Miller to Retire in July
Senior Associate Athletics Director and
Senior Woman Administrator Dr. Beth
Miller has announced that she will retire
from the University on July 1.
“I’ve been fortunate to be part of the
University and the North Carolina athletic
department for 40 years and it’s been a
wonderful experience,” Miller said. “I’ve
enjoyed the challenge and opportunity to
work with so many outstanding coaches,
student-athletes and administrators throughout my career. I will
miss the daily interaction and the relationships I’ve developed
with those people the most. I want to thank the University of
North Carolina and the athletic directors for whom I’ve worked
– Bill Cobey, John Swofford, Dick Baddour and Bubba Cunningham – for allowing me to serve at such an outstanding institution.
It has been my honor.”
Miller has spent the majority of her career in college athletics,
serving in various roles including head volleyball coach, softball
coach, business manager, assistant and associate athletic director
and senior woman administrator. She is in her 31st year supervising North Carolina’s highly successful Olympic Sports program
and has been the department’s senior woman administrator since
1981, and the senior associate director of athletics since 1995.
In February 2015, Miller was recognized by CollegeAD.com
as one of the top 10 senior woman administrators in the country.
She currently serves as the primary administrator for 13 Tar Heel
programs: men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s
fencing, women’s golf, gymnastics, rowing, men’s soccer, men’s
and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field and volleyball.
She assists A.D. Bubba Cunningham as secondary administrator
for women’s basketball, as well as focusing on oversight of Carmichael Arena, special projects and campus and community relations.

Staff Members Invited to Be Part of
Department Effort to Battle Cancer
In the spring of 2014,
swimmers Abby Fisher
and Katie McKay decided
to organize a Carolina
Athletics team for UNC’s
annual Relay for Life,
an international annual
event that raises funds
and awareness to battle
cancer. Now, two weeks
ahead of the 2015 event,
they’ve got involvement
from all 28 varsity teams
and a fundraising goal that has already been surpassed and raised twice.
All athletic department staffers are invited to join with Tar Heels studentathletes in supporting the event. You can help by donating and also by joining in the walk, which begins at 6 p.m. on Friday, April 17, with a stirring
opening ceremony and continues into the day on Saturday. Saturday morning from 7-8 has been set aside as the staff time, so walkers at that time
would be particularly welcome.
Each team has a goal to raise at least $100 in donations, and it would be
great if staff could do the same! To donate, go to:

Off-Duty
Sure, we all devote lots of our waking hours to work, but members of our department spend the remaining time in a wide
array of ways. For example:
Elizabeth Lancaster
Game Operations
• Referees girls’ and women’s lacrosse games at the high school
and collegiate level
“After graduating from Carolina,
I was looking for a way to stay involved with the women’s lacrosse
community. At the time, I was working
and coaching youth soccer for CASL
(Capital Area Soccer League) and I
didn’t have time to coach another
team, but I was encouraged to try officiating.
“I just started my seventh season as a lacrosse official and
officiate games from the youth level to college games. I have
really enjoyed watching the game grow in North Carolina and
helping teach the players and coaches the rules of the game.
An added benefit to officiating is that I get paid to run!”
Know of a co-worker who would make a good “Off Duty” profile? Send
a note to [email protected].
Fond Farewell
Jessica Rippey, Athletic Event Management Intern, had her last day at
UNC on March 6th. Jessica left to begin a new job at the University of
Virginia on March 16th in the Athletic Game Operations Unit, where she
will be serving as the Assistant Director of Event Management. Many
thanks to Jessica for her service – we are so proud of her and excited for
this wonderful opportunity!

Scott Maxwell
• Learning Specialist,
Academic Support Program
for Student-Athletes
Born and raised: I was born in Chicago
but my parents moved back to Glasgow,
Scotland when I was 1 year old so I lived
there. In my late 20s I moved back to
the States and have lived in California,
Indiana, and now North Carolina.
Education: AA-San Diego City College
in Liberal Arts; BA-San Diego State in
English; MA-San Diego State University in Educational Counseling;
Ph.D.-Indiana University in Higher Education and Student Affairs
Family: Married for 23 years to Maria (she who must be obeyed). We
have one son, Ewan, who is a junior at Indiana University majoring in
bleeding my retirement dry
Athletic background: I was a good soccer player growing up and
turned down playing semi-professionally for money in England. I was
already playing in a competitive pub league and was paid in beer – I
couldn’t give that up! I also play racquet sports and am a member of the
UNC squash club.
Before UNC: I was a learning specialist at Indiana University Athletics
for 10 years as well as shorter term jobs within colleges. Prior to that I
did many things including managing hotels in San Diego and working in
a bookstore.
Currently: Associate Director/Learning Specialist since May 2014
Job description: I head the learning services operation within ASPSA
and work with a number of student-athletes across sports. I assist with
reading and writing, study skills and time management, and generally
work as an academic coach.
What’s something about your job that other people would be surprised to know? People with learning disabilities perform at the same
levels as those without. Having a learning disability is not in any way
remedial or special education, it is just a different way to experience the
world.
What’s the best thing about your job? Several things: I get to see
close-up how remarkable young men and women develop in their time
in college, I have amazing colleagues who dedicate their lives to student
success, and I receive delightful Nike bling!
Favorite pastimes: Books, music, sampling craft beers and single malt
whisky
Favorite restaurants: Spotted Dog in Carrboro
Favorite book: American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis
Last movie you saw and grade you’d give it: I never go to movies, I
honestly cannot recall seeing a movie in the last 5 years although I may
go and watch the documentary “Unverified” by legendary local film
maker Bradley Bethel.
A fun fact about you: I am hilarious. If you do not find me funny it is
an indictment on your intellect.
Biggest pet peeve: People who impose their worldview on others.
Dream job: Author
Greatest athletic achievement: As a spectator watching my son win a
high school swim race against his school’s biggest rivals.
What would you do with a completely free day? Check out a city
somewhere. The top three cities on my bucket list are Buenos Aires,
Mumbai, and Spokane.
If you could have dinner with anyone, who would it be and why?
Chang and Eng Bunker as it would be different.
What’s a little-known talent that you have? I am a Sudoko aficionadu
Britta Williams
• Rams Club
Director of Member Engagement
Born and raised: In Baltimore, Md.,
and yes, I love everything seafood and
football!
Education: Garrison Forest School and
UNC (’08). Majored in economics.
Family: I’m an only child. I’m engaged
to my fiancé Will Brown, who is the
Video Director for the Maryland football
team
Athletic background: Three sport varsity athlete (field hockey, basketball and lacrosse) in high school; women’s
lacrosse at UNC; after college, played in post-collegiate lacrosse league
in Baltimore until moving back to Chapel Hill; Hoping to run more races
– my first was the Tar Heel 10 Miler last year.
Before UNC: Spent 2 ½ years at The Baltimore Educational Scholarship Trust (a non-profit in Baltimore that recruits and supports academically talented African-American students from Baltimore through the
admissions process at one of its 19 member private schools). Started in
admissions and transitioned into development. Then almost three years
in the Terrapin Club with Maryland Athletics – focused on event planning & management, donor relations, and top-level donor stewardship.
Currently: Rams Club Director of Member Engagement since Oct.
2013
Job description: I simply live the dream. But overall I design and
manage creative stewardship campaigns, coordinate the game day Tar
Heel Experiences program, Student Ram and Young Alumni programming, coordinate student-athlete education and programming, assist with
Rams Club outreach and membership and assist with the execution of
The Rams Club membership calendar.
What’s the best thing about your job? Being back at my alma mater
to provide the same opportunities to current and future Carolina studentathletes that were afforded to me!
Favorite restaurant: Mike’s Crab House in Annapolis, Md. You
should visit if you’re ever in the area! Waterfront dining and some good
MD crabs.
Favorite TV show: Scandal
A fun fact about you: It’s not really fun but my legal name is
BRITTNEY. I get a lot of, “I didn’t know that!”
Biggest pet peeve: When people crack their necks or back! YIKES.
Greatest athletic achievement: In college, scoring the 24th goal in a
game to make it the highest scoring game in Carolina history
If you could have dinner with anyone, who would it be and why?
Serena Williams – While I’ve actually had dinner with her and her sister
and a group of my friends in college, I would love a 1-on-1. She continues to beat the odds and excels in a sport that many didn’t think possible.
She’s also an inspiration, especially to minority girls and women, to
achieve your dreams no matter what.
What would be your dream vacation? Take a private flight to a
beautiful remote island and enjoy the breath-taking views and some great
cuisine.
If you won the lottery, what’s the first thing you’d buy? Well, two
things and assuming it’s a good amount of money: I would build a stateof-the-art sports complex for underserved youth to play sports! And, I
would love to endow a scholarship at Carolina or name an athletic facility at Carolina in honor of my family.
