The Life of Serena Williams Introduction Do you know who Serena Williams is? She is a famous tennis player. She has won over $32 million dollars, making her the highest paid woman athlete ever. When She Was Young What did Serena Williams do when she was young? When she was a kid she lived in a poor town. She was already really good at tennis on her first practice. She didn’t want to play any sport but tennis. Her parents were very strict when it came to school. They did not let her play tennis unless she got staight “A’s” in school. She loved music. She kept up with all the popular bands, listend to the radio and bought CD’s. Some of her hobbies are reading, watching movies, playing football, spending time with her family, acting and talking on the phone. Dad and Sister Serena’s dad wanted her to become very good at tennis at a very young age, that age was four. When she was a kid people could already tell that she was going to be really good at tennis, same with Venus. People knew and recognized Venus more than her sister, Serena because Venus was older. In 1999 the Williams sisters played separate schedules so they rarely played in the same tournaments. Serena got her fantastic sports skills from her dad. Tournaments and Early Success Serena started playing tennis professionally and winning tournaments in 1995 at the age of fourteen. In 1999 she lost in the third round of the Australian Open to Sandrine Testud. The next month she won her first professional singles title when she defeated Ame'lie Mauresmo in the final Open of the Gaz de France in Paris. She travels around the world playing in these tournaments, making millions of dollars for her wins. As a result of her success, Serena also earns millions of dollars for her endorsements, when you are paid to represent a brand or product in their advertisements. Serena endorses or is the face of Puma, Avon and Gatorade. Slamming Her Sister Serena and Venus have played each other in many Grand Slam Finals. They are the only two women to play in four consecutive Grand Slam Finals. They have played each other eight times in Grand Slam Finals. Serena has won six of them. Serena won five of the six first times that they played as professionals. Occasionally Serena played on a team with Venus and together they won nineteen doubles. They have played each other twenty three times as professionals. Serena has won thirteen of them. In 2002 things changed. Serena started beating Venus and that year she won all four of their matches.
