The fire sprinkler has not been evaluated by UL to the appropriate Standards for Safety and it is unknown if the fire sprinkler complies with any safety requirements.Although the fire sprinkler’s wrench boss is marked “TYCO” the fire sprinkler was not manufactured by Tyco, its affiliates or agents. Name of Product: Pendent Type Fire Sprinkler Identification: On the product: The counterfeit sprinkler has the UL Mark on the wrench boss. Southwest NFSA Chapter News Arizona fills all board positions The Arizona State NFSA Chapter is pleased to announce the appointment of David Fabook from the Tempe Fire Department has accepted the board's nomination to the position of Chapter SecretaryTreasurer for the newly formed Chapter. David is the first, if not one of the first appointed nonindustry (manufacturer, distributor, sub-contractor) board member of a local chapter of NFSA in the United States. Chapter President Fred Graves wrote, "David’s appointment and acceptance of this position is representative of our Chapter’s vision of this Association and the role we want to play in the fire protection and fire prevention industry throughout the state of Arizona. We firmly believe that the local Fire Departments and Fire Prevention Divisions are critical stake holders in the industry as plan reviewers, inspectors, and code enforcers of properly installed and maintained fire protection systems. Many times the first responders are the one’s at the greatest risk in the event of the failure of one of these systems. I believe David’s presence on our board is an indication our desire to be very inclusive of the Fire Protection/Prevention arm of our industry in the activities, influence, and future growth of our Arizona Chapter of NFSA." 4 David will be formally introduced to the remainder of the Chapter at the next Arizona State NFSA Chapter Meeting at the March 17th noon meeting at the Phoenix Fire Department Training Center in Phoenix, Arizona. The Los Angeles Area NFSA Chapter met in Downey, California on March 22th at the Rio Hondo Golf and Event Center for a great dinner meeting attended by area contractors and supply and manufacturers in addition to 709 I.P. Director Robert Rowe and Southwest Regional Manager Bruce Lecair. Robert Rowe gave an update on his activities that included training at U.A. Local 709 and participation on the California Fitter Certification Work Group. Regional Manager Bruce Lecair gave an update on future NFSA training in California, NFPA 25 progress, upcoming NFSA national events and expanded on the Fitter Certification Work Group Meetings. Seminar in Woodland, California is filling up! The signups for the Woodland classes are better than we could have imagined. The two day fire sprinkler plan review is about ¾ full and the Understanding, Applying and Enforcing NFPA 25 California edition class is full to capacity. April 21- 22 - Two day Fire Sprinkler System Plan Review This two-day seminar provides attendees with vital information on how to conduct the plan review process for water-based fire protection systems. Utilizing the requirements of NFPA 13 the participant will be guided through an actual review of sprinkler system plans and calculations. They will discuss the importance of employing a systematic review process and identify the documents required for a complete plan review. Finally they will review a submittal of hydraulic calculation presented with the plans and discuss the process of hydraulic calculations and identify the key pieces of information presented and the common errors that are made. April 23, 2015 - Understanding, Applying and Enforcing NFPA 25 (new California edition) Class FULL Seminar Description: This highly interactive full day seminar describes the requirements for properly maintaining a water based fire protection system in accordance with NFPA 25. The seminar clearly describes the responsibilities for compliance & record keeping. It describes the specific scope of the standard, and identifies the various ways in which information related to changes in the system are handled. It describes the various Tables used in the standard, their specific purposes, and when to use which Tables. It involves the attendees in a significant number of exercises to describe various problems encountered, identify the proper section(s) of the standard that deals with it, and discuss how to deal with issues not covered by the standard that may still be encountered. 5 ON-LINE LIVE NFSA TRAINING SEMINAR SCHEDULE To register: Click Here March 17, 2015: Alarms and Initiating Devices: Louis Guerrazzi NFPA 13, NFPA 20, and NFPA 101, Life Safety Code, all have requirements pertaining to monitoring signals within an automatic sprinkler system. Along with these requirements, the IBC also has its own set of requirements that may need to be addressed. When it comes to the specific purpose of a signal, NFPA 72 defines 10 different types of signals that each warrant specific responses. This seminar will give an overview of the requirements for monitoring along with the devices needed to achieve the necessary alarms. Those alarms required for an automatic sprinkler system based on the standards and code above will be discussed. The program will also distinguish which types of signals are required for the alarms. April 21, 2015: Installation of CPVC: Robert Upson Listed CPVC pipe and fittings are allowed to be used under the regulations of NFPA 13, NFPA 13R, and NFPA 13D. The CPVC installation requirements and limitations for these systems vary subtly from standard to standard and are highly dependent the product listing along with the manufacturer's installation instructions. This program will outline the basic installation requirements for utilizing CPVC in all three standards. May 19, 2015: Fire Sprinklers in the ICC: Jeffrey M. Hugo, CBO Nearly every jurisdiction in the U.S. has adopted ICC codes. The ICC publishes several wellrecognized codes, such as the International Building Code (IBC), International Fire Code (IFC), International Residential Code (IRC) and the International Existing Building Code (IEBC) that are adopted locally. These codes do reference the latest NFPA fire protection standards, but they can have specific fire sprinkler, fire pump and standpipe criteria that differ from the referenced NFPA standards. This seminar will address the ICC codes in the perspective of how they affect the fire sprinkler installation. June 16, 2015: Planning the System for Its Lifespan: Jason Webb and Roland Asp, CET A fire sprinkler system is installed for the life of the building. Inspection, testing and maintenance are necessary in order to make sure the system operates as intended for as long as it is in place. NFPA 25 details the inspection, testing and maintenance needs for a fire sprinkler system. This program will cover items and components that need to be considered during the layout and installation of a system to facilitate the requirements for maintaining that system properly throughout its installation. FPO’s Meet throughout the Southwest! California FPO's honored by ICC! NorCal Fire Prevention Association held their February meeting on the 27th at the NASA Ames Center at Moffett Field in Santa Clara. The meeting was the annual Past Presidents Meeting. In attendance were former Presidents dating back to 1962. In accordance with the importance of the event and in honor of the Presidents service, a portion of the meeting proceeds were designated to the Charles H. Gray Memorial Fund. The highlight of the meeting was the International Code Council (ICC) presentation of the ICC Chapter Merit Award to the Nor Cal Fire Prevention Officers. This honor was given by Lee Clifton, Director, PMG Resources, Government Relations and accepted by Nor Cal President Tim Annis (above right) in honor of the Organization's longstanding commitment and dedication to the adoption of codes and standards in California and throughout the United States. The California Fire Prevention Officers are a recognized ICC Chapter in addition to their role in the State as a Fire Prevention Division of the California Fire Chief's Association. The Arizona Fire Marshal's Association met on February 25th at the Chandler Fire, Health and Medical Training Center in Chandler, Arizona for a monthly meeting of committee reports and reports from the Association's board members. The attendees also discussed recently submitted legislation affecting tradeoffs such as access roads and fire sprinklers which will restrict the ability of fire prevention bureaus to use trade-offs when applicable.
