STANDARD - MAKEUP FOR STAGE
You will need:
Primer, moisturiser, or sunscreen
1 x liquid or compact foundation, slightly darker than natural skin tone
1 x cheek colour, pink, rose, or palest red
1 x crème or natural toned eye shadow
1 x brown eye shadow
1 x brown eye pencil
1 x bright red lipstick* (matte) or a soft red lip pencil for the whole lip
1 x translucent powder (optional)
1 x foundation sponge or brush to apply
Optional:
1 x White eye pencil
1 x Red eye pencil or non-toxic red face paint
1 x Mascara or False Eyelashes
*Please do not use long staying lipsticks as these leave stains on the costumes.
Note: If your child has sensitive skin, barrier creams can be purchased from the chemist to go on the skin prior to
the makeup.
How to:
1.
Always start with a clean face. Apply a little moisturiser, primer or sunscreen
2.
Apply foundation over face and chin, blending into neck as you go. Blend down towards
collarbone, but not to far, so as not to spoil costume.
3.
Apply cheek colour starting from the ear and blending towards the apple of the cheeks, and then
blending upwards towards the top of the ear, do not allow the blusher to go lower than the lip line
4.
Lightly dust with a foundation setting powder or translucent powder (optional)
5.
Apply a cream or natural toned eye shadow all over the eye area, from the eyelashes/lid to the
eyebrow area. Apply a brown eye shadow to the eye socket area. If your child is small or uncooperative just apply brown shadow to eyelid area.
6.
Using the brown pencil (or a pencil matched to the child’s hair colour) define the eyebrows.
7.
Using the same pencil draw a fine line at the base of the upper lashes extending out beyond the
eye in an upward flick. Using the same pencil draw a fine line under the eye extending slightly
beyond the eye, either going straight out or flicking down slightly.
8.
Optional - Using the white pencil put a small amount of white in the inner corner of the eye.
9.
Optional - Then put a tiny dot of red on the white area.
10.
Optional - Using the white pencil again, put a small line (or flick) between the brown flicks at the
side of the eye. Then put a finer red line on top of the white line.
11.
Optional – Mascara or false lashes.
12.
Apply lip colour and blot, you are aiming for red stained defined lips, not a shiny gloss pout.

HOW TO MAKE BALLET HAIR BUN
All dancers (including ballet, jazz, contemporary and hip hop) of any age are required to have all the
hair items listed below. If you are sitting an exam or performing at the concert you will have to bring all
these items with you.
Hair Brush
Fine tooth comb with tail
Clear hair gel
Strong hold hair spray
Hair pins (20 minimum)
Bobby pins (10 minimum)
Strong Hair ties (4 minimum)
Hair/bun nets (2 minimum)

NB: Please don’t wash your hair for at least 2 days prior to the exam or concert. Clean shiny hair is
extremely difficult to work with!

HOW TO MAKE BALLET HAIR BUN
Step One – A Ponytail
To start the process, wet the hair with water. Use a fine tooth comb to
slick back the hair with gel so there are no fly-always! Gather the hair
and pull it back into a ponytail that sits right on the crown of the head.
Use a fine tooth comb to smooth out rough or uneven areas. Use an
elastic hair band to secure the pony tail. A tidy pony tail with hair
drawn snugly back is the key to making a good ballet bun!
Step Two
Apply gel to keep the hair neat, and twist the pony tail. Coil the pony
tail into a tight circle. If your child has fine hair, spray with hairspray
first to add some body to the hair, before twisting.
Step Three
Use open U hair pins all around the coil to secure it to the rest of the
hair. Slide each pin through the outer part of the coil, then into the
base of the bun. Spray the bun for extra hold.
Step Four
Wrap a fine hair net around the bun. Keep twisting and wrapping so
that the hair net tightly secures the bun. Add a few more pins.
Step Six
For extra hold, when the bun and hair are all secure, use hairspray!
