THANK YOU FOR APPLYING TO NASSAU COMMUNITY COLLEGE
Where Success Starts...And Continues
Every student who completes an application for admission, as outlined in this booklet, will be accepted
for admission to Nassau Community College. Some programs, however, have additional requirements for
admission which can include completion of key high school courses as well as established cut-off scores on
the SAT or ACT and/or on the college’s placement test. (For more information, visit
www.ncc.edu/admissions/apply and click on Admissions Application.)
Admission to Nassau Community College gives you the opportunity to reach the goals you have set for
yourself. Begin with your foundation courses and, based on your performance, move ahead in a selected
program of study. Choose your timetable – do you want a certificate program (usually one year of full-time
study), an associate degree (two or more years) and/or do you want to prepare for transfer to a baccalaureate
degree program? Not sure of what to study? Many of the classes you will initially take fit into most
programs, giving you some time to learn more about yourself, our array of academic and career programs,
and your future.

set up your MyNCC Account. This is your online
“one-stop” guide that tracks your progress here at the
college and keeps you up-to-date with what you need
to know and to do.

toward your NCC studies
• Run a “degree evaluation” to check your progress
toward your degree
• Check your financial aid status
• Review your class schedule
• Pay your NCC bill online

will be evaluated and, once you are admitted, you will
be able to view the transfer credits accepted by NCC
on MyNCC
i SAT/ACT Test Scores
Although submission of SAT/ACT scores is not a
requirement, it is strongly advised that you submit
them to the Office of Admissions PRIOR to taking the
placement test. Your test scores may exempt you from
one or more part(s) of the placement test.
FINANCIAL AID
i Complete the FAFSA
(Free Application for Federal Student Aid)
You must complete the FAFSA at www.fafsa.ed.gov
if you wish to apply for financial aid. Our school
code for the FAFSA is 002873. New York State
residents should also complete the TAP (Tuition
Assistance Program) application by following the
link provided after you submit the FAFSA. Our
school code for the TAP application is 2113.
Visit www.ncc.edu/financialaid for more information.
HEALTH INFORMATION
i Immunization Requirements
New York State law requires that students born on
or after January 1, 1957 and are enrolled in six (6) or
more credits must file proof of immunization against
measles, mumps and rubella (MMR). Regardless
of age, all students enrolled for six or more credits
must complete the state’s meningitis survey. Failure
to comply with these requirements within 30
days from the start of the semester will result in
a student’s disenrollment from classes without a
refund of tuition and fees.
Students can begin the process of registering for
courses, but an immunization hold will be added as
soon as a student is enrolled for more than six (6)
credits until the required immunization records are
submitted. If you are a returning (re-admitted), please
contact the Health Services Office at (516.572.7123
to verify that the requirements for immunization,
including the meningitis survey, have been met.
Students under 18 years old need to submit the Consent
Form for Students Under 18 Years of Age. This is
a notarized form that parents/guardians fill out which
gives the student consent to make medical decisions
for medical treatments and injuries. This form may be
accessed from the college website.
Visit www.ncc.edu/healthservices to learn more and
to access necessary forms.
ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE
i English as a Second Language (ESL)
If you were in ESL classes in high school or arrived in
the USA from a non-English-speaking country in the
last six years, contact the ESL Office at 516.573.0172.
Staff in this office can help decide the placement test
you need to take.

CSD is located in Building U and can be reached at

confidential.
PLACEMENT TESTING
i Taking the NCC Placement Test
Your success is our goal. That is why most applicants
are required to take the Accuplacer Computerized
Placement Test (CPT), also called the Placement Test.
The results of your placement test are used to assist
you in selecting the right courses
You will be notified via your NCC Student Email of
the testing you need, and will be directed to sign up
online for a test date. Make every effort to take the test
as soon as possible.
For more information, review the following
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTION and visit
www.ncc.edu/placementtesting.
REMINDER: You must bring a valid governmentissued photo ID (i.e. driver’s license or passport)
or current high school photo ID, a pen, and your
appointment confirmation to the test. You may bring a
calculator for the math test.
i Center for Students with Disabilities (CSD)
If you have a learning, physical, psychological,
hearing, visual and/or medical disability and need
special assistance or accommodations, we urge you
to contact the Center for Students with Disabilities.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT
THE PLACEMENT TEST
Q. What is the purpose of the placement test?
Q. Is an ESL placement test available?
A. NCC uses a Placement Test to provide information
about your skill levels in reading, English, and
mathematics. Your scores on the test determine the
reading, English and mathematics courses that are most
appropriate for you. It is used to place you in either
remedial (non-credit) courses or college-level
(credit) courses.
A. Yes. If you were in ESL classes in high school or
believe that you have an English language deficiency,
contact the ESL Office at 516.573.0172. An ESL
counselor will advise you of the test you need to take.
ESL placement test dates are different than the Accuplacer
placement test dates.
More FAQ’s i
Placement Testing Continued i
Q. What if I need special assistance or accommodations
to take my test?
A. We urge you to contact the Center for Students with
Disabilities at 516.572.7241 BEFORE the placement test.
Your documentation will be reviewed to determine which
accommodations are needed. If you choose to test without
accommodations, you cannot be retested.
Q. Who takes the placement test?
A. Degree-seeking students and those who plan to take an
English or mathematics class, or a course with English or
mathematics prerequisite, must take the test.
Q. How can I be waived from the placement test?
A. English Test

our ENG 101 (Composition I) with a grade of

Q. How do I schedule my placement tests?
A. Test sessions are available throughout most of the
year. When you have completed your application for
admissions requirements, you will be notified through your
Student Email account of how to register for the placement
test. Be sure to register for testing as soon as possible so
that you can soon register for classes!
Q. What if I have little or no computer experience?
How will I do on a computerized placement test?
A. NO PROBLEM! The test is very user-friendly and
there is always a proctor in the Testing Center ready to
answer your questions.
Q. How long does the test take?
A. That depends on you. You are permitted up to an hour
to complete the essay. The reading comprehension and
mathematics portions of the test are multiple choice and
they are not timed. You work at your own pace. You should
expect to spend about 2½ hours in the computer lab when
taking the reading, English and mathematics tests.
Q. Should I guess if I am unsure of an answer?
A. Yes! Questions are chosen for you on the basis of your
answers to previous questions.
Therefore, you must answer every question when it is first
given. You cannot omit a question or return to it later.
Q. Can I prepare for the test?
A. Yes. Come to the test well-rested. If you have not taken
mathematics in six months or more, take a free diagnostic
test at www.ncc.mymathtest.com to analyze your math
skills and identify your strengths and weaknesses. The
placement test is very important because it determines
your course placement..
