disclosed to the jury). The jury consists of professional artists and
educators, none of whom are applying to the tour.
• The selection by the jury is based solely on the quality of the work as shown in your
application. Attention will be paid to the excellence of design and/or function of the work and
the overall impression of the work. Good quality images are critical. (Tip: crop out frame and
focus on artwork.)
• Work exhibited during the tour must be very similar to the work presented to the Jury in your
application. A committee member will visit studios during the tour to confirm compliance.
