‘Malhar Employment
Meet 2015’ opens, but
Minister skips the meet
By Umesh Parida
NEW PANVEL: The
‘Malhar Employment
Meet 2015’ was inaugurated on Saturday. The
event was inaugurated
by Ramseth Thakur at
the CKT ACS College.
The meet was not attended by the Minister
Prakash Mehta and
this disappointed the
organisers.
Speaking on the occasion, the leader said
“The youth are now in-
telligent and working
well. While doing degree course technical
education is the need of
the hour and hence the
youth are motivated to
do these courses.” The
MLA said that such a
meet will help 1000
youths who are seeking
job.
Several hundreds of
youth turned up for the
event and had discussion and interview with
the companies. The
MLA also said that the
labour
Minister
Prakash Mehta will roll
out a policy to safeguard the interest of the
workers. The meet has
attracted 5639 applicants who are in the
queue seeking jobs and
had registered their
name. Around 300 volunteers are working to
make the event successful.

Pulses become dear
Unseasonal rains, crop loss blamed
By Chandrashekhar Hendve
VASHI: Wholesale
prices of pulses (dals)
have risen sharply
causing concerns of yet
another price spiral and
the consequent straining of household budgets.
According to sources in APMC’s wholesale
market, price of tur dal
has gone up from Rs 65
per kilo to Rs 72/74 per
kilo. Udid dal is being
quoted at
Rs 70 per
kilo, up
from Rs
60, Masur
dal Rs 70
(up from
Rs 56) and
chana dal
Rs 48 per
kilo (up
from Rs
40). Mug
dal is the costliest and
is being quoted at Rs
120 per kilo. Traders
are reporting a sharp
fall in arrivals which is
being ascribed to crop
loss on account of unseasonal rains and hail
storms.
Most pulses are
coming from producing
centers in Punjab,
Haryana, UP, Rajasthan, Gujarat and
Madhya Pradesh.
April-May is the season
when new harvests arrive but this year, there
is visible shortage of
supplies, say traders.
Increase in transportation costs is also being
quoted as another reason for the price rise.
Side by side with
pulses, prices of wheat
has also recorded a
sharp increase. Average
quality of wheat is being quoted at Rs 40 per
kilo up from Rs 28
which was prevailing
two months ago. All
these revisions are
bound to strain the
household budget of average families to the
extent of 25 to 30%, say
market sources.

7 arrested on the charge
of stealing chemicals
By Vikram Gaikwad
TURBHE: Seven persons, including three
vehicle drivers, have
been caught red handed
when they engaged in
stealing liquid chemicals from a tanker at
Turbhe MIDC on Friday.
Following a tip off, a
police team under the
guidance of DCP Shahaji Umap, lay in wait
in the vicinity of S K
Wheels in Turbhe
MIDC. As expected, two
tankers filled with
chemicals arrived on
the scene at about midnight and started siphoning off chemicals
into drums loaded on to
a tempo stationed nearby. They were using
plastic pipes for transferring the stuff. The
waiting cops pounced on
the thieves and round-
ed up seven of them including their leader,
Majoj Kumar Prajapati.
Two tankers, one tempo
and other implements
used in the operation
have been seized.
During the interrogation that followed, it
came to light that one of
the tankers was filled
with Acetone and the
other with phenyl. The
gang was used to steal-
ing chemicals and selling them in the open
market for the last over
two years.

conducted by the police
team led by PSI Rohan

“The chief of the gang,
Shyam Yadav, has been
absconding and we

Drug menace in Turbhe area
Youths being targeted by unscrupulous traders
By Chandrashekhar Hendve
VASHI: There is wide
spread resentment over
the inaction of police
about the open of hawking of drugs in the slum
colonies of Turbhe.
The colonies like
Ambedkar Nagar, Hanuman Nagar and
Ganesh Nagar are
thickly populated with
slum units. A narrow
road connects this area
to the MIDC industrial
area which provides
employment to most of
the residents. What is
galling is that drugs

wage earners. They get
cash in hand everyday
which they are prompted to splurge on drugs.
That is affecting them
as well as their families. While the police

Upbeat Mumbai FC Hopes To
Upset Host Dempo: I League
Text and Photo
by Ashok Dhamija
MUMBAI: Mumbai
FC, back to full
strength, are all
geared up for the
strong challenge
against Dempo SC,
Goa in a 21st round
I-League match to be
played at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Fatorda, Margao, Goa on Sunday
evening.
Khalid Jamil,
coach of the Mumbai
club returns to the
hot seat after serving
a four-match suspension imposed by the
AIFF, on the eve of
the match said “We
have been working
hard during the
break over the last
two weeks and have
worked out different
strategies, which we
plan to execute in the
match tomorrow as I
am determined to get
a positive result. I
have instructed my
players that they
have to stay focused
and give more than
100 percent as a win
is very important for
the team”.
The Mumbai side
will also look to
avenge their 1-0
defeat against Dempo
in the last meeting at
home. Carlos Hernandez had converted
a late contentious
penalty to give the
Goans a win. This
match is crucial for
both teams as Mumbai FC and former
champions Dempo,
are not yet safe from
the relegation zone.
The Mumbai outfit
with 17 points from
Mumbai FC (Yellow Jersey) who lost by a solitary goal
after dominating the proceedings in the previous encounter against Dempo SC (White Jersey), will hope to
settle scores this time around (File Photo).
as many games
presently occupy the
ninth position ahead
of the Goan club who
are in the 10th spot
with a tally of 16
points from the same
number of matches
played. Sporting
Clube de Goa sits at
the bottom with 14
points.
The good news for
Mumbai FC is that
their hard-working
inspirational and
attacking Japanese
midfielder Taisuke
Matsugae will add
depth to their attack
and put pressure on
the Dempo defence,
Brazilian Josimar Da
Silva, who has so far
scored 7 goals in this
competition will
continue to spearhead
the attack in the
company of Mohammed Rafi and Jayesh
Rane and coach
Jamil will hope they
capitalise on every
single opportunity.
Stopper Justine
Stephen is also likely
to regain his place
alongside Chika Wali,
while wing backs
Allan Dias and Rahul
Bheke will complete
the backline. Sampath Kuttymani and
Ashutosh Mehta will
have to once again
produce a good
performance in the
midfield to support
Matsugae and the
defenders. Substitute
goalkeeper Sanjiban
Ghosh will be part of
the starting XI in the
absence of injured
Goalkeeper Nidhinlal
A.C. and will hope to
repay the faith of his
coach and reproduce
the same kind of
form as he did in the
last match against
Mohun Bagan, which
ended in a 1-1 draw.
The Mumbai club
can also draw confidence from the fact
that they remained
unbeaten in their last
four games, which
have ended in identical 1-1 draws, including three tough away
matches. Mumbai FC
is also desperate for a
win as their last
success came against
Bharat FC, Pune, in
late February.

at
Wankhede Stadium on
Thursday, Mumbai
Indians scripted a sensational five runs win
over defending champions Kolkata Knight
Riders to keep their
hopes alive of progressing to the Play-off ’s
(knock out stage).
Batting first, MI’s
Hardik Pandya and
Kieron Pollard combined to smash 92
runs in their unbeaten fifth wicket partnership to help their
side overcome a collapse and recover from
a precarious position
of 79 for 4 in the 12th
over to post 171 for 4
in 20 overs. KKR who
were in complete control till the penultimate over fell short
with the dismissal of
their all-rounder
Yusuf Pathan dismissed by Pollard in
the first ball of the final over (needing 12
runs of six balls) and
ended at 166 for 7.

The 21year

runs which
earned him
the ‘Man of

match conference. He
said “ Yusuf (Pathan)
was playing and was
on strike. He got him
out first ball and then
did not allow a boundary hit in the over, or
they (Kolkata Knight
Riders) could have
won. This last over
was more important
than my innings as
the entire match’s result was (based) on
this over”. MI however still need to a win
in their final game
against Sunrisers Hyderabad to seal a spot
in the final four and a
relieved winning skipper Rohit Sharma
said” It was a very
nerve-racking game.
We all know it went to
the last over but we
held our nerves, and it
was a wonderful game
for the spectators.
When we were batting, the ball was stopping; odd ball was gripping and turning, so
we didn’t know exactly what the par score
was. During the strategic time-out [we decided Pollard would
bowl the last over].

Idea of creating smart cities is not bad
The Union Cabinet’s nod to the 100 smart cities
project and a new urban renewal mission is an important step. A shade less than a third of India’s population now lives in urban areas, overcrowded cities and
towns with infrastructure bursting at the seams. More
Indians migrate to the cities and towns in search of
jobs. Cities are engines of growth, and as a result attract a lot of people. The country’s urban population
contributes over 60 per cent of India’s GDP.
Creating a smart city isn’t just about creating the
physical infrastructure — roads, clean water, power,
transport and so on, things India finds difficult to deliver to its citizens nearly seven decades after Independence. The big challenge will be to create selfsustaining cities, which create jobs, use resources
wisely and also train people.
Whether that can happen is a moot question depending heavily on the maturity of the Indian political
system. It is in this regard people need to engage.
Having entrusted care of their hard earned tax money
in the hands of politicians, all they can only do is to
continue to monitor how they are spending that money. People need to come together in their local ward
level and monitor how much money is being allocated
for their ward improvement, and how the projects are
being executed on an routine basis. Being so engaged
shows their patriotism and also gives them better returns for their tax money. It is in this space that several NGOs are operating to bring the people to work
with their local govt. at their local level.
Major problem for this plan is that in our country
corruption grabs everything easily and in this kind of
project government needs much more time and financial support and proper monitoring upon this project,
and this is a kind of hard task to do.
The Bharatiya Janata Party’s idea of satellite cities
have been already tried successfully in Mumbai with
Navi Mumbai. This does not require any funds and
will be self sustaining. In fact the Navi Mumbai is cash
rich and helping the state of Maharashtra. It is a puzzle why no government is trying this successful model
and making the life of people more comfortable and
create some funds for the government also.
According to some people, the 100 smart cities
project and a new urban renewal mission sounds good
on paper. But in practice it will only be money-spinner
enterprise for the Contractor, Builders & Developers and Service providers. The ordinary city dweller
would pay increased taxes out of his nose in return for
a high cost of living and low on commensurate amenities and civic facilities. Leaders as ever will protect
the illegal slums and the filth would continue to haunt.
Farmers would sell their lands adjoining these cities
to builders and agricultural sector will get a further
jolt.
Anyway, states have been given autonomy and finances to proceed by choosing the cities they want to
ramp up and create new models of efficiency and
achieve next level of governance. But the money to
be spent on creating infrastructure, institutions and
supposedly people friendly zones of interaction and
communication must keep people and that too of all
the stratum at the forefront. “Exclusive zones” should
be avoided and there must be opportunities for all to
work, play, earn and create a living.

PMC monitors ground level
staff doing water supply
valve operation work
By Umesh Parida
PANVEL: A week after the Panvel Municipal Council formed a
committee to monitor
the water-stresshit areas under
mounting public
pressure there
seems little respite. However,
the ground level
staff involved in
water supply
valve operation
is being supervised regularly.
Another layer of supervisors are
going to the valve points
to monitor whether
they are doing the work
properly or not. This
has resulted in providing some respite in water supply but the pressure is low. Further,
the continuous works of
CIDCO and MJP pipe-
lines have been completed, thereby leading
to further improvement, informed an official from the PMC.
Further, the water
supply department official said, “We have noticed that the water
stress is high in pioneer
area and hence tankers
are put in to service. At
present, 11 tankers are
used to supply water to
the water stressed areas of Panvel. There is
little respite but not as
required by the people.
We do not have water in the Dehrang dam
as of now. Hopefully the
situation will
not improve in
these months
given various
factors, says the
official concerned. The politically monitored program
through supervisors has yielded little.
It can be noted that the water tank
located close to the Pioneer are under repair
by the PMC. Hence the
water stress level is
high in the Pioneer
area, says the official.
The situation will continue and water supply
will be made through
tankers.

60 percent of pre-monsoon
work completed, says PMC
sanitary department head
By Umesh Parida
PANVEL: The Panvel
Municipal Council has
claimed that sixty percent of the pre-monsoon
work is over. The sanitary department head
D S Kadam said this
while saying that remaining work will be
completed before the
onset of monsoon.
About the work he
said, “Most of the drainage lines have been
cleaned. The desilting
work in the nullahs are
also fast progressing.
In certain areas the
work will continue even
after the monsoon. The
reason is that most of
such drains or nullah
are found choked as it
gets dry from October.”
He also claimed,
“As no water is found
flowing in such drains,
these are chocked up.
We are able to clean the
drains but the culvet
underneath could not
be cleaned during the
pre-monsoon work.
When the monsoon water hits such drain we
start working based on
the reports of water logging.”
He added, “When
we get water logging
report we send out team
to clean the culvet. The
water flow eases the
work as we push the
silt which got wet due
to monsoon water. The
cleaning staff smoothly
handles this work
which is not possible in
the summer period.”
However, he declined to
reveal such locations
and its numbers.
The contractors employed in such work are
found busy cleaning the
road sides, slum areas,
gutters, drains, etc.
The PMC is also executing some gutter concretisation work in
some parts of the city.
RTE admission works stops
following the HC order
By Umesh Parida
PANVEL: The
admission under the
Right to Education Act
has been stalled
following the HC
order. The Panvel
Block Education
Officer N B Sable
provided this information. “They have to
wait till June 10 when
the next hearing is
scheduled,” he said.
It can be noted
that at those schools
which have not
advised the poor and
less educated parents
about the detailed
process, the latter’s
children are facing the
heat. A Kamothe gaon
resident, who had
been moving rounds
between a school in
Kamothe and the
Block Education
Office, Panvel, revealed the story in
anonymity.
He had applied and
filled the form online
in a school in Kamothe. That was
during the scheduled
time for application
under RTE. However,
the school authorities
got the form filled up
but did not inform
him about the next
process. He was
hoping that the work
would be completed
but he found himself
in a fix when his
admission under the
RTE quota was
disapproved.
The school reportedly stated that the
BEO office should
verify the claim. As
the claim did not
reach the school the
admission could not be
granted, the school
said. When we took up
the issue with the
BEO N M Sable he
cited the court restriction and asked to wait
till June 10 when the
court comes up with
the final decision. The
aggrieved person has
submitted a letter to
the BEO office but in
vain following the
Court order. Whether
his application will be
considered or not is
not known and thus
he is left in the lurch.

Supply of recycled water from
STP helps save drinking water
By Dinesh Kamath
NAVI MUMBAI: Navi
Mumbai Municipal
Corporation started
commercially supplying recycled water
from its sewage
treatment plant (STP)
at Nerul to a Seawoods cooperative
housing society. The
residents of this
society use this
treated water for its
gardens, washing cars
and lobbies of the 11
towers housing 660
flats. This method is
saving them around 8
to 10 MLD of precious
drinking water and
also cut cost.
Pipelines have
been connected to the
gardens. The pipeline
has been connected
from the STP across
the Palm Beach Road
to an underground
tank in the society. A
pump has been
installed to the tank
to supply water to the
gardens and an
overhead tank which
in turn is connected to
taps meant for washing vehicles, cleaning
lobbies and other
common areas.
