Round Square is a worldwide network of innovative schools in 40 countries across five continents.
Round Square schools are characterised by a shared belief in an approach to education based on six IDEALS,
drawn from the beliefs of educational philosopher, Kurt Hahn.
Internationalism - students learn to see themselves as global citizens and to look beyond gender,
class, race, nationality and culture to understand human nature.
Democracy - freedom of thought and speech is greatly encouraged and appropriate forums and
channels of communication are set in place.
Environmentalism - students learn about the fine balance needed to maintain a healthy
interdependent relationship between human beings and the planet.
Adventure - schools offer activities that foster a spirit of adventure and allow students to discover
that they are capable of more than they might have imagined.
Leadership - students learn that true leadership is about serving others and is found in those whose
convictions are rooted in personal responsibility, kindness and justice.
Service - students come face-to-face with the plight of those most in need around the world and
discover how they can make a positive and sustainable difference through service.
“There is more in you than you think!”

Round Square Week in the College
This week the College held a Round Square week to heighten awareness that we are a Round Square
School and to publicise some of the IDEALS.
Every day we had music at breaks and encouraged awareness of Round Square with quotes posted in the
daily notices.
On Monday, a bake sale was held to raise funds for a physical symbol of Round Square to present to the
school. We invited pupils who had been involved in international projects to wear a touch of clothing from
the country that they visited as a symbol of the Internationalism IDEAL.
On Tuesday in pastoral lesson, we had “boeresport” among the houses. This was to build relationships
across the different levels in the College.
On Wednesday for the Bridge House Earth Day, pupils were encouraged to pick up litter and switch off
lights for an hour.
On Thursday, as a symbolic gesture to identify with the suffering of children who go to school without
shoes every day of their lives, sometimes walking a great distance to get there, we supported the 1 Day
Without Shoes campaign and came to school without shoes. Everyone was asked to donate a pair of
shoes for needy children.
On Friday, we held a civvies day and dressed up in the theme of, “I came back from ………. adventure
looking like this.” Money from the civvies day will go to various charity organisations.
“I regard it as the foremost task of education to ensure the survival
of these qualities: an enterprising curiosity, an undefeatable spirit,
tenacity in pursuit, readiness for sensible self-denial, and above all,
compassion.” Kurt Hahn
“Expeditions can greatly contribute towards building strength of
character. Joseph Conrad in Lord Jim tells us that it is necessary
for a youth to experience events which “reveal the inner worth of
the man; the edge of his temper; the fibre of his stuff; the quality
of his resistance; the secret truth of his pretences, not only to
himself but others.” Kurt Hahn
Franschhoek Literary Festival at Bridge House
Last week, Bridge House played host to a number of authors from the Franschhoek Literary Festival.
In the past, authors, writers, editors, illustrators and journalists have visited the school during the odd
class or two during the week and then on Friday, the school has held a special assembly. This year,
we did things slightly differently. In a bid to involve more people and to include schools from beyond
the valley, Bridge House held its own mini festival on Thursday. We were joined by students and
teachers from a number of schools and we were able to have our students attend three different talks
on the same day. There were too many authors in attendance to mention here now and our students,
staff and visitors were treated to a real cultural feast. This is definitely not the last time we will have
such an event, so start getting ready for next year’s Franschhoek Literary Festival Day at Bridge
House! Thank you to the team of parents who helped on the day.
On behalf of the whole school community, special thanks go to Lindy Truswell whose tireless work
makes all of this possible. Over the past few years, she has brought dozens of amazing literary
personalities to speak to students all over the Franschhoek valley and the impact this has had on the
students is immense. Lindy is stepping down as the co-ordinator of the Book Week for Young
Readers and she leaves huge shoes to fill. Thank you, Lindy for all you’ve done — we are all better
for your having done so.

Matric Visual Art
On Saturday, most of the Matric Visual Arts class spent the day in the Art Room working on their
practical projects. We look forward to their final displays later this year.

60 Minutes with the Heads
Please note change of venue to Theatre
In the interests of good and improving communication between school and parents, Mike Russell and
Marc Barrow, Heads of the College and Prep respectively, will host the termly 60 Minutes with the
Heads meeting, on Monday 1 June in the Theatre from 08h00 to 09h00.
In order to help the Heads prepare properly for this, please e-mail any questions or concerns (of a
general nature) you may have, to [email protected] by or on Monday 25 May. The PA has
kindly offered to bundle these into a folder and forward them to the Heads, who will then prepare
responses to the matters raised, and e-mail out the agenda. Parents interested in these agenda items
will be welcome to come along and participate in the conversation.
Please note that any issues mailed to PA@bridgehouse after that closing date will not be on the
agenda for this meeting, and will either be replied to in the interim, or carried over to the next 60
Minutes in the third term.
The rules for 60 Minutes are simple:







it's a constructive and collaborative initiative;
matters raised and mailed through need to be of a general nature;
if deemed a better option to do so, the Heads can respond directly by e-mail to any issues
before the meeting;
there will be honest and frank responses and discussion around the topics on the agenda;
questions from the floor need to be only about the agenda issues: no "surprises" and no
"general" please!
giving the Heads some preparation time is simply so that if figures and data are required for an
answer, or if someone else's expertise is needed, there is an opportunity to gather this and
give full answers (and perhaps put it into a presentation of sorts);
time: strictly 60 minutes for the forum, so that it's short and sharp and those attending can plan
their morning.
Mr Mike Russell
New Parents’ Tea

an invitation please contact Jenny Jones on [email protected].

Bridge House Mountain Biking
Calling all Bridge House Mountain Biking families:
On Saturday 9 May, approximately 40 Mountain Bikers joined the first Bridge House Outride. We had
riders from the ages of 5 to 50 and all enjoyed a wonderful ride in the area and surrounding
mountains of Bridge House. We hope to make this a regular fixture.
The second Bridge House Mountain Biking outride will be held on Friday 29 May at 3:00 pm at
Bridge House. There will be a shorter ride on the trail running course of about 6 km for the younger
nippers and one/two outrides for parents and older children of between 10 km and 25 km. All rides
will include “sweep” riders.
The purpose is for us to meet as a Bridge House Cycling community by getting on our bikes and
enjoying the lovely settings at Bridge House and the surrounding mountains. The intention is to ride
for no more than 1 to 2 hours and thereafter to chat about our school’s cycling potential & possible
parental support to grow BH cycling across all age groups (College & Prep).
I would like to emphasise that this is a family outride, so the idea is for parents to ride with their
children. We do not provide adult supervision.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you require further details or clarification on 0724973576 or
[email protected].
