WYVERN SPORT TERM 1 - WEEK 10, 2015
IPSHA Cross Country Carnival
The Newington Preparatory Schools’ Cross Country team
descended upon the expansive Kings School to contest
the 2015 IPSHA Championships. The course was in
immaculate condition, although its reputation as a tough
and gruelling challenge still intact. Our boys were all keen
to meet the track as well as the hundreds of other
participants head on, by giving it their all.
The 8’s and 9’s division was first to begin over the
2000m course. Our participants were eager to get started
in their first IPSHA cross country appearance. Over,
around, down and back the colourful mass snaked its
way around to the encouraging cheers of the crowd.
William Fisher in 23rd and Harry Forsyth in 26th both
finished towards the front of the pack with amazing
runs. Gabriel Gordon was next to finish in 60th position
with Joel Zipeure with an exceptional 68th as an 8 year
old. Stirling Williams came home with a top 100 finish,
followed by Richard Hunt, Cameron Davey-Webb,
Christian Ishak, Charlie Glennon and Christopher
Boulougouris.
The 10’s division looked to be our strongest on paper and
it proved to be that way with some inspiring results. Henry
Isherwood showed his tenacity by finishing first of the
Newington brigade in 13th position overall. He was closely
followed by Matthew Torrible in 15th, who staged a sprint
finish to just beat home his fellow Newingtonian, Nicholas
Venetoulis in 16th. With these special runs, both Henry
and Matthew qualified for the CIS Cross Country Carnival
to be held in June. Sebastian Parhash showed he is
equally adept on land with a super 67th placing.
Sebastian was closely followed by William lane 81st,
Samson Tuqiri 83rd, and Marcus Pearson in 87th place.
Riley Leung-Nicholson and Blaise Harvey-Palmer fought
all the way to the finish to round off the division.
Expectation was high with our 11’s team enjoying some
success at this event in recent years. Bili Robertson
calmly went through his start a number of times like a
pro, before exploding at the gun to take up a forward
position. As the race neared conclusion, it was apparent
that Bili would be in the finish somewhere due to his
position and apparent ease of movement. Coming into
the final 800m, Bili exploded once more to put a gap
between himself and second place. In a lightening quick
move the race was over. Bili ran out the 3000m all the
way to be crowned IPSHA champion in an impressive
display of middle distance running. Bili will now progress
to CIS with plenty of confidence after his effort. Edward
Timpson was the next Newington boy home with a
tremendous effort to finish 27th and James McGregor put
in another dogged performance in 32nd. Thomas Oates
never stopped trying to finish in 85th, closely followed by
Dimitri Vallas in 88th. Hamish Taylor just missed the top
100 with his big effort, as did Curtis Mackinnon,
Benjamin Tahmindjis and Oliver Nicholas.
The 12 years boys was the final event scheduled. After a
long wait, with many still recovering from Wyvern’s Year 6
camp the boys were still on their toes and energetic at
the start. Gaelen Dorigo impressed with his determined
style to finish towards the front of the race in
35th position. Fletcher Jakes showed his ever tenacious
attitude to come home just behind in 67th. Joseph Dyster
and Will Rumi were just outside the top 100 finishers with
solid runs. Benjamin Walsh, Conor Corcoran, Samuel
Sullivan and Maxim Clarke endured the pain, never giving
in to finish their race and the day.
Congratulations to all of our boys for their pride, will and
attitude. The carnival was a big success with 3 of our
boys moving on to the next stage of competition.
Congratulations once again to Bili Robertson for his
scintillating victory, along with Henry Isherwood and
Matthew Torrible for their CIS qualification. We wish the
boys the best of luck at the event in June.
NSWCIS Swimming
Over the past few days, Wyvern has had 2 boys swimming
at the NSWPSSA swimming championships at Sydney
Olympic Park. Joel Zipeure and Christopher Mina have
both performed exceptionally well in reaching this level of
competition against the best young swimmers in the
State. Joel swam a great race in the 8 years 50m
freestyle but didn’t quite make the final. Christopher
swam in the 12 years 50m butterfly qualifying 1st fastest
for the final. Then in an unbelievably close race, Chris just
missed out on winning the final by a mere 9 hundredths
of a second to finish in 2nd place. Chris will now compete
at the All Schools meet in May, in a bid to qualify for the
Primary School National Championships to be held in
Adelaide during November. Congratulations to both Joel
and Chris!
IPSHA Football Trials
A big congratulations to Gaelen Dorigo and Joe-Reilly
Makovec for their inclusion in the 2015 IPSHA Football
team. Fletcher Jakes and Christopher Laoutaris also
trialled well but unfortunately missed selection. Gaelen
and Joe-Reilly are joined on the team by Lindfield student
Aidan Mostofi. All 3 Newington boys will play at the CIS
Boy’s Football Championships on the 24th of April.
Wyvern Summer Sport Captains 2015
Congratulations to the following boys in being named as a
summer sport captain for 2015. These boys have been
chosen to represent Wyvern by displaying sportsmanship,
leadership and a standard of accomplishment within their
sport.

F.A.S.T Football Program for Years 1 and 2
Registrations have closed for Y1 and Y2 Fast Football.
These sessions begin on Friday 8th May. Fast Football will
be offered to Kindergarten students in Term 3 this year,
with details to follow towards the end of Term 2.

Dylan Sleet competed in the grand final for
the Balmain under 10’s cricket final. Dylan’s
team, The Siberian Tigers, won the final. A
great achievement by the Siberian
Tigers! Well done Dylan.

Water-Polo Training - Pride Swim School
Pride Swim School, a long term user of the Newington
College Swimming Pool, has announced they will be
conducting water polo specific swim/fitness squads in
Term 2.
The squads will be aimed at boys and girls who play water
polo at school or metro level. The squads are focussing
on getting players fit to play their best possible water
polo.
The squad will be coached by National League level water
polo players.
Ages: From 10 - 16 years old
Mondays from 5.30pm - 6.30pm
(9 weeks - commencing 20 April 2015)
Wednesdays from 5.00pm - 6.00pm
(10 weeks - commencing 22 April 2015)
Thursdays from 5.30pm - 6.30pm
(10 weeks - commencing 23 April 2015)

Shining Stars
• Aidan Principe continues to make great progress
in the world of fencing. In the Marconi Cup Foil
competition, Aidan came home with both a
medal and a trophy for finishing first in the U/11
Boys Foil competition.

Bili Robertson recently retained his two state
athletics titles on the weekend at the Little
Athletics State Championships. In the:
800m – Bili has now won U9, U10, U11
1500m – Bili has now won U10, U11
It was a close finish in the 1500m whereas in the
800m he won by a significant distance. In the
process, Bili finished in front of the current
National 800m Champion! He also finished a
commendable 14th in the 200m.

Congratulations to Zac Papadimitriou on his
recent selection in the ARSENAL Youth Academy
squad.
